Keep talking Diane .They are listening…Good Luck…
Terrific, Diane. Love your book. Hubby will read it next. I am savoring your book—excellent indeed.
Hi Diane, Remind all of those women that the majority of us teachers are women. Hard working, compassionate women. Thank you so much for all you do.
As a white student in a school that is mostly black it is a wonder anything is learned it is full of disruptive, cut up to cool for school assholes. In today’s world I am sure this is considered racist, but I believe white kids learn better when they are in a white majority school
Scotti,
As a former teacher, I completely understand your frustration. HOWEVER, please don’t blame the disruptions on skin color. Place the responsibility and the accountability where it should be–on the adults in charge! Your administrators–principal, assistant principals, etc., as well as “county office” “leaders” are not providing the proper disciplinary actions and consequences for effective learning. You are not alone! Many, many teachers are just as frustrated as you and other students with the many disruptions that are allowed to go on in today’s classrooms (from usually just a few students) that prevent entire classrooms of students from learning and achieving their educational goals. A very large number of today’s administrators and school “leaders’ do not demonstrate the backbone needed to deal with unruly, disruptive students and parents that do not support their children regarding the importance of a good education. To put it simply, they’ve can’t seem to find the courage to do what’s right for ALL students and use the word, “NO!”–no, you’re not going to interrupt the learning in our school, classrooms, and “NO!”–no, you’re not going to come in to this building and pressure me into allowing your child/”angel” to avoid disciplinary action/consequences for their continuously disruptive behavior.
Until we have that backbone put into place again, unfortunately, you will continue to suffer in the classroom–regardless of skin color.
Good luck, and continue to STAY FOCUSED on your education! You will find your college education after high school to be much different!
Diane,
I so look forward to hearing you speak in Atlanta tomorrow morning. Thank you for your unending support of teachers and our public schools. I wanted to make sure that you saw my post to Robert Shepherd that was meant for you as well….THANK YOU!
Robert,
Thanks so much for your unending support of teachers and your always “right on target”, clear comments. After several years of working in corporate America, I went to the profession of my original passion and became a teacher to teach business electives. I, too, like many others, taught for your a, b, c reasons listed above. I was creative, and “worked very, very hard”, and the students really enjoyed my classes. I knew what students needed to know for success. Sadly, because of all the points of discussion regarding the teacher needs you’ve listed as well as the “gotcha” mentality that pervades education from top-down management techniques and the results of Common Core, I left the profession last spring. I miss it greatly! Until finding you, Diane, and others on Diane’s blog, I felt totally alone and actually thought that something was wrong with ME! Because of your work, along with Diane and others, I hope to see our public schools restored in the near future so that I can return to the career that I dearly love. Thanks again for your supportive, clear, common-sense comments!
