Arizona Governor Doug Ducey appointed Clint Bolick of the Goldwater Institute to the Arizona Supreme Court. Ducey bypassed many experienced jurists by choosing Bolick.
Bolick has litigated many cases to fight government regulation of all kinds. He strongly supports vouchers and charters. He defended vouchers in Wisconsin and Ohio.

This guy will be a disaster!

Thanks for reporting on some many local stories. This one brings to mind wolves guarding the chicken coop. It being replicated all over the country in one way or another in states controlled by Republicans and often with Democrats too. It makes we wonder: Which news do people pay attention to the least, local or national? Will the devolution of more education decision making to the states mean that– your reporting notwithstanding– corruption, malfeasance, and undermining of pubic education and democracy will grow apace, but under the radar.

Aaaargh! Bolick is a committed foe of public education. Gov Ducey should be ashamed. — Edd Doerr (arlinc.org)

Ed reform has exceeded Goldwater’s wildest dreams, so it doesn’t surprise me at all.
“Government schools!” For some reason, government-funded private schools are acceptable in this ideology. I have no idea why “government contractor schools” are vastly superior, but that’s the theory.

You’re right Lloyd the Koch brothers through ALEC owns Ducey. As an Arizonian I’m embarrassed. Even my Republican friends hate him. There were many things I didn’t like about Jan Brewer but at least she was in favor of education and blocked many of the crazy legislation that came out of our legislature. Ducey is a lot more ideological than Brewer. I have a feeling that things are going to get even worse here. I’m not looking forward to this legislative session that opens next week. sigh!

For Ohio readers, Bernie needs a minimum 15% of the primary vote, to send a delegate to the Democratic presidential nominating convention.
