“It is imperative that you, Hillary Clinton, learn more about public schools v. charter schools. Most educators are not voting for you due to your insistence that charters are viable to take funding from true public education. Ravitch has the facts and speaks for most of America’s highly trained educators. I am a university professor of public policy.”
I have also sent this petition to all my lists with my personal note urging all to sign.
This Sam Harris talk is most pertinent….it is on why he dislikes Trump. and of course he makes comparisons to Hillary. Well worth listening to him…why can’t we find clone of Harris to run for office?
I, like a vast majority of veteran public school teachers, have seen and suffered through the decades-long upheavals wreaked by reactionary politicians who, despite having no actual background or practical experience in the field of education or in educational theories and practices, legislate massive, ill-considered, untested changes to public education at both the state and federal level. Even worse, a shocking number of conservatives and neoliberals in both major parties seem to have been suborned, captured, (and/or bought) by privateering privatizers in the corporate and private equity sectors who are attempting to disrupt and commandeer the traditional ideals and models of public education in a way that brings them huge personal and stockholder profits by treating public education (and the U. S. Department of Education) as a cash cow they can first milk dry and then bleed dry, heinously risking our future for the sake of their own selfish and short-sighted economic gains.
Terrific comment Bobby Lee….please expand and publish it online. If you have no publisher(s), please feel free to contact me and I will offer it for publication with one of my media sources. I have been in agreement with all your recent comments which are so well written and filled with info. You can google me and see who publishes my articles.
Diane, I’m afraid that even if you meet with Hillary, she will just pay you lip service …..
Alice Walton and the other privateers have already poured plenty of pieces of silver into Hillary’s pockets …..as the late Molly Ivins used to say, “You got to dance with them what brung you.”
I signed the petition “on behalf of the future of public education” but I would like to see more than a mere meeting with Hillary Clinton requested. Frankly, we should start advocating for Diane Ravitch to be appointed Education Secretary (if she is willing to serve) because the future of public education IS a social justice issue and we need strong, qualified, rational, level-headed leadership at the executive level. Sincerely, Susan L. Sloan, M.Ed. (UCLA, 1999).
Diane, I have signed the petition because I support you, but I have zero confidence that Hilary cares about our issues; on the contrary, based on her political persuasion, her voting history and the types of players she runs with, I have every reason to believe she is a natural ally of the corporatist reformers. She is not a potential ally of schools, students, unions and teachers, she is a potential enemy, and I feel that any meeting with you will produce empty promises at best.
Been there and signed. You never know. If we keep it up and don’t quit, the day may soon come when the political Hillary’s of the world find it in their interest to support public education.
I signed too. Every BAT should. The Democratic Party seems to have turned its back on public education as an institution devoted to the common good. Like the Republican Party, it has treated education as another money-making business opportunity. I am seriously considering not voting. I will not vote for someone who ignores Diane, the heart, soul and conscience of public education.
If you do get said meeting with her, I vote that you take FLERP! with you. I’m not sure if he actually is a lawyer (I think so), but he certainly has the legal mind to pin down her loose definitions and generalities. Hillary is famous for being able to tell people exactly what they want to hear all while leaving herself plenty of wiggle room for doing exactly the opposite of what people expect.
My comment: Hillary Clinton. You should be defending the nation’s local public schools, their teachers, and elected school boards, not the charter school industry (as you did at the NEA convention).
Please meet with Diane Ravitch, distinguished scholar, former assistant Secretary of Education, and owner of a blog attracting over 26 million page views. Why? Because she is a trusted advocate for America’s public schools, teachers, and elected school boards. She is the nation’s premier custodian of historical and up-to-date knowledge about people and events in education.
I am 82 and have worked in K-12 education and teacher education since 1957, including supervising student teachers in the Park Ridge, IL schools when you attended them. You need to know how and why the charter industry is stripping money from public schools. Charters are privately operated and they have the legal status of private entities. They are engaged in re-segregating our schools and communities. They are under investigation for fraud in at least fifteen states.
I implore you to meet with Dr. Ravitch to understand why your support for public education is needed and why that support must be well-informed.
“I’m a mom of two elementary-school kids. Diane has educated me and so many others on the ins and outs of education in the U.S. today. Secretary Clinton, for the sake of my children, please let her do the same for you.”
I signed and here is what I said in my comment
HEY THERE RANDI,
it’s me Susan Lee Schwartz, and I have been telling you and Bernie since forever… to speak to the one person who has the facts DIANE RAVITCH
After all she was Secretary of State for two administrations, and is one of POLITICO’S 50 most important AMERICANS!
Do the Job, girl… stop the legislatures from taking over the schools they caused to fail… by simply stopping the expert teacher from creating the lessons that enable kids to learn.
So simple!Pedagogy is a profession and if doctors could not practice using authentic medicine, but had to use cockamamie theories and methods created by billionaires to sell medicines… oops , bad example. The marketplace is where they want Americans to get EVERYTHING… but schools do not belong there!*
* The entire TEST-THE-KIDS to judge-the-teacher was a PLOY to create a MARKETPLACE CONCEPT OF EDUCATION — where MANAGEMENT rates the employee, using a rubric they create. There is not a shred of oversight or accountability for management/administration, and the evidence is the rout of our teachers.
Let Diane explain how to end the ‘reform’ nonsense, and RETURN to putting back in the practice, the professionals: educated, experienced PRACTITIONERS OF THE DISCIPLINE, who will set the objectives for their classroom practice in order to meet the needs of each child.
Do not be impervious to the evidence that DIANE RAVITCH CAN PROVIDE.
Diane can explain WUZ UP, and what YOU and the UNION can do to PROTECT the classroom practitioners from top-down management, so they can ENABLE LEARNING.
Diane can tell you what teachers face, so you can BRING BACK teachers who know how to teach, who know WHAT LEARNING LOOKS LIKE ( WLLL).
DIANE can explain how YOU/the unions can stand up for their civil rights in the educational workplace, and how YOU can untie their hands!
DIANE CAN TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN TO WHOMEVER LIVES IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
HECK, she could,( if she wanted to),explain exactly you how the unions are falling teachers… but THAT is another conversation, entirely… call me for that one or go to my author’s page at Oped News.

