After a four-day sit-in and a meetung with State-appointed Superintendent Cami Anderson, Newark Student Union members agreed to end their occupation of her office. They apparently won no concessions from her, but achieved widespread attention for their grievances.
So proud of them!
The students did achieve something. They demonstrated kids themselves care enough about their own plight to take direct, non-violent civil rights action. This will shape their entire lives and will manifest itself in many other social justice actions they will take later in life.
And the people who watched these kids learn by example.
Bravo.
AGREE!
She met with them– that was a Win for the students. Good for them and I think they will not stop now.
They won. She had to meet with them and, I assume, be civil to them. She can’t afford anymore bad press.
Will Broad Superintendents Academy now advise enrollees to meet with student protesters before blankets & pillows are sent in? Nights 1 & 2 the students went without but the community sent them for night 3.
These youngsters are terrific.
Congratulations to these wonderful students! They stuck to their plan to camp out in Anderson’s office until she finally met with them. Perhaps we’ll soon be hearing of similar action nation wide.
