Jason France, aka Crazy Crawfish, used to work for the
Louisiana Department of Education.,he worked in research and
statistics. He helped to assemble the data on New Orleans charter
schools before he left. He has concluded
that CREDO is not credible. First, he realized that
CREDONis a pro-charter organization. Then, he looked at the
methodology, and was disturbed to see that the NOLA charters were
compare to the Recovery School District, the state’s lowest
performing districts. And he was chagrined when he saw that some of
the “successful” charters had selective admissions.
Very good Crazy Crawfish. At the same time the Stanford Credo Study showed that nationally only about 17% of charter schools did marginally better than regular public schools. They point that I keep pressing is that in order to compare charter schools with regular public schools you have to take into account all of their special allowances such as cherry picking students and parents, not having to follow most state ed code and local regulations, not dealing with ESL and special education, especially the moderate to severly disabled and not dealing with behavioral problems as regular public schools must. I call this the “Correction Factor.” If you use the “Correction Factor” suddenly those charter schools are at the bottom of the barrel. This is like LAUSD bragging that they had a 3 point API increase. First, that is not anything to brag about and most important is they are not allowing for the 117,000 students or 17% of the district not coming to school everyday and therefore not in the testing. These are the low performers. What if that were factored in? What would their API score be now? A lot lower for sure. Now with them on the street they are getting into trouble and end up in the criminal justice system. I just heard that a prisoner in jail in N.Y. costs over $160,000/year. That is a lot more than school. When K-12 fails they go right into the criminal justice system at very high costs/person.
The press does not report this, except for Al Jazeera and Russia Today, because we do not have a free press anymore since Bill Clinton signed the 1996 Telecommunications Act. Then there were over 80 owners of media now 6 and all hooked closely with the government by one means or another. Therefore lousy reporting mostly. CORE-CA is going to soon begin a comprehensive website not just with education. It will also be on criminal justice, special education, health care and all issues concerning “Community.” It will also have a space for students to comment and show their accomplishments. with a wide open comment section. If someone starts telling fibs, shoot them down with the proof.
Crazy Crawfish you really know of what you speak and it is appreciated.
