ALEC has established its reputation as the organization funded by major corporations to promote deregulation, privatization, and whatever else benefits the big corporations.
In this speech, Jeb Bush spells out his agenda, which closely aligns with that of ALEC: Vouchers, charters, deregulation of teaching, virtual charter schools, for-profit charters, and Common Core.
The only particular where ALEC and Jeb diverge is Common Core.
Some ALEC members surely see Common Core as an initiative of the Obama administration and a federal takeover of education.
Others, like Jeb, see Common Core as an opportunity to make public schools look bad and to see hardware, software, and other stuff to schools and tap into that rich market.
Of course, Jeb didn’t mention that charter schools and voucher schools don’t post higher test scores than public schools, nor did he have time to acknowledge that virtual charter schools have lower test scores and lower graduation rates than public schools.
And he spoke before the New York state scores on Common Core were released, showing that the charter sector as a whole did far worse than the public sector.
But note the care he takes to couch the argument for privatization in terms of protecting minorities and advancing the needs of those at the bottom.
That must have appealed to ALEC members, who are not famous for their interest in civil rights but are busily trying to get rid of public education in their respective states.

The good old Bush clan are up to NO GOOD, just as they ALWAYS are! They’ve been raking in the millions every since “W” (the poster boy for WHY WE NEED PUBLIC SCHOOLS! His prep school education with his fellow elites qualified him for the prestigious position of college cheer leader, and later (after his many oil company busts) riddled education and lied us in to war. What’s not to love at the thought and ANOTHER BUSH IN THE WHITE HOUSE?
To hear him cover his greed with magnanimous virtues just shows the Bush propensity to lie AND steal at the same time! What a den of jackals!

Jeb! Bush has always sought to be the “one, true conservative” who can give life to the dystopian dreams of Milton Friedman and his “free market” approach to everything, despite the fact that there is not and never had been a truly “free” market that isn’t propped up by government subsidies and lack of oversight.
We will be a couple of generations putting public education back together here in Florida where Bush’s Frankenstein-ian experiments have decimated the schools. Look for the dollar signs when you want to figure out what Jeb! is up to — from his shell game with state lottery money for schools, where he subtracted an equal amount from the general fund every time he put lottery money “into” the school system and then bragged about “increasing” funding to schools, to his extremely foolish investments in Enron and several other corrupt Republican donor corporations that went bust when he was in charge of the state employees’ pension fund, Jeb! hasn’t an honest or intelligent move in his playbook.
He knows how to scam and lie and cheat and he’s gotten by with it for a long, long time. HIs tenure as an education reformer is beginning to crumble and it can’t ever be too soon for me. Watch for Patricia Levesque, his “mouthpiece of Sauron” to come out spinning like crazy with lies, obfuscations, and crooked data to defend him. It’s not working anymore and the feet of clay are starting to crumble.

At least Jeb and ALEC are up front and honest about what they’re going after and what they want.
Unlike Obama, and DFER, who pose as one thing and do the opposite.
Yet, they ALL smell rancid.

Love that 25% of the speech is his sales pitch for cybercharter chains. Where are the principled “liberal” school reformers on this? Terrified to buck their leader?
Oh, and how great it is that reformers support voter suppression, stand your ground laws and opposition to an increase in the minimum wage. What better way to improve the lives of poor children than disallowing their parents from voting, weapons deregulation and poverty-level wages?
It must be humiliating for the Mayor of Chicago and Arne Duncan that Jeb Bush is their biggest supporter. He gives his pals a shout-out in the speech. And why wouldn’t he be? The agendas and policy objectives are identical. Such a joke that there’s “liberal” school reform. There isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between Bush’s version and Duncan’s version. The only remaining question is did liberals get taken by conservatives or did they go along willingly?
Where’s TFA on ALEC? DFER? Do they support this agenda?

And this-
“Our greatness is dependent on our ability to unleash the power of individuals to create wealth and opportunity.”
Our greatness needn’t always be measured by wealth, and with that, power. Do we want to create a society of Yertle the Turtles – fighting for the top position? To have the top position, someone has to be subservient. The top doesn’t look down at the “little people” below them.

“Eighty-five percent of kids who enter the juvenile justice system are functionally illiterate.
Seventy percent of adult prisoners can’t read above a fourth grade level.”
He’s absolutely right. We need to arrest more upper-crust white collar thieves that are stealing from the rest of society through Wall Street and in board rooms.
We can absolutely bring that percentage down.

Any AP writers out there that are willing to take on Jeb! ??? He appears to be larger than life, but surely there is something that can pop his bubble.

I’ve seen this show, as we ALL have, many, many times before! A seeming “unknown” peanut farmer, Arkansas governor, etc. appears on the national scene, and suddenly, he’s the prez! Hmm, could it be that he was “picked” before the public “picked” him?
When I saw Jeb being featured by the press, quoted, slick little “ads” for him MONTHS ago, I thought, “here we go again…” I said then, and I would bet $ (if I had any) that he will “win” in ’16, and just like when his dear old, CIA head, dad and goofy bro won, the country will be worse for having had THREE dubious Bushes in the White House. I truly wish it wouldn’t be so, but then, does it REALLY matter whose in the WH? Hasn’t Obama’s strange change shown us that?

Jeb Bush WILL NOT be getting my vote if he runs for President and I will do my best to educate others about the insanity that he creates. As the saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. We need a good independent candidate to enter the picture. This country has had enough of the Bushes.
