I am sharing a post written by Anthony Cody.
Anthony notes that teacher evaluations have changed in most states and districts because of Race to the Top. He and others are conducting a study to see how teacher evaluation is working or not working.
Please read his post and respond to the survey, if you are so inclined.

For most teachers I know, evaluation has become a source of stress, massive paperwork, rigid adherence to some ridiculous rubric and very little helpful feedback. I know that many people like the idea of peer review and mentoring but this has it’s problems as well. Unfortunately, there is such a witch hunt mentality that some new teachers are reticent to have their mentors observe their classes. Also, new teachers know that their mentors have often been at a school for a long time and are “in” the loop while they are not. They can be afraid to speak up if they don’t feel their mentor is helping them or if they have other problems. There is no way they want to rock the boat by speaking up, and they don’t trust anyone. This is the system we have created. In three cases I know of currently, mentors and mentees do not have common planning time to meet. Stupid. Many teacher I know just want to get throughout the evaluation and then do what they do. It’s a dog and pony show and we all know it.

So TRUE, Mamie. It’s fear and punishment at work when we know fear and punishment just make people shut down re: learning. When I think of the nastiness from the deformers and the $$$$$ made, my heart hurts for our public school teachers as well as the students and their parents/guardians.
This CC$$ and high-stakes testing garbage was planned and executed at the expense of our young who attend public schools and those who teach in our public schools.

Teachers are trained professionals who KNOW what kind of help they need and will ask for it if they feel supported. But usually, ridiculous and meaningless “professional development” is forced on them. It’s a waste of time. This is part of the problem.
