Numbers don’t begin to tell the story. Nearly 4,000 employees of the Philadelphia public school district learned that their jobs had been terminated.
The Teacher Action Group of Philadelphia is gathering photos to put a human face on an inhumane decision. Each one has a story. They are real people, not numbers.
The district is not out of money or lack of such/student. It has $11, 322/student. This is planned destruction not destruction for need. I have the budget can send it to you. georgebuzzetti@gmail.com
So sad to see.
Good. Tell us who they are. It’s pretty sad to see billionaires backing job losses of normal middle class people.
Of course the edu-philanthropists will suggest these folks can apply for jobs in the charter schools…. just like those laid off in a corporate takeover can apply for jobs in the new company: at lower wages with fewer benefits… the race to the top in schools is leading to a race to the bottom in wages in benefits… but at least we’re running schools like the private sector!
My heart goes out to all of these hard working middle class (barely) teachers. We have got to say-enough already. Thank you Diane for being here.
Why do I have the feeling that the ranks of Philadelphia teachers are suddenly a whole lot whiter?
Dienne,
In a district in which the current and prior Superintendent are African American it is interesting that you would make these ignorant and racist remarks. As a parent & teacher in Philadelphia, I hope that one of these days you will see that people that act and think like your comment shows you feel, are the real problem with progress in our great city and our country. The problems that we have right now are not a “White Thing” or “Black Thing”. The problem is a GREEN THING.
Until people like yourself realize that focusing on the color of one’s skin is merely a distraction to keep us “normal / working class people” distracted while we are all modern slaves to the 1% that own this country, we will never truly be free.
Have a blessed day,
-CJ
