This is a heart-warming story about the public library in Ferguson. It stayed open when the schools closed. It was a haven for children. Teachers volunteered to teach. The staff kept the library as a safe place for learning, contemplation, and knowledge. With all the disorder in the town, the library stayed open. It has been overwhelmed with donations, receiving half its annual budget in just a few days.
The library has seen a wave of support online in the wake of its decision to stay open following Monday’s decision that state criminal charges would not be brought against police officer Darren Wilson for killing unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown on 9 August. “Many other orgs closing. But we will stay open to serve people of #Ferguson as long as safe for patrons & staff, up to 8p. Love each other,” its staff wrote on Twitter on Monday night. “Normal hours tomorrow. We will have teachers and volunteers here to help kids from 9-3 since FFSD [Ferguson-Florissant school district] is closed!”
Then on Tuesday: “WE ARE OPEN! Teachers and volunteers are here 9am-3pm to help kids who can’t go to school today. Library open 9-4, presuming it stays safe … Wifi, water, rest, knowledge. We are here for you. If neighbors have kids, let them know teachers are here today, too.”
The branch describes itself on its website as “your hometown library”, which “encourages lifelong learning and serves as a community information and technology gateway, dedicated to making the City of Ferguson a rewarding, attractive, and pleasant place in which to live, visit, and work”….
On Wednesday, staff at the library tweeted that they had been “overwhelmed” by “generosity from around the country”, with donations from more than 7,000 people. “Amazing and humbling,” they wrote.
Never doubt the value of the public library, whose uses are many, whose doors are open to all, a place to read, write, think, learn, and find respite.

Wonderful news.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

P.S. I tried to resist writing this but I couldn’t help but think of all the public school libraries that are understaffed or without staff due to “education reform” budget cuts.

It says a lot about the library staff and the teachers. They have gone above and beyond to create an atmosphere of love, peace, and normalcy. It shows what the working class has, and the 1%ers do not. Today, these heroes make me proud to be amongst the working class.

The story of the library is inspiring to the point of tears, but don’t be surprised that once the corporate reformers have replaced the public schools with Charters and destroyed the teachers’ unions in addition to closing public colleges and replacing them with corporate Charter colleges, they will turn on the public libraries, the military, the police and the fire departments (etc) as the neo-libs continue to wave the Milton Friedman battle flag of private sector profit based economics as god above all else to replace the republic and democracy that the Founding Fathers built in the late 18th century.
Then there will be a country ruled by a few billionaire oligarchs built on the Milton Friedman theory that private sector profits are worth more than the quality of life.
If we don’t stop them now, nothing will stop them. We can learn from history that Milton Friedman’s theory will not work and we can learn from the Bible too.
The Bible has a lot to say about money, wealth, greed — the bible has well over 2000 verses about money.
Here’s one of them: Ecclesiastes 5:10 “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.”

And of course don’t forget Colossians 3:16, Lloyd.

Colossians 3:16 forgot NCLB, RTTT and the Common Core Crap. I wonder if Arne Duncan and Bill Gates will revise the Bible to include those
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

Thanks for sharing this. It reminds us that there is still a bit of humanity left, even when we are surrounded by madness. There will always be folks around who are willing to do what’s right for the sake of right. And of course, Teachers always seem to be a part of that group of folks.
This gives me hope after all. Maybe there is chance that the greed and insanity will eventually give way to the idea of doing what’s right for our children’s sake. Maybe…

To all educational warriors:
If educators cannot educate, cultivate, and nurture the true meaning of humanity (= being considerate, honest, and caring for other human beings) to all of their students from all practical works, then there is not much can be done to against the evil force.
The evil force is the few, working class is the mass. Hopefully, the mass must learn how to unite and to find strategy in order to survive.
Thank to the kindness of many teachers and Librarians in Ferguson. I would like to repeat what teacher Lucianna Sanson wrote in the other thread, to be my conclusion, as follows:
We must protect our freedom.
We must protect our children.
We must protect them at all costs.
Our public schools are the last strongholds of our democracy.
(WHY?)
(BECAUSE) We must protect our children and our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness- a happiness that can not be found in Tennessee (or in your hometown)- unless we are free to learn, free to prosper, and free to work together WITHOUT the yoke of national or corporate education reform inflicted upon us. If we can’t work together to educate our children, how can we work together to make a great nation?

Good good.
I remember when I was about 11 in our home town of New Bern, NC and there was talk of moving the public library away from downtown. All public housing was close to downtown and my mother fought all summer with posters and talks to keep the library downtown so folks could use it more easily (walking to it). Her side won. And it is still there. Libraries are vital to good communities.

Thank you Diane for posting this. It gives me hope for the future. “There is not enough darkness in all the world to put out the light of even one small candle.” May the candles in Ferguson bring hope to everyone there.

Hooray for assertive librarians in Ferguson Missouri. You are a blessing and sanctuary for those still wanting to learn. Congrats to your strong-minded and brave folks who refused to give into fear to keep the library open. Wow – hats off to you. THAT’s the kind of tory that should bet front page news in the NY Times.
