Adam Kinzinger is a military veteran and was a Republican member of Congress. He voted to impeach Trump, then served on the J6 Commission. His was a reliable Republican vote until January 6, 2021.
When I decided to stand against Donald Trump, I knew exactly what was coming: backlash, threats, smear campaigns, even the occasional call to “watch my back.” These are the predictable tactics of a bully who’s cornered and desperate to regain control. But here’s the truth — I’m absolutely, resolutely unafraid of Donald Trump. Even after his win. Because I know how this all ends, and it won’t be pretty.
You see, Trump depends on fear. He builds his whole image around being “strong,” “tough,” a supposed champion of the “common man.” But strength doesn’t come from endless bullying, degrading insults, or an ability to throw temper tantrums every time he doesn’t get his way. That’s not strength; it’s weakness. Real strength means standing up for the truth even when it’s hard, even when it costs you. Trump has never had the courage to do that. I have.
Some people might assume I should worry about Trump or fear his so-called “retaliation.” Let’s be honest — what would that even look like? Mean posts on his social media platform? Outrageous nicknames? Maybe a mob of his most ardent supporters trying to intimidate me or my family? Been there, seen it. And I’m still here. Trump’s tactics are predictable, tired, and, frankly, more sad than threatening.
What Trump and his enablers don’t seem to understand is that I’m free from the shackles of political expediency. I didn’t get into this line of work to serve a political cult or bend the knee to any one person. I serve the Constitution and the country I swore an oath to protect. My loyalty is to the principles that make America strong, not to a man who’s turned our democracy into his personal grievance project.
Trump is, at his core, a coward. When things get tough, he runs. He ran from the military, despite claiming he could take on foreign leaders; he’s spent years hiding behind lawyers, attacking the justice system rather than standing tall and defending his actions in court. Time and again, he’s shown that he’s all bark, no backbone.
Contrast that with what I and others in the military have done. We sign up knowing the risks, knowing we could face life-threatening situations, all in the service of a cause greater than ourselves. Trump has never faced a risk he didn’t try to dodge or an obligation he didn’t shirk. I’m proud to stand up against him because he embodies everything I oppose: cowardice, corruption, a complete lack of respect for the rule of law.
I’m not backing down, not because I’m trying to make a name for myself, but because it’s simply the right thing to do. America deserves leaders who aren’t afraid of bullies, who don’t bend to the winds of political fortune, and who don’t take the easy way out. America will reject him again, in due time. It’s a process, but the long memory of history will remember his influence as a flash in a pan. And that starts by showing him, and anyone like him, that fear-mongering is no match for true courage.

Trump knows how to delegate to those who can’t wait to do harm. THEN he runs away and claims he had nothing to do with it while, at the same time, throwing his delegates under the bus. Trump is the most innocent person on earth. CBK

“America will reject him again, in due time. It’s a process, but the long memory of history will remember his influence as a flash in a pan.” eight years ago when we were facing Hillary’s loss, a well respected colleague wrote that Trump was a hiccup (a mosquito) and I was furious; also he wrote the email on a professional letter-head that he was president of a professional organization. It bothered me then that people were not realilzing the dangers of the authoritarian personality being in charge. Now we see the president elect gathering a “Coterie of oligarchs” around him and some of those are even more threatening in my way of thinking. For those of us who feel extremely vulnerable, Elizabeth Warren’s list of steps to do now has helped me over this week. I admire that some people will be strong and resilient and protect the Constitution and serve the country and Adam has written it well… Inside i still feel that this is scary and with climate change or even another “pandemic”/plague the ship is tossed ; the most vulnerable people are harmed and right now it is our migrant population that we need for agriculture, for human services and health aides, and it is also our kids and grandkids.

