Leonie Haimson has some excellent ideas about where to make budget cuts and how to raise revenues to protect children in the looming fiscal crisis.
Haimson is executive director of Class Size Matters in New York City and has long been the city’s leading parent activist. Her ability to analyze research and budgets is astounding. Her courage in fighting for students and parents is unmatched.
Leonie Haimson was among the first people to be placed on the honor roll as a champion of public education. She was one of the original founders of Parents Across America.
She is a tireless and effective advocate who makes a difference in improving the lives of children.

Dear Dr. Ravitch, Thanks for your very informative blog and the emails that I receive through it. While I am not a Progressive, and am a Constitutional Conservative, I agree with almost everything that you are saying about the Charter School movement and “school reform”, as it exists today in my city and state.I am from New Orleans, Louisiana. I have watched the violent crime rate in New Orleans rise – right along with the progressive takeover of our public schools by the RSD (Recovery School District). I have watched (and not silently!) as our neighborhood schools have been, one by one, turned into Charter Schools which are owned by out of state entities. I have seen our local certified teachers driven out and replaced by inexperienced, uncertified, very young Teach For America teachers from other states. I have watched (not silently) as New Orleans children have been driven out of these Charter Schools after they have been pinpointed as the ones who will not score high marks on standardized tests. Many of them have become victims or perpetrators of violent crime. Most New Orleans citizens are oblivious to the really scary link between the increased crime and the RSD’s, failed Charter Schools and takeover. My husband and I have known some of the children who, driven out of Charter Schools, died in the streets. Are you aware of AGENDA 21? The Core Curriculum may be a result of this scary U N plan as it is rapidly succeeding in our state and local communities. Thanks for all you do for our children and for America! Libba McEnery, New Orleans
