   Diane,
   We just had a major victory for the children, parents and teachers here in Washington State. The Washington State Democratic Party just became the first Democratic Party Organization in the nation to pass a resolution opposing Common Core. This is huge because Washington state is not only the home of Bill Gates, it is also the home state for the high failure rate SBAC Common Core test. Thanks to the passage of this resolution, there will now be a bipartisan bill introduced in our state legislature. If it passes, it could be the end of both Common Core standards and the SBAC Common Core test.    I hope enough people sign up and turn out for these sessions. The initial review group seemed to state that it isn’t mandated tests per se, but testing over all. Worms, all of these commission “experts.” The locations are lack luster for voicing opinions. Educators and parents of school children, I hope, found out about this opportunity. Only seeing so few comments here is disheartening.

     Not so fast–there are actually some very sympathetic commission members on this committee.

     There are only two in-service teachers on this commission, one of whom is a colleague of mine. The news is that these commission hearings were a surprise to the commission members as well. The powers-that-be who set up these hearings were under the impression that nobody cared enough to even show up so they were just setting up hearings just to set up hearings with no regard for the time-factor. These were literally announced a week beforehand.

     This is why we need to get as many people to these hearings as possible. I think some folks are in for a shock as to how unpopular the PARCC really is.

   Testing has reached new heights of punishment in my high school. Our new (this month) principal has announced if the FCAT (ACT/SAT) is not passed, seniors will not go to Gradbash, Senior Breakfast or the Prom. A student can have a 3.7 GPA and 30 credits (one only needs 24) and a 240 on the FCAT (one needs a 245), and not attend the freakin’ Prom. I have that student! It is bad enough that a student doesnt get a diploma, but no Prom? What are administrators thinking?
