Mercedes Schneider wrote a book about Common Core (“The Common Core Dilemma: Who Owns Our Schools?), and she knows its history as well as anyone. One thing she knows is that Jeb Bush was one of the biggest supporters of the Common Core. When the criticism started, he defended Common Core. When the criticism intensified, he said he would not cut and run from Common Core. He stood on principle in their defense. He saw the Common Core standards as the answer to closing achievement gaps and doing all sorts of important and good things.
But now that he is in a hotly contested primary campaign, he forgot what the Common Core standards are. He doesn’t remember supporting them. He just likes high standards. He wants to get as far away from the Common Core brand as possible. It has become “poisonous,” he said recently.
Bush whacked again. Jeb unfortunately does not hold truth in high regard as is shown in several of his latest statements
His comments confirm that he has no vision for this country. He a chameleon waiting to see which way the wind blows or where he can make his next dollar. He is exactly the type of person every voter that wants a better America should avoid.
Oh, so he’s like a wind sock then.
Colin Powell warned GW Bush about direct intervention in Iraq (You break it…You buy it!)
Sorry Jeb. Your intervention in public education broke schools in Florida and then nationally with your relentless Common Core advocacy. Now you own it. We wont forget.
It was Colin Powell’s speech to the UN that, probably more than anything else, guaranteed the invasion of Iraq. He gets no credit for trying to talk Bush out of war.
Yeah but GW’s god overruled C. Powell.
just curious: who will hold jeb accountable for his prior support for common core. or, does, he get a free pass, as does all main stream media that refuses to check the facts or skim the valid research before writing their false and misleading editorials. some one has to stand up at a press conference and ask jeb some hard questions. does any one have a clue who could/ would be brave enough to assume such a thankless, albeit moral task?
I know the answer to the question posed at the beginning “Who Owns Our Schools?”
About 9.5% of the students attend private schools.
About 5% of the students attend charter schools.
About 5% of the students are home schooled.
Therefore 80% of the students attend public schools, although the charter schools are also legally public schools.
Only the people who attend public schools own them? How odd.
That’s why they want to destroy them. They belong to local communities, operate with transparency, have democratic elections. Most of all they don’t make a profit!
Very odd logic indeed. It’s as if schools are run democratically by their communities, which we know isn’t the case.
And Raj said “students,” not even including teachers and parents. How many students who attend public schools actually have a major say in what happens in their school? 0% would be a good estimate.
Yes retired teacher, public schools are “supposed” to be democratic, but as of right now they are not. Businesspeople, philanthropists, politicians, state and national boards of education own our schools. Not us. A very small portion of people are making most the decisions for the “80%” of public schoolers, despite what the 80% wants.
A lot like our country. The top few percent of wealthy people have dictated most policy for decades, against the rest of our wishes.
But Raj is wrong that only the people who attend public schools own them. People whose children used to attend public schools own them. People whose children will go to public schools own them. People whose kids go to private schools or are homeschooled own them. People who don’t even have kids own them. So, no 80% of kids do not own public schools. The community does.
Dienne,
A clarification is in order. My statement is crystal clear. I just said what fraction of kids attend public schools. I never said anything about who owns public schools, private schools or charter schools.
Clearly, your answer shows your obtuseness about the question.
Thank you Dienne. No children in public schools but very much paying for them and supporting them against the tide.
Jen Bush knows exactly what he is doing.
He is “claiming” to be against Common Core and “le repertoire privatizacion” as the election draws nearer…hoping that the majority of Americans will take his word at face value.
The Bush family is one of opportunity, grandeur, and going where there is wealth to be made (or stolen),
He is a man who speaks with a forked tongue..lhe really has no vision for America…just a continuation of the current nightmare plaguing the middle class for the gains of the 1%.
Jen Bush…
An A+ for the oligarchs…
An F for the 99% of the American people…for you and for me.
Jeb Bush did not look presidential at the recent debate. And his record in Florida plus his support of CC is going to bite him in the behind. There are just too many parents and teachers who know the truth and will vote accordingly, for him to have any hope of becoming President.
