Teachers will not receive results that could otherwise be used as a tool to measure the student’s academic growth in the core academic areas of reading, writing, math, and/or science.
Families will not receive results that will enable them to chart the student’s growth over time.
High school juniors without Smarter Balanced assessment results will not be eligible for the remedial testing waiver offered by state colleges.
Students who do not participate will receive supervision but not instruction during assessment time.
Students who do not receive a score for the high school state assessment in required subjects, or an approved alternative, will not be able to obtain a high school diploma.
We’re not taking the test. I’m phasing out of teaching now — I started in Title I schools, and am ending with charters, both physical and virtual — so I’ve reasonably little fear of reprisals against my teaching license. And keep in mind, my son attends a high-performing school (over 90% proficient), with only 5% or so FRPL. Save Seattle Schools (http://saveseattleschools.blogspot.com/), an excellent local blog, has offered response to each of these mendacious threats, and I believe them.
This enforced compliance is unconscionable for all parties involved.

Seriously my mouth has dropped to the floor, excuse while I attempt to pick it up. These reformers will stop at nothing to punish students and parents. Please remember this at the ballot box!

The district’s claim is non-sense. Teachers are completely capable of monitoring growth.
Also, the school district mandates two different tests called Amplify and MAP. MAP and Amplify are computerized tests and are given 3 times a year. These tests are approximately 2 hours long and are intended to measure student “growth” and link teacher performance to test scores.
Our children are given classroom tests, district mandated tests, and state level tests.

Wondering what exactly this means… “High school juniors without Smarter Balanced assessment results will not be eligible for the remedial testing waiver offered by state colleges…” Are straight “A” students now going to be forced to take remedial testing – whatever that means???

What it means is that if you pass the SBAC test, you wouldn’t have to take the test to get out of remedial math/reading that is required by some college/universities for some classes. But the SBAC is hours longer than any remedial test.

Although I don’t know the Washington State university rules, this strikes me as highly unlikely. In NY where I teach, for example, students whose Regents scores are below a cut-off must take the tests to determine their correct placement. Where I worked in MA, all students took a writing placement test. But in both states, each college determined their own placement/remedial policy. Is WA really that rigid that all state institutions–community colleges, colleges, and university–act in sync?

Artseagal, let me translate for you. We (the deformers) need to create chaos and panic so that we can profit off of it. To make this happen, we will create garbage to fail everyone using criterion having nothing to do with reality by using contorted questions and puzzling computer interfaces. We will then declare disaster (victory) and provide the contrived “cure” for the right price and profit margin. These unnatural and inappropriate questions are the key. Some of them have no correct answer. The brighter students will be even more baffled. What exactly is your complaint? It is a solid plan, the deformers have worked long and hard at it.

Brave students, teachers and administrators in Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School have decided to opt-out of an eight hour SBAC exam. It is important to note that 11th graders DO NOT need SBAC to graduate; they have already completed state graduation requirements. Washington State Superintendent Randy Dorn responds. Director Sue Peters has been very concerned SBAC and it’s impact on English Language Learners. An estimated 60% of students are expected to fail. Attempts to get this issue into the Curriculum and Instructional Committee have failed. In light of the Nathan Hale opt-out, and the fact that students will begin SBAC testing next week, Director Peters offered a motion to get a resolution to suspend SBAC onto the agenda. The majority of the board REFUSED to allow a discussion on this issue. Here is the story from the Seattle Times:

Would police enforcers be in all classrooms to make sure that students and teachers CANNOT TEACH NOR LEARN during maniac testing period?

Here is how Oregon Trail School District is responding to opt-out requests:
2015 – Requirements: Opting Out of Statewide Testing
The Oregon Department of Education recently released an “Exemptions from Testing: Frequently Asked Questions” memorandum. It is based on Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 581-022-1910.
The memorandum states, “In order for a school district to excuse a student from testing under Oregon law, the student’s parent or guardian must submit a written request to the school district listing the reasons for the exemption and proposing an alternative individualized learning activity for the student that meets the same goals that would be accomplished by participation in state testing. Appropriate school personnel must evaluate and approve the parent request.”
Based on the state’s requirement, the Oregon Trail School District requires that the following steps be completed before it can be determined whether or not a student is eligible to opt out of the state’s assessments.
1. Write a separate letter for each child to the Oregon Trail School District that includes:
a. name and grade level of child;
b. reason for the exemption request;
c. describe the substitute assessment that will be administered that demonstrates grade-level proficiency in reading, writing, listening, math 3rd-8th/11th grade; and science at grades 5th, 8th, and 11th;
d. and that you will provide the school the resulting data from testing so that school personnel may determine if your child is on track according to grade level standards.
2. Include a copy of the assessment for each child that will be reviewed by the district’s committee which includes a cover letter that:
a. describes the testing conditions – who will administer the assessment and when it will be conducted;
b. includes a statement that you understand that the assessment is at your expense.
Then, the district’s administrative review team will review the assessment and determine if it is acceptable. The review team will notify you of its decision. If the substitute assessment does not meet the above requirements, you will be notified and then you will need to find a different assessment for the committee to review. Once the process is complete, and approval is given, then the district will provide you with an official form that will allow your child to opt out.

The Seattle Education Association ‘s (SEA) monthly meeting on Monday at 5:00 p.m. has a New Business Item which is tepidly & timidly anti SBAC. 1.) the first “whereas…” uses the deformer lie phrasing. “…yet Washington is planning to use the results as a baseline in their state accountability systems”. Using this phrasing gives credence to the framing of these Big Lie neo-lib defined phake phony ‘accountability” systems. 2.) the subsequent “whereas” things refer to all kinds of interesting actions, there is NO mention of the losing effort (4-3) on Wed. 4 Mar. of some Seattle Public School Board members to slow down the SBAC train wreck. 3.) The NBI does NOT contain the words “opt out”. 4.) The NBI calls for letters to be sent out and for 2 meetings to be held so that people can take sample tests and … (we can sternly wag our fingers in consternation…& stomp our little feets?!) 5.) SEA members were sent the agenda for Monday on Fri. at after 2:00 in the afternoon.
I’ve been union ‘active’* for about 5+ of my 10 years teaching. When I consider the last 3 contracts of the SEA with more and more neo-lib “accountability”, when I consider the last minute general membership meetings where we don’t even have 24 hours to review the latest contracts, when I consider how those meetings are dominated by war stories of how hard everyone worked and how much time everyone spent and how bad the other side wanted it to be and how we didn’t lose as bad as we could have, when I consider how the political leadership of SEA-WEA (Washington) has been laser focused on not rocking the boat because the liars will lie about us and we’ll lose, I’m not surprised …
