Here is the latest from Mississippi, which is considering charter legislation.
Running through the comments of advocates for charters is the claim that charters will improve achievement for the lowest performing students.
They need to know three things:
1. There is no evidence that charter schools know how to improve student achievement.
2. If the governor and the legislature truly believe that deregulation improves achievement, why not deregulate all the schools?
3. When they create a charter system to compete with public schools, they risk creating a dual school system. Researchers consistently find that charters are more segregated than district schools. Is Mississippi okay with restoring another dual school system?
I was a big advocate for charters in WV a couple of years ago and agree with each of your points, especially number 2. That has been my focus since then and am particularly interested in your thoughts on why the teaching profession seems reluctant to embrace the idea of running the schools? I was very impressed with Kim Ferris-Berg’s book, Trusting Teachers With School Success, but as a strategy it seems like such an outlier when I think it should be the starting point. Any thoughts?
Can you please explain what they have to say in the book.
Thanks!

quick synopsis
What would teachers do if they had the autonomy not just to make classroom decisions, but to collectively—with their colleagues—make the decisions influencing whole school success? Decisions such as school curriculum, how to allocate the school budget, and whom to hire.
As a member of the Mississppi House of Representatives, I agree and am doing what I can to stop the charters from coming into our state. So much so that the Speaker of the House removed me from the House Education Committee where I had served since 2007. No sitting member had ever been removed without consenting to the move. The Speaker acknowledged that I was removed because of my votes against charter schools.
Why not have segregation as “The South Shall Rise Again.” Just as many believe that the world is only 5,000 years old and we rode dinosaurs. Why not? Now, there is a major war to take us backward all the way. Those on the top think they have the “Divine Right” to do this. It is as some of my political advisors taught me long ago “I am me and you are you and you do not count.” And never forget “I hear real good, but I see a whole lot better.” Only pay attention to what they do not what they say and all would be a lot better off just like when you want to tackle someone in football the game is to only look at their belt buckle as that is the one place which is going exactly where they are going.
