John Pedicone, who retired in 2013 as superintendent of schools in Tucson, explains to readers that education can’t improve if legislators and taxpayers are not willing to pay decent salaries to teachers and invest in the resources that schools need.

No free lunch. Do things on the cheap, cheap results.
There is money for the military industrial complex etc but not for education and other great societal needs. 23% of our children in poverty. Eisenhower listed things that one piece of military equipment would buy.
Probably not a good day – veterans day – to post this but it is true nonetheless. This is not to disparage in any way what our military has done, only the politicians who send our military out in counterproductive ways and wreak havoc on our economy, the men and women sent out to face war which the politicians have “no skin in the game”. THEIR children, by and large are not at risk.

I was going to point out the inanity of the “no free lunch” argument by the word salad & cognitive dissonance crowd—
But you beat me to it!
Thank you for doing a better job than I could have done.
I only emphasize: in education, the “money doesn’t matter” spin by the heavyweights of the self-styled “education reform” movement and their enablers and enforcers is only to be applied to OTHER PEOPLE’S CHILDREN.
For THEIR OWN CHILDREN, the sky’s the limit. I exaggerate not.
Bill Gates. Lakeside School. He went there. His children go there.
Just to host those “athletic frivolities” that are lost in the rheephorm mandated “rigor” and “grit” imposed on public schools:
[start]
The Lions’ 63,500 square foot facility features the arena-style Ackerley Gymnasium, a multi-purpose fieldhouse, the full-service Harry Swetnam strength training and cardio spaces, the Ed Putnam Sports Medicine Facility, mat room, three classrooms, and administrative spaces for athletics staff and coaches
[end]
Oh, and that doesn’t count Stimson-Carlisle Field and Ayrault Shellhouse and Middle School Gym and Middle School Field and Porter Family Track and Parsons Field.

Apparently it takes a lot of “inputs” to produce the kind of “outputs” that billionaires like Bill want to ensure for HIS OWN CHILDREN so that they don’t miss out on genuine learning and teaching.
Go figure…

Oh, but these corporate public education demolition derby reformers are more than willing to take the taxpayers money and even go to court to get more of that money for their autocratic, opaque, often worse and fraudulent Charter schools if it gives them a profit to fatten-their fortunes and leads to more power for them as they do all they can to subvert and manipulate the democratic process.

What do our corporate automotive companies like GM, Ford, etc. do that many of our schools don’t? They offer very good salaries (with bonuses!) and as many resources as possible, and ask requested.
Of course selling products for profit drives this, but why can’t our schools be similar? We are talking about this country’s future leaders, scientists, teachers, etc. Why wouldn’t our country want to invest in its future?

Well, according to the GOP front runner “wages too high” and “people have to go out, they have to work really hard”.
C’mon all you lazy Americans! You need to step it up and work 60-70 hour work weeks for less money! The Republicans with billions want more from you and by their God given right, deserve the fruits of your labor. Why aren’t all you loser teachers turning out workers that keep their head down, never complain, and just take what the oligarchs hand out? What is WRONG with this country? I mean Democrats still control at least the Whitehouse and a few states. Work, work, work!

Wait a minute. Do your math. Those lazy Americans only have to sleep 56 hours a week if the CEOs let them have 8 hours of sleep a day. That leaves 168 to work each week to earn what used to be earned in 40 hours a week. They won’t have to raise or feed their own children so they don’t have to go home or even own a home. Eva will do that for them if they pay her an annual salary of a few million. She’ll build prison like dorms and lock the kids away when they aren’t prepping for tests or taking tests.
In fact, those lazy Americans won’t have to earn any money working 168 hours a week because all of their earnings will go directly to the corporate Charter boarding schools that people like Eva will run.

Lol, I wasn’t saying why can’t our schools be run like corporations. I was saying why can’t our schools pay good salaries and offer resources, just like corporations. Reading back on my post now, I should have put the question in the first paragraph. Whoops!
I agree with the superintendent. Pay + resources will play a major role in improving our schools. Obviously there are many other necessary means to improve the schools, but these two are significant.
