Trump has been waging war against the nation’s top universities, demanding that they accept his orders to stamp out DEI or lose their federal grants. Trump uses the phony claim that he is combatting anti-Semitism, but the reality is that he is silencing academic freedom and free speech. For the record, Trump has accepted the support of American Nazis, so his concern for Jews cannot be taken seriously.
The first campus to receive Trump’s demands was Columbia University. Trump threatened to withhold $400 million if Columbia did not put several departments (Middle Eastern Studies, African American Studies, and South Asian Studies) into receivership. Sadly, Columbia complied.
Harvard was threatened with the loss of $9 billion in research grants. Harvard said NO. Harvard will not bend the knee to Trump as he seeks to trample academic freedom of faculty and students.
Mike Damiano of The Boston Globe reported:
Lawyers for Harvard University said Monday the school will not comply with a new list of demands sent by the Trump administration on Friday, as part of the government’s purported crackdown on antisemitism and alleged civil rights violations at elite universities.
The new demands expand on a previous list sent to Harvard’s leaders on April 3, which ordered Harvard to close diversity offices and cooperate with federal immigration authorities, among other directives.
In a message to the campus community Monday, Harvard president Alan Garber vowed that the university will not yield to the government’s pressure campaign. “The University will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights,” Garber said.
Harvard’s stance is the most forceful pushback yet against the Trump administration’s crackdown on elite universities. It is a sharp contrast to the approach taken by Columbia University’s leaders who acquiesced to a list of demands from the Trump administration last month. Columbia promised to change student disciplinary procedures and place a Middle East studies department under new oversight, among other measures.
The Harvard demands went further. Two weeks ago, the Trump administration’s antisemitism task force placed $9 billion in federal funding under review and followed up with its first list of demands.
Then, last Friday, the government sent Harvard a much more detailed explanation of its demands, which Harvard released Monday afternoon. Harvard’s lawyers said the university “is not prepared to agree to demands that go beyond the lawful authority of this or any administration.”

Harvard University’s endowment was valued at $53.2 billion at the end of fiscal year 2024. This represented an increase of $2.5 billion from the $50.7 billion at the end of fiscal year 2023. The strong investment returns of 9.6% in FY24 contributed to this growth.
Harvard University uses its endowment fund to support nearly every aspect of its operations, including faculty salaries, student financial aid, research, and various other academic programs, libraries, and campus activities. The endowment is the largest source of revenue for the university, contributing significantly to its overall budget.
Compared to Columbia
Columbia University’s endowment fund is worth approximately $13.64 billion. This is a significant amount of capital, and it is managed by the university’s investment office to generate returns that support student, faculty, and university activities.
“Federal funding cuts are raising questions about university endowments. Here’s what some are worth and how they work”

Great to see that Harvard isn’t taking the easy path of capitulating to the Bully’s demands.

At last! A university with the guts to defend freedom!!!
As for all those law firms that caved: How can a client trust that a law firm will fight for the client’s rights when the law firm won’t even fight for its own rights?

Harvard’s response is big, heavy, well-positioned in the Power Elite PUSHBACK. And the no compliance is also coming from State Education Authorities, the Chicago Teachers Union, Corporate America, Wall Street and protesting youth on USA 🇺🇸 military base schools around the world. It may look like the deck is stacked against us but it only looks that way and as we all know, looks are often deceiving.

Northwestern University law faculty filed a lawsuit to block the U.S. House Education committee from accessing law school records. Nice that some universities are exhibiting a spine.

You established many years ago that you have digressed into a far Left nut, but this posting is bad even for you. Trump has many glaring and appalling flaws, but he’s an anti-Semite? His daughter converted to Judaism, he is close to his Jewish grandchildren, and he is the most pro-Israel President in history, agree with his position or not. Genuine scholars respect solid evidence, while extreme partisans just throw out whatever falsehoods serve their purposes.

Why do so many Nazis love Trump?
Why did 80% of American Jews vote against Trump?
Jews don’t like fascists. Trump’s a fascist.

People who are truly concerned about antisemitism do not include Nazis when referring to folks as “very fine people”, as he did regarding those in Charlottesville who did not want Confederate statues to be removed –even though they marched there the night before carrying tiki torches and chanting, “Jews will not replace us.”

I support Israel’s right to defend itself. I do not support Netanyahu’s brutal war against innocent Palestinians, his murder of medical personnel, and his refusal to end the war. As soon as the war ends, he will be on trial for his criminal actions before October 7.
Trump is an anti-Semite and a racist. He is also a fascist who admires other fascists. He worships at the feet of Putin. I live in NYC. We know Trump well as a playboy, a sexual predator, a phony, a failed businessman who went bankrupt six times, a draft dodger.
The only puzzle to us is how he fooled so many people who thought he was their god.

Same reason many Conservative and most Orthodox Jews in the US favor political parties and politicians who are on the right, the Likud (and Netanyahu) in Israel and the GOP here: because being a tiny country that is surrounded by Arabs has long posed an existential threat to Israel, resulting in many terrorist attacks and wars over the years. They think conservative parties/politicians are more likely to be war-mongers who will support them and their fight for the survival of the state of Israel, as well as help fund it. (I lived there during the Yom Kippur War.)

P.S. Many Israelis are not particularly religious Jews, but Nixon was president when I lived there and he proved them and their views of our politics right, as have subsequent Republicans. Like most Americans though, I’m a Reform Jew and a Democrat, who believes strongly in “tikun olam,” Healing the World. So while I too support the continued state of Israel, I think that is best facilitated by negotiation and compromise, not “strongmen” who favor wars.

Trump once expressed disappointment that he had a black man handling the books for his New Jersey operations (and we all know how well his decision to operate three different casinos in the same town worked out – he owns none of them now). He is quoted as saying what he needed were some smart Jews.
Donald is a very loud New York caricature, who classifies everyone by their gender and ethnicity. There are literally no guardrails on his racism and sexism. He tailors his response to everyone based on a shallow system of racial/ethnic tropes which is as deep as he can get.

In a civil society, brains and heart SHOULD trump money and power. Many thanks to Harvard for trying to teach that lesson to a stone cold dunderhead who really needs to learn it! Too bad the malignant narcissist can’t comprehend that having a relative who is a brilliant professor is a far cry from actually being one yourself.

Indiana plans to comply with Trump push to ban DEI from schools
April 9, 2025,
The Indiana Department of Education will comply with a federal order to remove diversity, equity, and inclusion from schools, saying it will collect signed forms from schools and districts saying they will abide by the Trump administration directive.
The department “fully intends to sign the certification,” said department spokesperson Courtney Crown in a Wednesday email to Chalkbeat.
Indiana’s move comes in response to the U.S. Department of Education April 3 announcement that states will have to certify schools are in compliance with the administration’s controversial interpretations of civil rights law. States that don’t agree to this certification will not receive federal funding, the department said.
Federal funding represents about 10% of all K-12 funding nationwide but makes up a larger share of local budgets in high-poverty districts.
By certifying that their schools do not use or promote DEI, state education officials would be promising that all of their school districts are in compliance. They would also be acknowledging that they could be liable for fraud under the False Claims Act if they request federal funds and are later found to be in violation of the law.
Trump has moved aggressively to root out DEI from the federal government and other institutions. In January, he signed an executive order seeking to withhold federal funding from schools that he said were promoting “discriminatory equity ideology.” The president and his allies say DEI amounts to unlawful and harmful discrimination, but critics allege Trump’s attacks unfairly malign diversity programs that help students.
Initially, federal officials gave state education departments 10 days to certify, but the Trump Education Department has extended that deadline to April 24.
