Readers of this blog are familiar with the writings of Carol Burris, principal of South Side High a school in Rockville Center, New York.
Her fellow principals across the state just named her Principal of the Year..
Carol is a dedicated, passionate educator who is a leader of the fight against the state’s educator evaluation system. She and her colleague Sean Feeney created a petition drive and signed up more than third of the other principals in the state to oppose this ill-considered approach. Thousands of parents and fellow citizens signed their petition.
It is not too late. You can sign too.
Congratulations, Carol!
Congrats! You rock!
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.” Mark Twain.
Thank you for having the courage to stand up when so many who thought and felt the same remained seated.
🙂
In the end, it’s with the students where she leaves her imprint. “She is kind, thoughtful, open, and friendly,” said one of her students, “I will miss her the most when I graduate.”
It doesn’t get any better than the words of one of your own students who has been nurtured, inspired and guided by your influence.
Thank you Dr. Burris for giving your time, your energy, your courage to advocate for children everywhere. Your respect for children, teachers, and parents makes you absolutely deserving of this recognition. I am grateful for your integrity and moral courage, and I congratulate you for this well-deserved honor. You are truly an American hero!
Bravo Carol! Thank you for your courageous and tireless leadership. You continue to be such an inspiration for thousands of educators across NY and throughout the country.
It is so nice to hear that someone who has clearly demonstrated her dedication to her staff and students has won this award.
We should always notice and praise those who do good work in education especially those who work in the system and take that risk. Principal of the year in a state like N.Y. is a big deal. Thank You for your work for our children.
Carol deserves the award and much more. I heard her speak at Bergtraum HS last year and I was impressed with her knowledge, passion, and forthright. She’s a true educator.
Congrats to her.
My former principal was a student of Ms. Burris when she was earning her administrative credentials. She raved about Burris.
I concur.
Ms. Burris should be nominated for a Nobel for peacekeeping, democracy building, and contributing to the fulfillment of civil rights for children and familes.
More power to her and her colleague Sean Feeney.
Long live courageous educators!
Kudos, Carol! How exciting and well-deserved!
Congratulations, Carol. Keep on fighting!
Congrats!
Thank you Carol and congratulations! You are doing so much for students and teachers.
Carol is a true school reformer. She is committed to evidence-based, long-term change to drive excellence and equity. Her reform work at her own school, and the lessons to be learned from it, are described in her two books (both co-authored with Delia Garrity): http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&field-author=Carol%20Corbett%20Burris&page=1&rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3ACarol%20Corbett%20Burris
Both books are well worth the read.
