Our compatriots in Australia are watching the growing rebellion against high-stakes testing with interest and hope.
They are impressed by the courage and unity of teachers at Garfield High School. They are also encouraged by the Republican opposition to testing in Texas.
They are watching events here closely.
They know what happens here, for good or ill, will affect their schools.
The world is watching and hoping for better ideas to come from our shores.

The “*Republican* opposition to testing in Texas”?? I must’ve missed something…

How has the wait and see approach worked out so far?
Teachers are a compliant group. They went into education, because they played school well. They thought that it would be a good place to make a contribution to society. That at the end of their productive years, they could feel as though their life meant something. This is part of creating meaning again. I hope that this is beginning of the end for high stakes accountability.

In a way I am embarrassed that another country is taking this more seriously than teachers around this country–some who are not even aware of what’s going on. I would hope other cities and states around the country will find a way to show their support. And the best way would be to follow suit!!!
Mr. Moneybags Mayor just announced he will be cutting teaching positions. Well how about an organized effort of the part of the UFT to inform parents of their right to opt-out!!!
