Last night, I read the story in the Wall Street Journal that was breaking news. The WSJ, owned by Rupert Murdoch, had somehow obtained a leather-bound book presented to Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday. In it was a “bawdy” note from Donald Trump that hinted at their common interests.
Brian Stelter, CNN’s media expert, wrote about the reaction in the media. Most commentators jumped on the story. FOX News hosts were silent.
Stelter wrote:
At a time when other media outlets are hesitating and capitulating, Rupert Murdoch and the Wall Street Journal just stood up to President Trumpand scooped one of the biggest political stories of the summer. The print headline on Page One today reads “Trump’s Bawdy Letter to Epstein Was in 50th Birthday Album.” It is, of course, the most-read article on the Journal’s website.
And yet… Murdoch’s Fox News has not mentioned the story once. So let me take a stab at answering all the questions I’m getting about the media mogul and his role.
Murdoch, age 94, wants to have it both ways. He wants to be a newsman (that’s how he sees himself) but also needs to be a businessman. He wants a muscular Journal breaking big stories but he also needs Fox News to keep printing money for his family and other shareholders.
It’s been readily apparent for years that Fox succeeds when it is The Trump Show. So Fox does what it does, ignores what it ignores. But Murdoch, who has always cared most of all about old-fashioned newspapers, derives satisfaction and a sense of power from the Journal.
We wrote all about the operatic relationship between Murdoch and Trump in this CNN.com story overnight. I think this quote is quite telling: “Rupert loves to poke the president in the eye once in a while,” an executive who has worked with him closely told me.
Trump: I’m going to ‘sue his ass off’
Trump is, of course, taking this very personally. “I told Rupert Murdoch it was a Scam, that he shouldn’t print this Fake Story. But he did, and now I’m going to sue his ass off, and that of his third rate newspaper,” he wrote on Truth Social.
Trump’s post confirmed rumors that had been swirling in political and media circles for two days: namely, that the White House was trying to kill a damaging WSJ story. Trump said he personally spoke with both Murdoch and WSJ editor Emma Tucker.
As for a lawsuit, well… we’ll see, but no suit will take this story off the internet. The timeline is worth revisiting here. The WSJ approached Trump for comment on Tuesday. Trump derided the Epstein scandal as a “hoax” on Wednesday.
As I said on “The Source with Kaitlan Collins” last night, his well-trodden “hoax” talking point was a direct response to his concern about the looming WSJ report. Trump uses the word “hoax” to shut down conversation and discourage critical thinking; to tell his supporters to just ignore something altogether. TBD on whether it’ll work this time.
>> Inside Dow Jones HQ: After the story landed, Journal staffers expressed pride in their colleagues and in the publication for running the report despite the president’s attempt to squash it. There’s a real sense that publishing was an act of bravery…
>> BTW, WSJ has no comment on the lawsuit threat. Trump seems empowered by his settlements with Paramount and other media companies…

Not part of Stelter’s commentary:
The note from Donald to Jeffrey:
The typewritten note was an imaginary conversation between Donald and Jeffrey, inside the outline of a naked woman.
“Voice Over: There must be more to life than having everything,” the note began.
Donald: Yes, there is, but I won’t tell you what it is.
Jeffrey: Nor will I, since I also know what it is.
Donald: We have certain things in common, Jeffrey.
Jeffrey: Yes, we do, come to think of it.
Donald: Enigmas never age, have you noticed that?
Jeffrey: As a matter of fact, it was clear to me the last time I saw you.
Donald: A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.

Meanwhile, Chris Cuomo, centrist Democrat and brother to serial sex pest Democrat Andrew Cuomo, is now saying that it’s “fake” and there is no proof tying Trump to Epstein.

This subject is a puzzle that can’t be solved. Or won’t be solved. It’s not going to be a “Goodwill Hunting” plot, because the rich hunters are not janitors who will brilliantly show the answers on a blackboard. And the BMOC has NO goodwill at all! They are a bunch of little boys who play with their monies to get their revenge. Disturbing. Just about all is disturbing.

Let us stipulate that Donald Trump is a boorish, no-class man who understandably is repulsive to most people, especially to women. Like many other wealthy, powerful men (e.g. Bill Clinton) he leveraged his position to use and then discard many women. But all of them were of legal age, and there has never been any credible evidence that Trump was involved with underage girls like Epstein was.
Brian Stelter and CNN have zero moral authority to call out Fox’s coverage of this story. Everyone at CNN – like almost everyone else in the non-conservative media – barely covered the blatantly obvious cognitive decline of then President Biden. Even worse, they attacked other journalists who did raise that concern – an issue far more important at that time than whatever Trump wrote in a trivial letter back in 2003 long before he entered the political arena.

