I often see stories online about ICE acting like thugs, brutalizing people; releasing tear gas at a traffic stop in a quiet neighborhood; storming an apartment building at 1 a.m., sending everyone into the street, zip-tying the children together; ICE smashing car windows and dragging out the occupants; ICE agents beating up women, throwing them to the floor; ICE detaining people who then disappear.
This is another example of ICE acting as Trump’s Gestapo. George Reyes is an American citizen and a veteran. He was arrested by ICE and held incommunicado for three days. His story appears on a blog called Home of the Brave.
He wrote:

Civil rights in America have always been about one thing: holding power accountable when it strips people of their dignity and freedom. They are not privileges that government agents get to decide whether to honor. What happened to me wasn’t just a mistake—it was a violation of the very protections that our Constitution guarantees.
On July 10, I was on my way to work when ICE agents engulfed my car in tear gas, smashed my driver-side window, and pepper-sprayed my face. They dragged me out, threw me to the ground, and even while I was complying, one agent kneeled on my neck and another kneeled on my back as others stood by and watched.
I spent three nights and three days in federal custody. During that time, I was never told what I was charged with, was not allowed to shower despite being covered in tear gas and pepper spray, had no phone call to my family, and no access to an attorney. I was placed on suicide watch and missed my daughter’s third birthday. No explanation. No charges. No apology. One day, I was just told, “you’re free to go.”
For me as a veteran, this is more than just a personal injustice—it’s a constitutional affront. We are taught that America stands apart because of its rule of law and protection of rights. If the government can strip those rights from us without consequence, it undermines the very system we claim makes our country stand apart.
As of now, I have submitted claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) to federal agencies related to my wrongful detention by federal officers. These claims describe my unlawful detention, including the officers’ use of excessive force, the denial of a hearing with a judge, the denial of access to legal counsel and any other contact with the outside world, and the denial of basic necessities.
While the claims are under review by the relevant federal authorities, I am continuing to speak out. I do it for two reasons. First, because I believe that Americans of all ideological stripes would agree that the government can’t just make people disappear without any process or explanation. Second, because I want to give the government a chance to admit that they were wrong.
So far the government has not done so. Instead, in response to an op-ed I published in the San Francisco Chronicle, DHS claimed that during the July 10 operation in Camarillo, CA, I “became violent and refused to comply with law enforcement,” blocked their route, and was arrested for assault. They stated that US citizens are not being “wrongfully” arrested by ICE, that their enforcement operations are highly targeted, and that their personnel conduct due diligence to know who they are targeting. DHS also framed criticisms of the operation as “smears” against ICE officers, alleging such claims have contributed to an increase in assaults on law enforcement.
DHS’s statement ignores reality and is designed to demonize and villainize people who don’t let the government trample over their rights, and aren’t afraid to speak the truth. First, I was not violent, I simply asked the officers to let me pass through because I needed to get to work; and I also complied with ICE’s demands by backing up my car. Second, the statement ignores the three days I spent in federal custody with no charges, no phone call to my family, no access to a judge or an attorney, no shower, and no explanation for their actions. It is deeply troubling that a government agency would publicly deny these facts while portraying my experience as a threat or attack on officers. The truth is that I am a US citizen and a veteran, and I will continue to pursue accountability for the rights that were violated that day.
This fight is not just about my case—it’s about ensuring that there is recourse when people are silenced, detained, or dehumanized by the very government meant to protect us. The legal system must allow accountability when government agencies overstep their authority.
Incidents like this are proof that civil rights protections in America are only as strong as our willingness to enforce them. What happens when government agencies act as though the Constitution doesn’t apply to them? Agencies like ICE cannot be allowed to operate in the shadows, unchecked and unaccountable. Civil rights mean nothing if those in power face no consequences for violating them. Accountability is the only way forward.

I do not believe any garbage that comes out of Trump’s Nazi regime.
I used to think Trump was just a fascist until I read the difference between fascist groups. It’s the Nazis who are racists just like Trump and his MAGA hate cult.

Alex is straight out lying about what Diane said and is making up stuff out of whole cloth. Diane never said what you accuse her of. But…………what else would we expect from a chaos troll, total garbage. Trump’s Gestapo is grabbing people off the streets without any due process, it’s appalling.

