Pre-order Reign of Error by September 15th. There is a limited number of special signed copies!
The Network for Public Education is pleased to offer our friends an opportunity to pre-order a copy of Diane Ravitch’s new book Reign of Error signed by the author for a contribution of $100 to NPE. For a $200 contribution, Diane will inscribe her latest release with a personal message.
Here is an excerpt from an early review:
“When it comes to education, notoriously plagued by fads, it’s always difficult to determine truth. Ravitch, however, earns the benefit of the doubt by the supporting facts, figures, and graphs she brings to her argument, a lifetime of scholarship, and experience in and out of government”
Reign of Error is shaping up to be the biggest education release of the year. It looks to change the dialogue about education reform in the same way that Diane’s 2010 publication, The Death and Life of the Great American School System brought new attention to the plight of our public schools.
Make a donation to NPE and we will ship your personalized copy of Reign of Error via USPS by September 18.

Okay, that was easy.
Except for writing my own thank you for my own years of encouragement and support for the work you’re doing.
I kept it short, because I suspect you’re going to be inscribing a lot of books.
Done! Can’t wait to get my signed copy. 🙂
White on rice.
Done.
$200 on the way!
I did not see where to request an inscription. I made the donation.
?
Joanna, I have not reviewed the website message. I believe it is set up so that you will get either a signed copy or a personalized inscription.
Well, I guess that’s what we came here for, but people should get an inscription. We have to figure this out.
Didn’t a box come up on the page with the final button?
I assumed when I paid my name and address are noted, so that’s how they know where to send the book and NPE has your name as well, I think.
Nothing came up that I saw.
The book is to be my copy. So I want it made to me.
I used my IPhone, if that matters (Chmtchr).
Maybe the phone message is missing a piece, where it decides whether you want a signed or personally inscribed copy. Did you go in for the whole $200?
Joanna –
There is a spot in PayPal to add a message when you make a $200 contribution. If you were not able to do so, someone from NPE will contact you. If you don’t receive a message in a few days, send an email to info@networkforpubliceducation.org.
Chmtchr: the whole pie, yessiree. 200 bones.
It gave me a choice there, but no box to write inscription. It’s fine. I trust Diane will write it to me. It will sit right with my signed copy of A TEAM IF RIVALS by Dorris Kearns Goodwin (after I read it).
I will buy other copies to give and lend. Like 8 or 10.
I’m excited too, Joanna. This makes supporting NPE like a celebration.

I just got my review copy from the publisher. Wow! An incredibly important book, probably the most important on education in may years. I will soon send around my rave review.

Tempted, but, wait, I teach in NC….where did I put that dern credit card?
$200 on the way. The copy I preordered from Amazon in July will be gifted to a colleague. I can’t possibly imagine what to have you say, Diane, so in the message box I just said write what you want. I will be out of the country for 7 months and will miss your book tour. This is the next best thing!
I’ve been lamenting the fact that Amazon has the cheapest price around for this book, because I’ve been boycotting Amazon due to Bezos’ involvement in corporate education “reform.” I locked in the pre-publication price for Reign of Error there, in my Save for Later list, but have struggled over the ethics of follow through –and the fact that it’s still costly to those of us who are the working poor. (Cheap to me is the $4.53 with free shipping that I paid at eBay not long ago for a hard cover copy of Shock Doctrine.)
I strongly support the NPE and really appreciate that Diane is donating to the cause –in so very many ways– but regret that I really have no disposable income now, as my workload is being lightened by my employers this fall, as a cost cutting measure. Hence, I have to rely on free opportunities, including Google Books and Amazon’s Look Inside, though key pages are typically omitted. Thus, I’m hoping my local public library stocks Diane’s new book soon, and I really look forward to seeing many of the people here quoting extensively from it on this blog.
Cosmic…maybe we can communicate off line, but I will send mine to you once I am done. I will include a prepaid envelope and you can send it back to me once you’ve had time to read.
Thanks so much, Linda! How kind of you to offer. I would not want to share your signed copy. That’s too precious and valuable. If you are planning on buying other copies though, that would work. cosmictinker@yahoo.com
Yes, I also pre-ordered another one, so I will send you that one.
I will contact you tomorrow. 🙂
Overstock.com will meet Amazon’s price on books, but you don’t get the free shipping for orders over $25. Here it is:
http://www.overstock.com/search?keywords=reign+of+error&SearchType=Header
Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne has many qualities that endear him more than Bezos (no, I’m serious). If you don’t believe me, just Google the phrase overstock sith lord.
Thanks Chemtchr, but I stopped shopping at Overstock when I learned that Byrne is on the board of Milton Friedman’s foundation and actively promotes school vouchers: http://www.overstock.com/Patrick-Byrne/7371/static.html
Thank you for the link. Friedman himself, ugh. Here we all are, just trying to buy a book, and when you look at an online retailer CEO, it’s like turning over a rock in a degraded urban runoff zone.
I ordered my gift copies of Reign of Error from Amazon, for the free shipping plus the publicity impact Cody describes, but during the ALEC struggle I searched out other online purchase options. They’re all Sith lords.
Cosmic Tinker, I have every reason to believe and expect that your local public library will have a copy of “Reign of Error,” available to you for free. That is, if your local public library has not been closed by budget cuts or handed over to private management.
Thanks, Diane. I live in a city where the mayor has made draconian cuts to our libraries. He says they duplicate the aims of schools and so they should share space with them. If our libraries are co-located in schools, I imagine that means a cut in hours, too, since schools here aren’t typically open very late… “Who ARE these guys?”
I’m going to use Reign of Error as a book study for a PLC at my school.
If you are ordering a retail price copy, there is one reason besides free shipping to use Amazon. Amazon reports the sales immediately. Sales are a barometer of importance for a book of this sort. For example, Michelle Rhee’s latest book is now ranked #100,950 out of all books, and #60 among education biographies. Diane’s last book is ranked #990 out of ALL books, but is #1 in both Social Policy and Administration, and #7 in Reform & Policy.
Reign of Error is now, two plus weeks prior to its release, ranked at #1661 overall, and #4 in Children’s Studies, #9 in Reform & Policy.
Sending Reign of Error to #1 on Amazon will make this book hard to ignore.
Good thinking. I think it’s going to #1 all over the place.
Look at the context: kids will go back to school and insane (literally unhinged) new test scores will attack them in their homes, holding them accountable to a twisted hoax. Parents will want to read up on how that came to be.
Plus, John Stewart will be home this week, to inform them.
Wonderful!
We’re all so excited about the book, we forgot to talk about the effort we’re supporting with this donation.
The Network for Public Education is an essential step forward in supporting democratic and community control of public schools. Democratic means elected by local people, but local people want information about policies being imposed on their schools by governing bodies, political cronies, and corporate interests located far away. We want to join in other communities’ efforts to defend their schools against the same attacks, which Reign of Error exposes.
Let’s look at this fund-raising offer in context: Here’s the NPE home page:
http://www.networkforpubliceducation.org/
Look at what we’re building, just in the nick of time. The “accountability” trap was built to close on our public schools in 2014, but that ain’t gonna happen.
I do not understand your 9/16 email message. Below is the text of my review. I thought you might wish to put it on your blog. – Edd Doerr
Dear Ms. Ravitch,
I am anxiously waiting for my copy of “Reign of Error”, which I ordered on September 1st. As of now, I have not received it. I donated the requested $100 dollars. Today I returned to your original e mail (from 9-1-13) however the link no longer exists.
Please send me your autographed copy. I am very disappointed.
Thank you, Karen Carinha 77 Spruce St. Bloomfield , N.J. 07003
