The Network for Public Education is pleased to endorse Sherlett Hendy Newbill for LAUSD District 1.
Sherlett is a teacher, a coach and a parent. She grew up in the district as the daughter of immigrants who struggled to put food on the table. She went to elementary, middle and high school in the district.
After graduating from Susan Miller Dorsey High School, she received a scholarship to attend Xavier University in New Orleans. She returned 16 years ago to raise a family in the neighborhood she grew up in and teach in the school she attended.
She says, “I have worked with teachers, parents and community members for 16 years in this community to improve schools, stop budget cuts, stop school closures and reconstitutions.”
Sherlett Hendy Newbill adds, “Our public school system is under attack. I am the only candidate who is not a politician and not tied in with the corporate reform movement.”
She will fight to protect and build up public schools. She would like to create a “Family Center” network which would provide wraparound services for the community.
When asked about school closures, she answered, “When the school I teach at was threatened with being closed or reconstituted, I organized with teachers, parents, alumni and the community to stop this at my school and to put a moratorium on school closures in LA because closing schools is horrible for students and communities. Don’t shut down schools. Give them what they need.”
On testing, “Students are more than a test score. Testing should be one of many components used to evaluate students. As a teacher in the trenches of our schools, I know first hand that when teachers focus only on raising test scores, they narrow the curriculum, focus too much on test prep and the students suffer. We need a school board member that gets this.”
When NPE decided to endorse candidates we promised we would support candidates who support public education. We don’t have the money to compete with the billionaires. But we hope our support will persuade parents, students and teachers to get out and vote. This election will be a low turnout and your vote will really make a difference.
We urge everyone to get out and vote for Sherlett Hendy Newbill on June 3rd.

I am deeply concerned that the Network for Public Education put out an endorsement for LAUSD School Board District 1 without doing better fact-checking. The local teacher’s union, UTLA, has three endorsed candidates in this race: Sherlett Hendy Newbill, Hattie B. McFrazier, and Rachel C. Johnson, all UTLA members. As a member of UTLA, I am not speaking on behalf of my Union, but please know that I am personally supporting Hattie B. McFrazier in this race.
I must set the record straight and tell you that the following quoted statement that is a part of NPE’s press release http://www.networkforpubliceducation.org/2014/05/npe-endorses-sherlett-hendy-newbill-for-lausd-school-board-district-1/ is absolutely false. I encourage you to investigate the validity of my assertion on your own and publish a retraction.
As an educator and a mother, Hendy Newbill stands out among the field of candidates. She said, “Our public school system is under attack. I am the only candidate who is not a politician and not tied in with the corporate reform movement.”
Of course our public school system is under attack, but Sherlett is NOT the only candidate in the race “who is not a politician and not tied in with the corporate reform movement”. While I cannot speak about all of the candidates in this race, I can tell you that Hattie B. McFrazier is NOT a politician, and she is NOT tied in with the corporate reform movement in any way whatsoever. Hattie is a loyal unionist, a recently retired educator and counselor, and an active member of the Board District 1 community. She dedicated 31 years to the young people of LAUSD and stands ready to continue to advocate on their behalf as a Board Member. Hattie has been elected by her UTLA peers to represent them/us as the Chapter Chair for all of the Pupil Services and Attendance Counselors Districtwide; on the Board of Directors representing all Health and Human Services members; and on the House of Representatives. She has also served at the State and National level on the policy-making bodies of both the NEA and the CTA. Hattie B. McFrazier has won numerous awards for her activism and advocacy on behalf of the members whom she represents. In addition, Hattie has sat on many different committees within LAUSD, and she has done an expert job dealing with, and fighting back against, the power brokers that have infiltrated LAUSD.
And, unlike Sherlett, whose experience in LAUSD is limited to only a few schools, Hattie B. McFrazier has served in multiple capacities throughout Board District 1. Hattie has deep experience in District 1, she knows the students and the larger community, and she knows and understands the diversity of their needs. I have no doubt that Hattie B. McFrazier will fight hard to defend public education for the constituents of Board District 1 with great integrity.
