Happy Thanksgiving to all.
I love this. It came from a post on August 28. It was inspired by an article written in the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette by a copy editor. He wrote about his grandmother, who taught Neil Armstrong.
Neil Armstrong never forgot her. Even when he became world-famous, he remembered his favorite teacher.
Neil Armstrong had something to say about merit pay, albeit obliquely. When people hailed him for his achievement, he was quick to point out that there were many people whose work put him into space–scientists, engineers, technicians, hundreds of unknown, unsung heroes. He didn’t do it alone. It took teamwork.

We have a Thanksgiving tradition at my school started by the Future Educators of America where students are given little pieces of paper to write notes of appreciation to their favorite teachers. These little gifts are then put in teachers’ mailboxes on the morning before Thanksgiving. It’s like the teacher version of Christmas! I highly recommend starting this tradition at your school. It does wonders for teacher morale at a time when it is at an all time low. You can learn more about it by reading my blogpost “Giving Thanks” here http://kafkateach.wordpress.com/2012/11/17/giving-thanks.

I am going to the funeral of Miss Archambault, my fourth grade teacher tomorrow. She taught all four of the Schmidt kids back in the 70’s. She was a classy lady who inspired a love of reading, learning, and hard work! My youngest brother David shared her birthday. She gave Dave a book of lifesavers on their birthday. He speaks fondly of that personal connection and gift 30+ years later. She was thoughtful, kind, caring, and loved her students. They asked me to bring up the gifts at her funeral and I am honored.
My family and I have been blessed with great public school teachers. Both my parents were dedicated teachers and my brother Dave and I carry on the tradition. I am thankful for all the great teachers in the USA this Thanksgiving. Tracy Ajello
