Lyndsey Layton of the Washington Post has written a comprehensive review of Michelle Rhee’s moment on the national stage, presenting a balanced portrait.
Rhee is still pretending to be a liberal Democrat, even though–as Layton points out–she has allied herself with the nation’s most rightwing governors and advocates for the privatization of public education.
The only thing I read that I had not seen before is that StudentsFirst has raised only $7.6 million, despite the claim by Rhee that she would raise $1 billion.
Otherwise, there is nothing new. Nothing new about the cheating scandal. Somehow I think the public is going to tire of her routine. The only unanswered question is whether, when, and how the D.C. cheating scandal will finally be cracked open. What did she know, when did she know it, or was she totally in the dark?
Apparently, she is now promoting her book but the question I have as a writer is whether she wrote any of it since she has been traveling nonstop promoting the full ALEC package of charters, vouchers, anti-union, and anti-teacher legislation. The minimal requirement for writing a book is a sustained period of time in which you can write. She has not had that time in the past two years. Why didn’t she just say, “as told to,” as other celebrity authors do?

Need to get reformers out of the way. Keeping blacks and other inner city people under educated is our goal.

I know this is off the subject, but I wanted to mention something I just saw on the news. I live in New Orleans and it is Mardi Gras season, so all the krewes are out doing there thing before their parades ( a krewe is an organization that has specific floats ) they also do charity things and have parties. I didn’t hear what krewe this was but they just gave over 500,000 dollars to all the TFA kids that have come to New Orleans because they are such wonderful people who do this out of the goodness of their hearts. I just feel like this is such a slap in the face to all the teachers who are from here.

Very touching, since TFA has $300 million in assets.

@kbundsen It is a slap in the face to NewOrleans teachers. Did they give the cash to each individual TFA’er? How many of them are there? The volunteers of TFA that I know personally are dedicated and idealistic. They have no idea of what they are getting into.

Volunteers? They get paid and the district pays a finders fee, so they cost more. They are NOT volunteers.

It was the Krewe of Rex and they gave a large portion to the teachers themselves and then some to the charter schools. i think most of it went to the teachers because they called it a tribute to TFA. I found the article on NOLA.com.

I might be wrong, but I think the Krewe of Rex is THE Mardi Gras day krewe, and I believe that the Krewe of Rex is comprised of many prominent New Orleans businesspeople 1%ers. If I’m wrong, please feel free to correct me!

One more thing Louisiana has the most TFA in the country. New Orleans alone has about 500.

Has Rhee ever really claimed the liberal or democrat labels herself, or just allowed those labels as camouflage for her agenda? Like a wolf in a really, really bad sheep costume. She acts as if she advocates for students (while pushing and agenda that is dismissive of the burdens market-driven society has placed on their academic success) and she will offer back-handed compliments to the profession of teaching (acknowledging only that there are some great teachers, but avoiding the fact that the profession as a whole is restrained by non-educator bureaucrats and the attacking privateers).
But she isn’t really as “out there” (on the news, in front of the cameras, in truly public forums) consistently advocating and defending her agenda as someone fighting a good fight should be. She only seems to pop up in protected/orchestrated situations.
A pretty transparent PR/lobbying effort as opposed to a heartfelt cause, and the money its sources and how it’s spent don’t feel liberal or democrat.

I often find these “puffy” pieces are a sign of trouble for the subject person: If things were going really well, then the reporter would focus on the triumph of the program and the subject’s vision; but when you have to review their career, it signals a fear that the truth is starting to bubble up from the swamp.

I just love your word choice: puffy, swamp, truth and Rhee. Ha!

On the topic of raises/bonuses/salaries being based on test scores…………….In yesterday’s NY Times, a front page article outlined a new plan to base NYC public hospital physician pay raises upon patient outcome. Physicians were outraged, to say the least: “The corporation’s plan would make doctors’ raises dependent on their performance on quality measures. ……… Still, doctors are hesitant, saying they could be penalized for conditions they cannot control, including how clean the hospital floors are, the attentiveness of nurses and the availability of beds. And it is unclear whether performance incentives work in the medical world; studies of similar programs in other countries indicate that doctors learn to manipulate the system.”
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Does any of this sound familiar? _http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/12/nyregion/new-york-city-hospitals-to-tie-d octors-performance-pay-to-quality-measures.html?ref=todayspaper&_r=0_ (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/12/nyregion/new-york-city-hospitals-to-tie-doctors -performance-pay-to-quality-measures.html?ref=todayspaper&_r=0) Sue Sandeen retired educator, ESOL Gainesville, Fl

I wondered when we’d be hearing about this. Next thing we’ll be hearing about is the exodus of doctors from fields like oncology, cardiology and geriatrics.

Time for the 99% to GO GAULT!
But seriously, I’m still waiting for VAM to be applied to our bankers. Oh! Wait! They’re subsidized by the government for being too important to fail; so they delivered “value” to their shareholders, it’s just that the “value” is taking taxpayer bailouts and subsidies from a corrupted Congress and President!

No problem. Just bring in some Doctors for America (DFA) after their 5 weeks training and they will overcome all because they are young, hungry and better than you.

This is just asinine. What Doc would want to treat elderly, sick or at-risk patients? This incentivizing has to stop.

This could become a slippery slope. They may want to try this for many fields, or at least the ones that big corporations control They control hospitals (wouldn’t of happened with universal heakthcare). They are taking over education. Maybe the healthcare industry should start standing with and supporting the teachers.

Corporate control of medicine came a long time ago. And I doubt the average doctor’s arrogance and snobbery would allow them to side with the likes of teachers anyway.

Please don’t generalize that all doctors are arrogant and snobby.

Please ask neighbors, friends, politicians, corporate folks not to generalize all teachers as lazy, selfish, union thugs.

If she admitted to a ghost writer for her book she might have to admit that everything she has done is done as a ghost. She is not really running her Students Last organization it is those who have been behind her as their puppet while the puppet masters control the game in coordination with the rest of their games going on. Rhee is another of those right wing democrats who really, according to their policies, belong in the republican party. They are not for the people as “Real Democrats” are supposed to be.
