Governor Rick Snyder found it in his heart or his budget to let the children of Buena Vista go to school again. The schools were closed for a week after the district went bankrupt. The state has a constitutional duty to provide public education to its children.
Governor Snyder has given billions of dollars in corporate tax breaks.
Thank God someone came to their senses. Thank God for positive public pressure.
Amen!!!!
The right thing was done but it should have never happened. Many people were responsible or irresponsible for the decision to disrupt and close that school district
and it took public pressure to see the wrong headedness and draw clarity to the minds of the decision makers. The flagrant disregard for Federal Mandates that protect students and state regulations seems not to have been a concern for some. When did
lawmakers get to a place where they feel they can take another persons country, or a child’s school district, because they can.
The follow through should be sitting down and finding out why such a bad decision was made. Clearly there was a way to find the money to save the school year for the children and others, because the proof is in the pudding, the school is open. It is hard to say I applaud the act of doing what was right on top of the same people doing what was without question wrong.
We are living in an age that wants to build children with higher level thinking skills, fine, but along with that goes integrity, morality, responsibility, humanity. Those that want
it taught need to look closer at the kind of decision making the children are seeing coming out of the adults.
Snyder had nothing to do with it. He would have been just as happy if it had never reopened. He does what he wants and the consequences be damned. I learned that our state constitution has language in it that ties the state BoE and the superintendents hands in situations like this. Buena Vista submitted a deficit elimination plan that the state BoE decided to accept. As a result they got their funding back and the school reopened. The original decision was made in the dark of night, literally. There was a late night meeting after hours of the board where they took the money away and another late night meeting after hours returning the money after submitting their plan. Totally unnecessary. The teachers offered to teach for free.