Alex,
I want a functional immigration system that allows migrants to apply for citizenship. Today, there seems to be no legal route to citizenship. That’s wrong.
I oppose armed men in masks, often no uniform, beating up people whom they think might be undocumented, even beating up citizens. We have long cling to the rule of law. ICE is the rule of armed and masked bullies.
Imagine, Alex, if ICE mistook you for an undocumented person. Imagine them breaking down your door in the middle of the night, putting your wrists in zip-ties, and locking you up for days without a lawyer.
Our economy needs immigrants. Many industries depend on them: the tourist industry, hotels, restaurants, agriculture, construction, and many more.

So, abolish ICE, right? Or do you think Gestapo can be reformed?

THE ACTUAL POLITICAL PURPOSE of ICE is to stage such outrageous and brutal raids in American cities that citizens strongly protest, giving Trump’s MAGA minions the opportunity to shout “insurrection” and send in armed troops to silence all opposition. READ OUR AMERICAN DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE and you will learn that the reason why our nation’s FOUNDING FATHERS declared our independence is because the King of England was sending armed troops into American cities to silence the opposition. Here is that direct quote from our Declaration of Independence explaining why we revolted against the King of England: “He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.”
BUT THAT’S EXACTLY what King Trump is doing again today with putting armed troops in American cities, making a mockery of our Declaration of Independence.
TOO FEW AMERICANS have ever actually sat down and read the INSURRECTION ACT by which Trump claims the authority to by himself order troops into any city. BUT — Section 2 of the Act says that the President CAN’T MAKE THAT DECISION BY HIMSELF. Here’s what the Act says:
“Whenever the laws of the United States shall be opposed, or the execution thereof obstructed, in any state, by combinations too powerful to be suppressed [1] BY THE ORDINARY COURSE OF JUDICIAL PROCEEDING, or [2] BY THE POWERS VESTED IN THE MARSHALS by this act, the same being notified to the President of the United States, [3] BY AN ASSOCIATE JUSTICE OR THE DISTRICT JUDGE, it shall be lawful for the President of the United States to call forth the militia of such state to suppress such combinations, and to cause the laws to be duly executed. And if the militia of a state, where such combinations may happen, shall refuse, or be insufficient to suppress the same, it shall be lawful for the President, if the legislature of the United States be not in session, to call forth and employ such numbers of the militia of any other state or states most convenient thereto, as may be necessary, and the use of militia, so to be called forth, may be continued, if necessary, until [4] THE EXPIRATION OF THIRTY DAYS after the commencement of the ensuing session.”
In other words, all these steps must be followed:
and 2: The President can’t just decide on his/her own that an uncontrollable “insurrection” exists. First, all the “ordinary course” of local law enforcement must be used and it must be shown over the course of time that the local police can’t handle the situation.
An Associate Justice or the local District Judge must consider the facts and if the facts support that local police can’t handle the situation, then the President can “call forth the militia”, the National Guard, NOT THE REGULAR U.S. ARMED FORCES, such as the U.S. Army or Marines.
After 30 days, even if the situation hasn’t changed, the militia — the Insurrection Act requires that the National Guard — MUST BE RECALLED, no matter what.
YET:
Trump has not proven in court that local police in any of the cities he has invaded or wants to invade are incapable of handling the situations, and —
No Associate Justice or District Judge has ruled that the situations cannot be handled by local police.
The only “insurrection” We the People see is an insurrection by Trump against the laws of our land, violating his Oath of Office…an impeachable offense, if we manage to elect Democratic Congress in 2026.

