This is an amazing story about the new Pope. Not only is he the first American-born pope, not only is he the first Peruvian pope, but he is descended on his mother’s side from Afro-Caribbeans.
The New York Times published the story today:
Robert Francis Prevost, the Chicago-born cardinal selected on Thursday as the new pope, is descended from Creole people of color from New Orleans.
The pope’s maternal grandparents, both of whom are described as Black or mulatto in various historical records, lived in the city’s Seventh Ward, an area that is traditionally Catholic and a melting pot of people with African, Caribbean and European roots.
The grandparents, Joseph Martinez and Louise Baquié, eventually moved to Chicago in the early 20th century and had a daughter: Mildred Martinez, the pope’s mother.
The discovery means that Leo XIV, as the pope will be known, is not only breaking ground as the first U.S.-born pontiff. He also comes from a family that reflects the many threads that make up the complicated and rich fabric of the American story.
The link is a gift article so feel free to open it and read about the genealogical research.

I hope Pope Leo continues to build on Pope Francis legacy of compassion, service and tolerance. Trump was thrilled to hear that the new pope is from the good old USA, as Trump’s only patriotism is performative gestures. If Pope Leo openly criticizes any of Trump’s policies, right wing extremists will start claiming he is a DEI hire, as they did with Kamala Harris.

Trump’s friend Laura Loomer called him a “Woke Marxist.”

I would be interested if she could quote from the sections of Das Kapital by which she reached this conclusion.
(Arguably considering the stern structures and strictures of Marxism it is very unlikely that anyone who is ‘Woke’ would be looked upon with benevolence by a Marxist Government-) so possible grade F there Ms Loomer.

“Evangelicals Are Now Rejecting ‘Liberal’ Teachings of Jesus … where some Christian conservatives are openly denouncing a central doctrine of their religion as being too “weak” and “liberal” for their liking.”

Clearly, Jesus was WOKE. Those Evangelicals who embrace Trump are not reflecting his teaching.

I had an interesting experience at a hospital Wednesday. Having a funny last name that is apparently hard to pronounce, I saw it pronounced by an African-American woman perfectly and a greying white man horribly. Was he a DEI hire?
Both, incidentally, were gracious and helpful, and very professional. Thus the foolishness of all this DEI stuff.

RERUM NOVARUM rises again with the Catholic Church’s new Pope, Pope Leo XIV.
BILLIONAIRES AND CORPORATIONS probably aren’t happy about the new Catholic Pope, Pope Leo XIV.
If billionaires and corporations were hoping for the Catholic Church to take a turn away from the social justice leadership of Pope Francis I, they didn’t get what they wanted — in fact, they got the OPPOSITE of what they wanted.
By choosing the name “Leo XIV”, the new Pope has signaled that he will follow along the road laid out by Pope Leo XIII who issued the encyclical “Rerum Novarum”, which means “Of Revolutionary Things” and is subtitled “On the Condition of Labor”. It pushed for the rights of workers to unionize and to get their fair share of the profits they create for corporations.
RERUM NOVARUM is the Catholic Church’s strongest social justice document and is in line with the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution which puts The Common Good far ahead of individual wealth and profit.
So, workers’ rights and social justice for the Common Good of all, not just a few, is going to be the focus of the worldwide Catholic Church from now on.

Lots of Catholics, Like JD Vance and Tom Homan, will be very unhappy with the new Pope.
