I just received conformation that Matt Damon will introduce me when I speak at California State University at Northridge on October 2.
Wow!
I just received conformation that Matt Damon will introduce me when I speak at California State University at Northridge on October 2.
Wow!
EXCELLENT!!! Matt does support great teachers.
Wow! Lucky Matt Damon will get to meet Diane Ravitch!
🙂 My thought exactly.
Here here!
YES!
I bet he asks you for an autograph, Diane!
agreed!
Exciting!!! Wish I could attend.. Keep it up, Diane ..We need you.
Diane- Matt Damon is a product of Cambridge MA public schools where his mother taught elementary school. His high school alma mater- Cambridge Rindge and Latin, uses Howard Zinn’s People’s History as its US History text. It is marvelous that his public education roots have grounded him so loyally in support. I hope you have a chance to discuss with him other ways that his celebrity might generate investigative media focus on the fight to save our public schools from corporate destruction.
Yes! Matt would make a great champion for the fight for public education. And…..he has friends! 😉
Yes, wish I could be there to see two superstars!
How wonderful! I wish that I could fly from Illinois to Chicago to hear you speak again. I am so thankful that I was able to hear you speak at Elmhurst College last week.
I received my copy of your book yesterday and have begun to devour it already. Thank you, Diane, for being an advocate for public schools, for America’s students who must deal with poverty every waking moment, and for teachers who know that the reforms they are being forced to implement are not in the best interests of their students. We will bring about change if we stand together against the business leaders who enforce poor educational practices in our public schools, while their own children attend elite private schools that provide a stimulating learning environment being deprived to students in the public schools!
Pretty sure Matt Damon’s children go to an elite private school. Bummer.
It is a free country. Anyone who wants to pay has the right to send their children to private or religious schools.
But wherever you send your children–or if you have no children at all–you should support public education because you are a citizen and it is our obligation as citizens to pay for a strong public school for all children.
It is in our common interest to do so.
We must be citizens, not just consumers.
So it doesn’t bother you at all that he isn’t choosing public schools for his children?
Old School, it doesn’t bother me that Matt Damon is paying for what he wants. He is not asking to take public dollars to send his child to a private school.
I’m going to chime in here. There are plenty
of great public schools here in L.A. where
the rich and famous send their kids alongside
those not so rich and famous. I won’t give you
the names. I wonder what neighborhood
Damon lives in, and what school corresponds
with his home’s attendance area. Usually,
the upscale neighborhoods have schools that
are on a par with any private school on things
that matter… they bend the rules and don’t slavishly
follow the district mandated curriculum.
I wonder if he acted too hastily in opting for
“an elite private school.”
“But in this case the reformers turn out to be all these people who have never been in a classroom except as students. And so many of them went to elite prep schools.”
But when Matt Damon does it…
Matt Damon supports public schools and teachers. Why should he be criticized for that? He doesn’t want to harm them.
Congrats to both of you. Tell Matt he can play himself when they make the movie about you!
Fantastic! Enjoy your tour.
Woo-hoo! This is GREAT.
Uh, oh, Diane, you may be becoming the first education geek rock star! And to think I used to hate you when you were a conservative (respected, yes, liked, no).
You’re better than Matt Damon. I saw you at Elmhurst College – thank you for coming – I’d go to see you over Matt Damon any day (but fun to meet him, I’m sure – enjoy!)
Matt, I hope you realize, every teacher you ever had is smiling and applauding you.
Thank you for standing up for public education and supporting all of Diane’s amazing daily efforts.
I hope some of these are taped-we need to be able to watch.

Ok, sign me up!!!
Wonderful! You know that you have our attention on this blog. I don’t post often, but I read everyday. Someone like Matt Damon can draw those who might not otherwise understand the urgency of our mission to save public schools. it amazes me that even many of my teaching colleagues don’t fully grasp the implications (privatization) of the “deform” movement.
Thanks for all that you do. I can’t wait to read your book.
Can’t wait!
So Diane, you are good w/ any parent–like Matt Damon–who chooses to opt out of their local public school, as long as they pay for private school? That doesn’t bother you?
It doesn’t bother me in the least. Everyone has an obligation to support public education. If they want to pay to send their own child to private or religious school, that is their right.
Diane, how do you feel about the private sector giving parents who don’t have enough money to choose private or religious schools enough money to be able to choose?
