Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut is a stalwart ally of public schools. When Democrats controlled the House of Representatives, she was chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and she will be again when Democrats regain control of the House. She knows the federal budget.
Check her attachment to see how many teachers will be laid off in YOUR Congressional district. The deep cuts will affect both Republican and democratic districts.
Rep. DeLauro issued a warning about the deep cuts to education that Trump and Musk are planning:
WASHINGTON — Last week, through his unlawful executive order, President Trump took another step in his plan to eliminate the Department of Education. Next, he plans to eliminate Title I grants that help 26 million students learn. House Appropriations Committee and Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro released a new fact sheet detailing the number of teachers in each district that stand to be kicked out of the classroom, leaving millions of students across the country without a teacher.
“We are in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, and Elon Musk and President Trump are making it worse. President Trump promised to fight for the working class, but instead, he put Elon Musk and billionaires in charge of the government. His plan to eliminate Title I grants that help 26 million students in schools across the country would mean that nearly 300,000 teachers across the United States stand to be kicked out of the classroom. This would leave millions of students without a teacher. President Trump and unchecked billionaire Elon Musk do not care about helping hardworking people build a better life or helping our kids learn. They care only about tax breaks for billionaires and the biggest corporations.”
A fact sheet on the number of teachers in each district that stand to be kicked out of the classroom is here.
Ranking Member DeLauro’s previous statements on the unlawful elimination of Education employees can be found here and here.
Her letter to Secretary McMahon demanding answers to mass firings is here. Her February statement on Elon Musk’s and President Trump’s dismantling of the Department of Education is here.

Well, even though I hold a professional license in English Language Arts, I am appointed as a special education teacher. So, I suppose in my Congressperson’s district–Yvette Clarke, New York 09–I am on the chopping block.
Well, it was fun (at least the teaching young people part of it) while it lasted.

Title 1 is money well spent as it mostly funds services for direct compensatory instruction for struggling students. It is often use to provide for additional instruction in reading, math and English for newly arrived immigrant students. Without these supports so many students, many of whom are extremely disadvantaged, will flounder and be left behind. Title 1 provides much needed support for these young people. The goal of Title 1 is to improve academic achievement. It is often viewed as an “equity” program, and as such there are higher numbers of Black and Brown students receiving these interventions. Maybe that is one of the main reasons this funding is a target of Trump and Musk. As Representative DeLauro states, Trump and Musk do not care about working and middle class students. They only care about tax cuts for billionaires.
Throughout my career as an ESL/ENL teacher, my salary was funded in part by Title 1. Title 1 helped provide some of the funds for the materials budget of the program. With the support from both Title 1 and the district, the vast majority of the students I served became self-sufficient, productive members of society including many that graduated from college. That is how we should measure success. IMO, Title 1 helped fulfill the promise of this country with hope and opportunity for all. Education is a far better collective, social investment than building more prisons to warehouse the poor and violent offenders.

I concur. For more than 30 years, I worked with the at-risk youth in Title I schools. If not for that money, we would be working on more than “bare bones.” Once again, the kids who need the most help will be pushed aside. And what happens to these kids? In my experience, they join gangs because at least in the gang they are a “somebody.” As an art teacher, there wasn’t a day that went by someone said, “You can’t teach art all day; you need to put math or science in it — maybe we will keep it in the school curriculum. As it is, kids need to go to school before dawn to take music. I spent so much of my own money on art supplies. But those classes will be the first to go. And, once again, the teachers will still be expected to perform at the same level while having kids sit on counters because there is no money for desks (I experienced that). It is sickening, but if you want to make something fail keep taking things away and then say, “See public education doesn’t work.” I saw that more than 33K CA teachers are expected to be cut. George Carlin explained it all years ago as he spoke about “the owners.” This was recorded years ago.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNXHSMmaq_ (Please be reminded he uses a lot of profanity, but the message it apropos).

These are essential numbers to get us mobilized.
One of the organizers I worked with last weekend here in NY-19 used the line: “Your story is your superpower.”
Ten thousand job cuts is a statistic. A teacher or child you know who has been hurt by the DOGE craziness can’t be written off as “fake news”. Take a moment and tell one of those stories. And, if you don’t know someone yet who has been hurt, seek out one of those personal tragedies and share it.
Newborns hurt, veterans harmed, the pollution that will fill a local creek…it’s time to shout those stories.

Does anyone reading this think that the Democrats are going to retake one or more Houses of Congress in the midterms?
I hope my gut is wrong!
I don’t think so. The lifelong cheater and liar in the White House already has the fix in to make sure that does not happen again. If the fix isn’t in yet, it’s on its way.
The only way the Democrats can win back one or both houses in Congress is if they do it in states where they control the election process with the ability to stop Don the Con from having his people threaten, lie and cheat for him.
If that happens the malignant narcissist will challenge it every step of the way. Another 60+ court battles as he shouts they cheated while he’s cheating.
As long as the alleged rapist of a 13-year-old at one of Epstein’s adolescent rape parties is alive and in power, I do not think this country will have an honest election. Elections will be rigged to favor the sadist sociopath.

Trump is a master at projecting. If he accuses someone of something, it is always something he has done.
Four years of complaining about the “rigged” election that he lost should have prepared us to know: the 2024 election was rigged. Between Musk and Putin, Trump never had to worry.