I am in a fog in this heat.
The introduction to that letter would have explained that I addressed Randi Weingarten (who endorsed the clueless Hillary) because I it is high time she represented teachers and told the real story of what has occurred, to WHOMEVER WAS GOING TO LIVE IN THE WHITE HOUSE
I wrote my comment to Randi Weingarten who supported Hilliary.
I asked that she
“Do the Job, and Persuade Hillary to Stop the legislatures from taking over the schools they caused to fail” by simply stopping the expert teacher from creating the lessons that enable kids to learn.”
I told Randi that she needs to let”Diane explain how to end the ‘reform’ nonsense, and RETURN to putting back in the practice, the professionals: educated, experienced PRACTITIONERS OF THE DISCIPLINE, who will set the objectives for their classroom practice in order to meet the needs of each child.”
Here is my contribution to American Public Education.

Dear Secretary of State and would-soon-be President Clinton in 2016:
It is time to work with the best, Dr. Ravitch who specializes in history of education and has worked as Secretary of Department of Education under Bush’s administrations.
It would definitely be an advantage (26 + millions viewers and supporters for Dr. Ravitch) in win-win opportunity for you who would be President of the United State of America because you care for Public Education.
Apparently, you didn’t hear Johnson on the CNN Libertarian Town Hall a couple of weeks ago. He’s for complete privatization of all public schools. No support from them.
Libertarians want to cut public programs whenever possible. They generally see government as a nuisance — they believe more in “the market.” I can’t imagine why the libertarian party would stump for the adequate funding of public schools.
I am a BAT, and I refuse to sign. She is not the nominee yet. Bernie Sanders is still running for president and has not conceded. It is up to the super delegates to decide and that is not a foregone conclusion despite what the media will have you believe. Hillary and Trump are both bad news for this country for their educational stances, as well as their stances on foreign and domestic policies, and I will not put my name to anything that endorses or gives legitimacy to either of their campaigns. #stillsanders #NeverHillary #bernieorbust #dumpTrump
Everybody is making up their own rules. I think Diane should set up a format for a debate. I am not sure if anyone other than Trump and Hillary should be invited, but set it up, name the moderators and see if either one shows up.
Drive home the reality—politicians and the media do not want a full discussion of education issues.
I signed and added this comment.

Maybe NPE and the BATs can raise $225,000 for a meeting with the lesser evil.

It involves lots and lots of super-profitable ed tech, but only for the lower and middle classes.
They spend a million dollars a year on lobbying lawmakers. Seems like a great investment.

Talk to educators about education…not the business people who profit off of education.
Talking to Hillary Clinton is a waste of time. Try to meet with the Libertarian candidates. They might actually pay attention.