There is a serious problem with violence being cheered on by the Left, no doubt including many of this blog’s readers. Usually these threats of violence are just talk, but not always. Consider the record:
* Two assassination attempts against Donald Trump.
* Charlie Kirk murdered, thousands of liberals cheer on social media.
* James Hodgkinson shot up Republican Congressional baseball team.
* Attempt to murder Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, with two other justices targeted.
* Luigi Mangione murdered CEO of Group Health, is widely regarded as a hero on the Left.
* Black Lives Matter riots, in which somewhere between 30 and 40 people were murdered.
* Antifa riots in Seattle and Portland.
* Attacks on ICE–three incidents where ICE personnel shot at in Texas alone, since July.
* Robin Westman, Annunciation murderer, wrote “Kill Donald Trump” on one of his gun magazines.
* Teslas damaged by vandals, and in at least one jurisdiction, Hennepin County, Minnesota, open season on Teslas declared by county attorney’s refusal to prosecute.
* Firebombing of Tesla dealerships.
* Attempt to stab Lee Zeldin, now EPA Director.
* Two young people murdered by leftists at Israeli embassy.
* Governor Josh Shapiro’s house set on fire by leftist.
* Attorney General candidate Jay Jones expresses wish to murder Republican legislator in Virginia, and his hope that the legislator’s “little fascist” children also die.
* Today’s threat by Richard Ojeda.
And that is only a partial list. Many more instances of violent acts, let alone violent threats, by liberals could be adduced. The Democratic Party has a serious violence problem.

Do you have a source on that 30-40 murdered at BLM protests? How many of those were murdered **by police**?
Also, we don’t know who murdered Brian Thompson – the “evidence” against Mangioni is paper thin. We also don’t know for sure that Robinson murdered Kirk – there are a lot of holes in that story too – and even if he is the killer, we don’t know what motivated him – those “text messages” to his lover are clearly fake. I don’t care enough to research the rest of your claims, but I’m betting they have similar problems.
Further, you overlook the egregious amounts of violence committed by right-wingers (nearly all school shooters, for instance), not to mention police, ICE and other federal agents, and the military.

To Bill R. who said: Governor Josh Shapiro’s house set on fire by leftist.
From USA Today:
Online records show Balmer is registered as an active voter, but did not declare a political party; he last voted in the 2022 General Election.
Balmer hates both political parties and he is not a leftist, he has serious, severe psychological problems.
Bill’s information is bad and flawed, he should do more checking. Cody Balmer wanted to kill Josh Shapiro, a Democrat.

‘Black Lives Matter riots, in which somewhere between 30 and 40 people were murdered’. I do not recall this ever being mentioned in the past 4- 5 years. Not until you did. When typing this comment in on a Google search no acceptable evidence was found.
I would also draw to your attention the events of the 6th 2021, along with the violent acts in Charlottesville August 2017 and the fact that there was a Report finding right wing extremists have killed more Americans than other domestic terrorist groups(Which has now been taken down).
Are you sure want to continue this debate, here and now? Because to borrow from John Paul Jones ‘I have not yet even begun to list’

Thank you. As I said I had not begun to list.
It is very noteworthy that whereas recruitment in ICE (pursuit of people who do not appear to be white) increases. Homeland security agencies (keeping track of genuine terrorists of all stripes) are having cutbacks.
One cannot help but be prey to the feeling that the current administration wishes to have ‘Home Advantage’ for the white extremist groups to act as its unpaid militia (A common recourse by other governments with authoritarian bents)

There probably is a comprehensive list somewhere comparing incidents of violence sponsored by right-and left wing groups.
I was aware that the Dept of Justice recently removed a website recommending the prevalence of rightwing terrorists.

In a land with some many privately own guns and tempers reaching outrage level this is not healthy.
One minor example. Next year the Soccer World Cup will be hosted by USA, and concerns are being voiced in this sport’s community over how safe it will be to visit the USA….and not just from random violence either.

A blind man could see that Gish galloping anarchical Nazi supporters like Alex Barton and Bill Rosato (nice usage of ai there “Bill” with that list) are coming for this blog. First the lies (Shapiro being assailed by leftists) and provocations (Diane’s supporters “cheering” violence) to cause chaos, incredulity and confusion and then the demand to “fix” the problem by wiping out yet another voice of dissent against the tech-bro tyranny currently threatening our democracy. Don’t take their foul bait. No one here, least of all Dr. Ravitch, needs to defend the commitment to non-violence – it’s well known – they could find dozens of examples in this blog if they actually cared about truth. These prevaricating provocateurs have one goal in mind – the extermination of our democracy to institute their authoritarian fascist theocracy with demented King Cankles at the helm. They’re the ones defending zip-tying 3 year-olds in the middle of the night and pepper spraying priests, not this blog’s host and her supporters.
