John Deasy liked to dine in the best restaurants.
True, he didn’t bill for dinners at Per Se in Manhattan, where the average meal may cost $600 or more. (However, the list is just a small sampling of three years of expenses.)
Fortunately, Eli Broad and Casey Wasserman picked up many of these bills as a public service. Or maybe it was the taxpayers of Los Angeles.
It may be just a small sampling, but take a look at these swell meals.
A bribe is a bribe is a public service?
LOL
The BoE okayed it all. Let’s hope they do not hire a clone of Deasy.
But Broad has not backed off. He still is determined to rule LAUSD….so he put Deasy, with sleazy Ben Austin, in charge of his goal of charterizing 50% of LAUSD public schools.
Amazing how someone who might be headed for prison if the FBI and the SEC find him culpable of various felonies while negotiating contracts for the district could be Broad’s choice to lead this assault..
If LAUSD ever gets out of the mind set of accepting money from anyone, anywhere, that would help. People paid by Broad and other deformers should never be hired or put in management positions in the district. Too much conflict of interest and kickbacks allowed in this district. It really needs a clearing out of nepotism, political appointments in merit positions and independent oversight of contracts and facilities departments. The LAUSD IG as it is currently structured is a joke and this department really needs independence. So much to do but it needs to start with a new superintendent. If deformers pick him/her, you’ll get the same result. A stooge for private interest to fleece our public schools. And the BOE, needs to be gone like Dz. We trusted you to have our backs, our bottom line, and you were bought also. We can’t trust you, period
Exactly…I agree with you completely Paula.
Glad to see they are “running the schools like a business”. Now they can just add Thursday golf outings, private jets and drivers, and free massages. I think our last PD, we all dug through a bin of sandwiches from Subway and a tub of pop floating in melted ice. But then, I’m one of the evil, pampered, spoiled teachers.
Don’t forget the 3 martini lunch
Newark’s State Superintendent Cami areAnderson & now Chris Cerf already assigned the driver. Although parking near Newark schools is so tough, a person could lose hours of workday. Maybe NPS could use cones to save parking space.
This is not your father’s gravy train.
Well said.
This is really gauling when hundreds of teachers and education staff were laid off, this deformer, with the compliance of LAUSD BOE travels the world on an open account while the district struggles. I guess he figured it was his civil right to spend as much public money on himself and his buddies as he wanted. To be this arrogant with public monies and disregard the illegalities of his activities with the belief that by the time the public realized they were being fleeced, he would be long gone. But I challenge the district, the FBI and law enforcement in general to be just as diligent in prosecuting this criminal for betrayal and damage to the public trust as they were in praising him for how good he was for the district. Yes, LAUSD, you made the deal with this criminal now, do the right thing for la taxpayers. We want restitution, we want jail time now.
Those listed in this article were paid for by taxpayers!

Compare this to school cafeteria food.
No please don’t. 🙂
Let’s face it. He could afford to pay for these himself and taken the tax deduction.
Meanwhile teachers were buying stuff for the classrooms and school secretaries were hoarding supplies for the future, afraid of budget cuts. My school could have used tech support aide!
you would think that a person making $350,000 a year could pay for his own lunch without asking Eli Broad to split the bill.
“Going Dutch”?
“Going dutch’?
Or “Going ditch”?

Good to see a little expose on official corruption. Wonder who else has an account like this.
Ah, the world of the heavyweights of self-styled “education reform” and their enablers and enforcers and hangers-on and the rest of that “diverse” group benefitting from the largesse called $tudent $ucce$$.
Where have I come across a vivid description of the crowd that John Deasy runs with?
Hmmmm…
Does the name “F. Scott Fitzgerald” ring a bell?
[start]
“Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves. Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still think that they are better than we are. They are different. ”

Nowadays it goes by other names too. For example, the “entitlement mentality.” Think of it: while folks like Sandy Banks [opinion writer of the LATIMES] can’t stop loving her some John Deasy, I can’t help but think of all those hungry students for whom teachers I have known have bought lunches, while her hero was dropping benjamins on stuffing his gut and that of his privileged counterparts.

But understand that rheephormsters are outraged when folks like me are disgusted with their useless and wasteful self-pampering. They think it comes with the position of rheephormista. It’s an inevitable perk that can’t be avoided, so they think. And besides, they’re just so special…
Remember: it’s all “for the kids.”
😎
Let me offer a different opinion.
I never thought John Deasy was motivated by money, although his entire career is all about the perks of connection and knowing the right people.
It was being in those circles of individuals that Deasy thrived on. His acceptance by the rich and powerful that he was “their” guy. He was the dutiful knight to the castles of political and economic institutions of power who would slay their dragons.
John Deasy fancied himself a tough guy. In hiis narcissistic autobiography of his mind, Deasy believes that he was anointed to “save the children”. Thus he would “stand up” to the powerful interests…the teachers, the unions, the progressives who held the kids down. I keep coming back to his incessant use of Civil Rights language that he used as a cudgel against anyone who challenged him.
Yes he was incredible at bullying and humiliating a substitute teacher whose class he walks into on the second day of school…
but speak up to anyone above him in true positions of power and influence?
To Millionaires?
To the political power structure?
To Arne Duncan? To Obama?
To Eli Broad? To the Wassermans? To the Waltons? To Gates?
It was always, “Yes sir!”
It was “What do you need?”
It was “What’s my next job, boss?”
And hilariously, on occasion, it was “Can you scholarship me?”
Wel, Deasy’s ENTIRE life was one of asking these people to scholarship him.
He got scholarshipped by convicted education felon Robert Felner when he was his only disciple and graduate student.
He was scholarshipped by all the above gazillionaires.
He was scholarshipped by Mayor villaraigosa.
He was scholarshipped by the LA TIMES editorial board.
He was scholarshipped continuously (and tragically) by LA’s very own Board of Ed.
No. John Deasy isn’t in the education game for the money. He’s in it because the people who love him are the people he thinks matters.
The tender caress of Bill Gates or an Arne Duncan confirms Deasy’s self worth as a person. That extraordinary personal connection and closeness and sense of duty to Eli Broad is something akin to patriotism of one’s country–it’s the psychology of a good solider who has sworn a sacred allegiance–and it’s a privilege and duty that money can’t buy.
Casey Wasserman and Eli Broad’s names may be on the checks but, their money is the result of a rigged system that enables them to amass a fortune, without paying the true costs of their business operations.
If the people of a nation work, implement a legislative/executive/judicial system and then, a king comes and takes it over, the money may be in the possession of the king, but it is
stolen property.
