During John Kasich’s governorship, charter schools have been the beneficiaries of political favoritism. The charter operators who give large sums to Republican candidates are never held accountable for their performance. In most states, this practice is called “pay to play.”
This article describes the corruption of the charter sector in Ohio. Some of the lowest performing charter schools in the state give the biggest political contributions. Certain for-profit charter chains have abysmal performance yet they will never be closed. Money talks.
Kasich appointed David Hansen as executive director of Ohio’s Office of Quality School Choice and Funding. “Kasich tasked Hansen with overseeing the expansion of the state’s charter schools and virtual schools, which are online charter schools typically used by homeschoolers.” Hansen had been a board member of a failed for-profit charter school. When Hansen was found rigging charter school grades, he had to resign.
“In July, Hansen resigned after admitting he had rigged evaluations of the state’s charter school sponsors—the nonprofits that authorize and oversee the schools in exchange for a fee—by not including the failing grades of certain F-rated schools in his assessment. Specifically, he omitted failing virtual schools operated by for-profit management companies that are owned by major Republican donors in the state.”
So Hansen is gone, gone, gone, but his wife is Kasich’s campaign manager and his former chief of staff.
And what of Ohio’s charter industry?
“Schools with D or F grades receive an estimated 90 percent of the state’s charter school funding. Virtual schools, which have an even worse academic track record and insufficient quality controls have been permitted to flourish….
“In the four years that Kasich has been in office, funding for traditional public schools has declined by almost half a billion dollars, while charter schools have seen a funding increase of more than 25 percent. Much of that funding appears to have been misspent.”
Ohio has so many low-performing charters, so many scandals, and so much corruption that the state has become “a national joke.”
John Kasich is portraying himself in the campaign as a moderate. Ha! He is no moderate. He tried to eliminate collective bargaining but the voters turned back his effort. He is as far right as Scott Walker. Don’t be fooled.

Pay to Play? Sounds too nice. We used to call that graft …

Ohio, just one of the many corrupt states which house corrupt politicians.
We ALL know that. What to do, and how to fight it is the next question.

He has an immediate problem too, because they won’t release information related to the charter school scoring scandal. If they’re manipulating data to benefit charter schools, I think it’s fair to ask if they’re credible on evaluating the public schools they hope to replace with charter schools.
“The Beacon Journal reported Sunday that major newspapers in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton have been waiting more than a month for emails or letters that David Hansen may have sent to other Ohio Department of Education officials or charter school operators and sponsors.
Hansen, who is married to Gov. John Kasich’s presidential campaign manager, resigned as the state’s CEO of school choice after admitting that he had intentionally ignored low test scores at online and dropout recovery charter schools, some run by major Republican campaign donors.”

Meanwhile, Ohio politicians are getting all exercised about the renaming of Mt. McKinley to Denali. That’s almost as good as tghe effort, some years ago, to designate Cleveland as America’s “North Shore.”

I also think it’s interesting that the entire ed reform focus in my state is on Kasich’s support of charter schools and vouchers, when 93% of the kids in this state attend the public schools he had when he walked in the door. His record there is terrible, but for some reason existing public schools that do the vast majority of the heavy lifting with or without (mostly without) John Kasich’s support don’t matter. That’s not just biased and skewed, it’s insane.
Maybe some enterprising reporter could ask John Kasich what his record looks like on public schools. Then we can talk about the ridiculous war on public employee unions he waged (and lost- his law was overturned by popular referendum) and his consistent disregard for the “government” schools 93% of kids attend. Lets’ debate that.

Kasich is waging a war on public education and at the top of his list is to destroy the public school teachers. He could not win with his SB 5, which was repealed by 66% vs 33% of the vote via State Issue 2. Now, he goes about his dirty business with the Ohio Assembly making laws against public education. Teachers are his enemy, in part, because teachers are in a union and utilize collective bargaining for wages AND teaching conditions. Teaching conditions include number of students in a classroom, among other things that matter to students. Pushing charter schools and being able to employ one’s family and friends as custodians and teachers at reduced wages and ‘at-will’ employment. This gives principals the right to fire you without due process over not liking your shoes. He is getting away with destroying public education in Ohio over the LIE that public schools are falling short, and teachers (largely female) sit around in the teachers lounge and complain. The vast majority of public schools are doing the job. Urban districts with high levels of poverty are struggling but NONETHELESS outperform charter schools. Ohioans’ children are getting screwed as are taxpayers.

“THINGS JUST DIDN’T WORK OUT, THE KOCH BROS. HAVE DECIDED TO PUT WIS. GOV. SCOTT WALKER UP FOR SALE”
“Republican insiders called Kochs’ plan to sell Walker highly optimistic… After their plan to sell Walker was announced, the Kochs immediately pulled Walker off of the campaign trail for fear that he might say something that would further reduce his dwindling market value.”

John Kasich has done more harm to Ohio public education than any prior Ohio governor. It is great knowing that he has no chance to become President of the U.S. What goes around comes around, Governor Kasich. I still miss Governor Strickland, a former teacher himself. Governor Strickland has to be horrified with all the harm that Governor Kasich has inflicted onto the public schools in Ohio.
Jeb Bush and John Kasich, Your dictatorship ways did not get you where you want to be! You both have abused your power, and now it great to watch you both get nowhere in the Republican Presidential race. Yes, what goes around comes around!!! Every time!!! You just don’t treat people like you have treated people in Ohio and Florida.

I don’t get how turning tax payer dollars into campaign contributions even if it’s not quid pro quo is not corruption.

My grandchildren live in Ohio so this situation scares me. It is not clear to me if he’ll run again for governor when he doesn’t get the nomination to become King. I heard some positive commentary about Kasich after that first Fox debate that Trump turned into a fanny showing contest. But Kasich distinguished himself in that 74 interview with mean girl CB when he delighted her with his plan to rid the country of teachers lounges if he becomes King of America. And I did see a blurb that he posted about wearing red carnations to honor President McKinley since Denali is now officially back to being called Denali. It seems that his nose is out of joint about Alaska reclaiming the name of their mountain and his state’s president is therefore being disrespected. (Oddly, there doesn’t seem to be any major location named for this man in OHIO!) Obviously the most recent commentary is not the worst of his ill conceived deeds. But the blabbering about truly inconsequential issues that he has no real impact over shows that he’s detached and just not engaged with reality. I stayed in a Columbus Ohio hotel recently and there were busloads of folks lodging there who came into town for a rally sponsored by the Koch’s. Local coverage of the event mentioned that Kasich was not invited to participate. (I didn’t have opportunity to research why that might be the case.) Also, several thousand protested outside the convention center. I didn’t attend this and if had not seen the placards in hotel and busses packing parking lot would not have turned on the news to briefly check into it. The reports I saw did not delve into the reason for Kasich not participating, though a number of his contenders did speak. It is my hope that this is indication that he will not be supported even by Ohio citizens in his attempt to be King of America or whatever he chooses to name the presidency. Its difficult for me to determine whether the general Ohio population is negative toward him.( He, like my governor did get elected so a majority must have voted for him.) Unlike my Indiana governor there are not yard signs through the neighborhoods declaring that he should be dislodged so its not apparent to a visitor if he’s unpopular for his foibles with education/charters. I can’t help but wonder about his campaign manager and why he’s continued to make snarky remarks in public forums, if these comments are slip ups or if they are planned to keep him in line with some of the other weird remarks and actions of his contenders.

This is absolutely correct. Kasich has fooled people to think he is Mr Moderate. He is a bully. He presents himself as a nice Christian man. And, he may think he is, but it is a misrepresentation.
