A number if the candidates endosed by the Network for Public Education won their races.
The biggest victory was Tom Torlakson’s success against the corporate reform money machine. That victory must be credited to Tom’s character and to the many teachers and parents who believed in him.
“Tom Torlakson wasn’t the only NPE endorsed candidate and educator to come out on top yesterday. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo won a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. Sherry is a former middle school science teacher, and the proud mother of a graduate of the Detroit Public Schools.
“Anne Duff, also a former teacher, not only won a seat on the Fort Wayne, Indiana Community Schools Board of Trustees, she was the top vote getter in the race for two open seats, garnering more votes than the incumbent board president.
“Victoria Steele and Randall Friese’s race for the Arizona House remains too close to call. We will update you on that race when more information becomes available.
“Congratulations to all of the NPE endorsed candidates, those who won elections and those who did not. Passionate educators, advocates and politicians who support keeping our public schools public need to continue to run for office, at all levels. We must spread our positive message, and work together to change the national conversation about public education, from the inside out.”

I wasn’t endorsed, didn’t know about NPE, but am a former teacher, former chair of the Colorado House Ed Committee, anti corporate reformers, and champion for teachers. I won a seat in the Colo Senate. Sadly we lost the majority in Senate. Senator-elect Michael Merrifield

Congratulations to you, Michael, and best of luck! In Montana, MEA-MFT board member Jill Cohenour (a public employee and a strong supporter of public education) won a seat in the Montana Senate. MEA-MFT is the Montana Education Association–Montana Federation of Teachers merged union for teachers and public employees.

The Tom Torlakson victory represents a double win for NPE in that he supports the Ethnic Studies for LAUSD resolution, and NPE has endorsed that resolution as well http://rdsathene.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-network-for-public-education.html
Torlakson’s opponent, corporate banker Marshall Tuck, not only shut down Ethnic Studies programs, he shut down Heritage Language programs, and research proven Dual Language Immersion programs.

At the end of this article on Alternet there is this story about an 80 year old teacher who helped the Wake Co. public schools sweep an election in NC. With the help of Rev. Barber’s Moral Majority voter turn out, parents and teachers voted out the anti-public school majority of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. We can win this fight against the education bullies all over the country.

“On Tuesday, in a stunning sweep, four incumbent conservatives were turned out of office. They lost their majority and a more progressive group of Democrats now have control. How did it happen? As the News and Observer put it, “the opposition
woke up and found good candidates.” That seems a small victory, but not to the more than 155,000 students in the Wake County school system. For the rest of us
—and, frankly, for them, too — the future promises a great deal of bullying, pushing and shoving. Can we keep on, bruised and bloodied? We must.”