Jack Safely, which is probably a sock puppet name meaning they are a troll, is showcasing their bias and ignorance.
Bill Clinton had an affair with a willing White House intern who was legally an adult. Eventually he admitted it and apologized to the country for lying that he didn’t have an affair with Monica.
Donald Trump is a convicted rapist, fraud and felon, who is also the January 6, 2021, traitor. He never admits he’s guilty or wrong. Never!
Dozens of women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct dating back to the 1970s, and he has been found liable in court for sexual abuse. Several women have described Trump forcibly reaching under their skirts, others said he kissed them without consent, and a handful of beauty pageant contestants claimed Trump inappropriately walked in on them in changing rooms. In total, about two dozen women have spoken out publicly to accuse Trump:

Jack Safely,
Why didn’t you stipulate that TRUMP is in blatantly obvious cognitive decline? Why aren’t you furious that CNN has shown it is very pro-Trump by refusing to cover Trump’s insane rantings, like how Trump now claims that the ghost of his dead MIT professor uncle told him 10 years after his death that he taught the unabomber (who was not even a student at MIT!)
Jack Safely has no moral authority to call out CNN’s coverage of this story, since he has never acknowledged Trump’s severe cognitive decline.
Jack Safely apparently believes that men who are close friends and hang out socially with a pedophile AND the very young women the pedophile brings to meet those men are very good people.

Bob,
“The topic” (as you call it) was ALSO not the “blatantly obvious cognitive decline of then President Biden” and yet when Jack Safely brought that up in his post, you characterized Jack Safely’s post this way: “I always learn from Jack’s posts, which are always well-reasoned.”
I won’t hold my breath, but possibly someday you might actually see the implicit bias you have against anything I write, even when it has nothing to do with you and is not a response to anything you posted. You are always looking for a reason to gratuitously insult me for things that never bother you when other people write far harsher and far less “well-reasoned” posts.
If you feel compelled to write another condescending or insulting response to me, I will let it stand. I have promised myself only to respond once when you do so, to point out your double standard.

Rupert Murdoch may not have much say over what the news division of the WSJ reports.
Curious, I did some sleuthing to find out what the difference was between WSJ and FOX, since they both belong to News Corp. In short, they have different audiences.
Here’s what I learned in detail:
The Wall Street Journal and Fox News often report on the same events, but their presentation and analysis can differ significantly due to their distinct editorial stances and target audiences. The Wall Street Journal’s news pages are generally considered more liberal than the newspaper’s overall editorial page, which is center-right. Fox News, on the other hand, is known for its conservative perspective across its news and opinion programming.
The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page is known for its conservative viewpoints, while its news reporting aims for a broader, more centrist audience. Fox News, however, is widely recognized for its conservative slant in both its news and opinion sections, according to the Pew Research Center, according to UCLA College
The Wall Street Journal primarily targets business professionals, investors, and affluent consumers. Fox News’s audience is more diverse, but it’s known for attracting a large number of viewers with conservative political views.
The Wall Street Journal’s focus is on business, finance, and economics, while Fox News covers a wider range of topics, including politics, culture, and current events, with an emphasis on a conservative interpretation of these events.
While both organizations employ journalists to gather and report news, their selection of stories, interviewees, and framing of news can vary, leading to different perspectives on the same events.

This is the last time I will read this blog. It obviously appeals only to angry, ultra-partisan left-wing people who attack anyone who doesn’t recite the party line. I was warned by a retired – and fairly liberal – teacher friend that commenting on this blog is not worth any sane person’s time.
Diane, as your former friend Robert Pondiscio once said, you have allowed this blog to become a sewer. You once all but called him a racist, and you did not challenge your readers who outright called him a racist. You have sunk so far.

Jack,
I’m sorry you feel that way. I try to treat everyone with civility. I have never called anyone a racist. In the age of Trump, it’s hard not to feel despair, which is not the same as anger. Do I prefer Democrats to MAGA? I do. If that’s your definition of hyper partisan, I accept responsibility.
I’m heartsick about Trump-DOGE dismantling of the federal government. I’m heartsick that the Supreme Court is in lockstep with Trump. I’m heartsick that SCOTUS overturned Roe, that they are allowing him to fire civil servants at will, eliminate agencies and departments authorized by Congress, and give him immunity from prosecution for any crimes he commits in office.
If my views outrage you, you are under no obligation to keep reading. My views are my views. I can’t tailor them to please someone else.

I see it as a shot across the bow from Ms Maxwell and am glad Murdoch had the guts to put it out there.
Problem might be that Trump grants her a pardon and she conveniently loses all the other evidence, in thanks.

The Justice Department has all the files, including hundreds or thousands of videos taken at Epstein’s many homes. Many must be videos of sex acts between prominent men and underage girls. My speculation is that Epstein became very wealthy by blackmailing his friends and clients.

What was Murdoch’s motive in releasing this story?
Trump pressured him not to run it.
The WSJ must have rock-solid evidence.
Murdoch may have wanted to show Trump that he is not afraid of him.
FOX turned silent.
But the rumor is that Murdoch (FOX) backs Trump because it’s a profitable strategy for FOX; however, personally, Murdoch loathes him.
