A year ago, John Merrow had a medical emergency. In the hospital, his blood pressure fell so low that it appeared his vital organs were failing. His medical team saved his life.
He learned some important lessons, which he shares here.
The first two are medical advice.
The third is this:

AFTER THEY GRADUATE, THESE 51 MILLION KIDS ARE GOING TO BECOME THE VETERINARIANS TAKING CARE OF OUR PETS, THE AIRLINE MECHANICS MAINTAINING THE PLANES WE FLY ON, THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS DECIDING WHETHER THE RUNWAY IS CLEAR, THE CPA’S PREPARING OUR TAX RETURNS, THE POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS IN OUR COMMUNITIES, AND THE TEACHERS OF OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN.
BECAUSE I WAS A REPORTER FOR A LONG TIME, ALLOW ME A FOLLOW UP QUESTION: ARE OUR ‘MAJORITY MINORITY’ PUBLIC SCHOOLS DOING A GOOD JOB OF EDUCATING THE KIDS WHO WILL ONE DAY PLAY IMPORTANT PARTS IN OUR LIVES?
SHORT ANSWER, UNFORTUNATELY, IS NO. PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE MORE SEGREGATED THAN EVER, BY BOTH RACE AND INCOME. BECAUSE OF ‘NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND’ AND THE BUSH AND OBAMA ADMINISTRATIONS’ OBSESSION WITH TEST SCORES, MOST POOR KIDS NOW SPEND AT LEAST ONE MONTH PRACTICING TAKING TESTS– DESPITE CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT TEST PREP PRODUCES LOWER TEST SCORES.
LOW INCOME CHILDREN ALSO ATTEND SCHOOLS WITH FEWER EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND HAVE LESS EXPOSURE TO SCIENCE, ART AND MUSIC. SOME HIGH POVERTY SCHOOLS ACTUALLY ELIMINATED RECESS…TO ALLOW MORE TIME TO PRACTICE TEST-TAKING.
DURING THESE YEARS, FAR TOO MANY EDUCATORS CHANGED TEST SCORES AND FALSIFIED GRADUATION RECORDS–TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK GOOD. IN DOING SO, THEY DEPRIVED THEIR STUDENTS OF A DECENT EDUCATION.
BASICALLY, THIS APPROACH HAS FAILED. FOR TWENTY YEARS TEST SCORES HAVE BEEN LARGELY FLAT, AND THE GAPS BETWEEN RACIAL AND ECONOMIC GROUPS HAVE EITHER GOTTEN LARGER OR REMAINED THE SAME.
BREAKING TESTING’S STRANGLEHOLD ON PUBLIC EDUCATION MIGHT JUST BE SAVE OURSELVES, BECAUSE, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, 35 PERCENT OF THE JOB GROWTH SINCE 2007 HAS BEEN IN HEALTHCARE. THAT FIELD INCLUDES 13 OF THE 20 FASTEST GROWING PROFESSIONS.
THAT MEANS THAT A LOT OF THOSE PUBLIC SCHOOL KIDS ARE GOING TO BECOME OUR DOCTORS AND NURSES, OUR ANESTHESIOLOGISTS AND X-RAY TECHNICIANS, AND OUR MEDICAL ATTENDANTS.
I AM HEALTHY NOW AND WAKE UP SAYING ‘GOOD MORNING, GOD,’ INSTEAD OF ‘GOOD GOD, MORNING.’ I TRY TO TREAT EACH DAY AS A GIFT.
John’s right. Our public are not “failing” the children who may one day save our lives. But our politicians are failing our schools, failing to give them the resources they need, forcing stupid mandates on them, crippling their ability to educate their students well.

I’m glad that John Merrow came out of that experience without any lasting disabilities. It scares the hell out of me as an owner of a prostate. I hope my urologist is more competent than Merrow’s former butcherologist. I wonder if Merrow sued him? I did have a prostate biopsy taken years ago and it was damn painful. I dropped that urologist.

I’m glad the Merrow got to live to see some more days. . . . As one who has gone through a number of different surgeries and who deals with the medical profession on an ongoing basis, I know that something can go wrong at any time. Even a simple prescription can be the wrong thing-been there and done that (tramadol, supposedly non-addicting-ha ha joke was on me.)
But I still can’t stand his writing on education.

What does his being a reporter have to do with the price of tea in China? Anyone can and could ask that question. And as far as I’m concerned it’s the wrong question. I ask: “Are our public schools that serve lower socio-economic students and communities doing a good job of educating the kids. . . ?” In some cases, the answer is yes and in others no. Those students that are being poorly served are not necessarily just minority students.
It’s the same type of questions that he has been asking for a long time-all that have a subtle jab at public education, questions that mirror the edudeformers’ statements:

More than one is too many. Merrow makes it sound like there is an epidemic of test score changes. Pure edudeformer misstatement that is meant to say something that isn’t true and put the blame for the supposed problem on the public schools. Horse manure I say!

