The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a debate between gubernatorial candidates in Néw York. For some reason, only Governor Cuomo and Republican challenger Rob Astorino have been invited. The Green Party and other qualified parties were not invited. This is not right.
It is good that Cuomo agreed to debate at all. He refused to debate his primary opponent Zephyr Teachout or even to mention her name or shake her hand when she stood directly in front of him and extended hers.
Yes, disgraceful that LVW falls so quietly in line behind Gov. 1%. Very impt to spread the word about Green Party candidate Howie Hawkin for Gov of NY. A chance to build on Teachout’s strong showing against Cuomo from the Dem primary.
Your argument is flawed you can’t support an honest candidate within an immoral and corrupt system; a system which makes it impossible for anyone whom is noble and honest from ever having a chance to win any in many cases even run.You are always going to be spoon fed either A) candidate Mr. 1 percenter or B) candidate 1 percenter disguised as something else. Either way the desired results are achieved and the status quo will remain intact. The only way to eliminate this is to not participate in the evil shenanigans at all. Do not vote, do not pay taxes and then and only then will you see government by the people for the people not government for the corporations whom just happen to be people. Wink wink!
“Win anything”* Damn this autocorrect
Yes, I have become more and more frustrated with “politics as usual” in New York State, as if there are no truly progressive options for the residents of our state. Even friends, some of whom are teachers, who support Cuomo for his “progressive” stance on marriage equality for the LGBTQQ community seem incapable of seeing that a vote for Cuomo is a vote against themselves, every other teacher, and every student in New York. I hear complaints about all of the testing and the ways in which students who opt out are punished by the local schools. Yet these same people who complain still plan to vote for Cuomo, the one responsible for seeing that New York teachers and students toe the line. I do not get it!
This is very ironic.
The LWV used to host the national Presidential debates but quit in protest when the two major parties effectively demanded that they make the debates exclusive.
Nancy Neuman, LWV President at the time said they had “no intention of becoming an accessory to the hoodwinking of the American public.”
Apparently the NY LWV has done a 180 flip and now actually IS into hoodwinking the American public — to say nothing of completely oblivious to the honorable history of their own organization.
That’s not just shameful but downright pathetic.
The League of Women Voters of NYS, with its partners from WABC/TV, Univision and The Daily News, has been negotiating with the gubernatorial candidates to organize a televised debate in NYC. Based on the state League’s policies, the debates would have to include at least Cuomo, Astorino and Hawkins for the state League to be a co-sponsor. While two other debates have been offered to the candidates by other sponsors, our offer still stands.
I apologize to the League of Women Voters of NYS. I was told that you did not invite Hawkins. I was misinformed. and I regret my error.