That’s exactly what I hear the edudeformers say and now it is their supposed responsibility to provide solutions for the problems of their making, just as Merrow has done with his many praisings of edudeformer doctrine and personnel over the years. Hey, John, those “gaps” mean absolutely nothing, nothing! As they are the result of a process that is onto-epistemologically bankrupt (proven and shown by Wilson, myself and others for many years) and the usage of any results can only be “vain and illusory”. But Merrow hasn’t/can’t see that, just like the edudeformers.

Years ago I said that the acceptance of testing as the evidence of whether a technique or policy had a good influence on education was a mistake that we would all regret. The problem with testing is that it defines itself in a vacuous circular logic. Once you have accepted testing, you are forced down a logical dark path that leads to nowhere.
State officials decided to cast their lot with the testing scam years ago. Merrow’s continued use of test scores to suggest that using test score has been a failure seems to be an ironic behavior. Surely he is smart enough to see that this is silly. The state governments still follow this path blindly, mouthing the empty platitudes about accountability and performance, using the retoric and illogic of education reform to damn children to a second class experience. They are joined by administration that feels comfortable with the retoric but does not understand it.

This test score illusion is a tough nut to crack. It’s data but the cause and effect relations certainly do not correlate to learning, teaching or school quality. I did read Wilson and a little Popham as well. They are pretty clear that BS Tests are truly BS.

The main thing though is that that data in and of itself is completely invalid and any usage of the results, as Noel himself puts it are “vain and illusory”, in other word complete bunk!

Our schools are more segregated than they were in the 1960s, and the whole love affair with “choice” is contributing to an increase in segregation. This is an unhealthy symptom of a society that is becoming more isolated even as we become more diverse. Isolationism breeds distrust and sometimes fear. Strong, diverse public education promotes more opportunity and understanding for all. Well funded diverse public schools can transform lives, and I have seen it happen. Instead, too many of our representatives embrace the elevation of self over everyone else. This is not what America should represent. It should represent opportunity for all, and quality public education with supports for poor students is our best hope. The focus of education must be on learning, not testing, ranking, sorting or data mining. We need to return decisions on education to educators, not corporations, billionaires or politicians on the payroll of the aforementioned groups.

While many of the elected representatives at the local, state and national levels are guilty for what is happening to our community based, democratic, transparent, non-profit (real not profit not fake non profit), unionized, traditional public schools, let’s not lose sight of who is the real monsters behind what is happening, and most if not all of them are not elected officials.
I think it is clear that the people’s # ONE enemy is David and Charles Koch and the Wal-Mart Walton family.
Public enemy # TWO is a long list. For instance, all the members of ALEC, a secretive organization that the Kochs launched 45 years ago with an agenda to subvert the U.S. Constitution and the Republic it was written to create and protect from corrupt, racist, religious fundamentalist autocrats like them who without exception were almost all born into wealthy, powerful families.
Public enemy # THREE: Bill Gates, Zuckerberg, Eli Broad, and all the other billionaires that do not belong to ALEC, but that hasn’t stopped them from meddling in our public schools and helping the Koch brothers and ALEC achieve their diabolical agenda to bring hate and suffering to the people of the United States – especially if you are not a racist caucasian (to be clear, all Caucasians are not racists and all racists are not exclusively Caucasians).

Not mentioned, The role of Billionaires in funding initiatives that damage public education and perpetuate segregation while claiming to save children from failing schools. Not mentioned the cooperation of school officials in the ventures of billionaires who are clueless about education but oh so, so entrepreneurial and willing to use students as guinea pigs.

How is it that history and geography and civics being cut to ribbons is NEVER addressed when anyone talks about what’s being lost to the mindless obsession to testing, and only math and reading?
We (rightly) bemoan the loss of the arts, science, physical education, health, and recess. BUT, has NO ONE noticed the destruction of the classes needed to teach students one of the most important parts of a student’s education: how to be an informed, engaged citizen?
As a history and geography teacher, I certainly have noticed. But it NEVER seems to be mentioned by anyone else. And the lack of knowledge from students about anything historical or geographical is horrifying.

I have seriously had questions that ridiculous from students. They have NO CLUE about the most basic things we used to learn in 2nd or 3rd grade. Like “what’s a continent?” “What are the continents?” “What is the difference between a country and a continent?” All real questions, asked multiple times over the years. And I haven’t even gotten to the truly horrible questions like, ‘Who won the American Revolution?”