We are not worried about DJT bullying Adam K. It is all the other everyday people who will be TARGETED by the newly-empowered street thugs. In their neighborhoods, at church, at school, in the grocery, at the hair salon, at the school board meeting, in the library or at the gas station these decent folk will be placed in the crosshairs of contempt, verbal abuse, intimidation, threats and theft. Adam won’t be there to console them or to combine with them in defense of an intelligent/enlightened Democracy. They will be left feeling alone and outnumbered and “outgunned”. That is not a healthy psychological profile but it is one Adam might need to contemplate as he works to preserve what is left of our way of life.

the respected and admired colleague took a “long” view I guess but here we are 8 or 10 years down the road…. Our colleague wrote in his appeal to the profession. “Op-Ed – Importance of Trump’s Presidency (a portion of what he wrote)
“The reckless behavior of Trump’s campaign and presidency fail by any measure to compare to our most revered leaders. His inability to tell the truth, his allegiance to his base, rather than all Americans, and his narcissistic, xenophobic, and mysogynist articulations are destroying the essence of what our Framers designed in the 18th century, not to mention possible ties to the Russian government, corporate connections, and pure selfish attention to his own greed. Given the way the American people felt in 2016, it is my belief that Trump’s election was a necessary outcome if we are to return to the aims and purposes that our Founders believed in…….. the American people will have a chance to take the necessary steps to reverse this trend. Unfortunately, it may have taken an outrageous demonstration of what a demagogue can do. This hopefully will alarm the nation to revive its principles and values of our American government before it is highjacked by ill-informed, selfish Americans, void of any empathy or understanding of others. It is my hope that this time will be considered a hiccup in American history. Perhaps this will help us return to the fundamental principles and values laid out by our Framers over two hundred and thirty years ago. ” op-ed by R.D.
I resent that the professional colleague described this as a “necessary outcome” because that is his philosophy of life and it is not mine. And, we have seen things get much worse in terms of Russia, the Ukrainian war, the turmoil in the middle east as well as the psychological deterioration of mental status and the OLIGARCHS all waiting in the wings to take over….
Salman Rushdie wrote “Run Ann Frank, they are coming for you tomorrow” and that is where I am living and thinking today (with a few friends.

Just curious why you are here?
I’m assuming right wing trolls don’t get paid anymore. If you are a true believer who has nothing better to do than to come on a blog of mostly teachers and obnoxiously gloat about “your” victory and insult and threaten people who have done nothing to you, then perhaps you don’t realize what your posts make you look like.
If Kamala had won, no one here would waste their time posting on pro-Trump blogs to obnoxiously insult Trump voters. Ever hear the expression “thou dost protest too much?”
You got exactly what you said you wanted. You now have exactly what you want, and instead of being happy, perhaps celebrating with friends, you come here over and over again to insult us and tell us how very, very happy you are. The more over the top your claims of feeling joy, the more you appear to be having second thoughts.
Tell us again that you are feeling such joy at your victory that you have nothing better to do than find some Kamala-supporters and gloat. The more you do, the more you sound like you are trying to convince yourself. The more you deny that’s true and insult us, the more you clearly regret your victory.
So go out and celebrate. Or if you need reassurance because you know you made a big mistake, keep coming here to protest too much and we will know how very terrible you feel deep down.
The more you post here gloating, the more you show you have deep regrets. So go out and celebrate with your like-minded friends, if you aren’t as deeply unhappy as your posts make you appear.

A great many Charlies will come to have second thoughts. Just wait. It won’t take long. It seems a good many Charlies are already past the shock of Trump winning, past resisting to understand what it means beyond their selfishness for Trump to have won, past being angry with themselves for having voted for Trump, and are now desiring a catharsis, perhaps like Charlie, here, before finally moving on to accept their culpability in destroying civil society and democracy.
Good for the Charlies. Still, avoid getting caught up in looming propagandist groupthink that the Charlies will have become fundamentally wiser human beings. They will not have. They will still be susceptible to Trumpism, just in different ways.

KUDOS FOR KINZINGER!!!
The only way to deal with a bully like Trump is to get in his face and STAY THERE!!!
Prior to the just-passed presidential election, Biden had restrained Ukraine from attacking the Russian oil refineries and oil fields which fuel the Russian war machine because that would drive up the price of gasoline in the U.S. at a time when Democrats were already under pressure because of inflation. Likewise, Biden restrained Israel from attacking Iran’s refineries, oil depots, and oil fields for the same reason, even though such attacks are the only way to cripple Iran’s ability to fund groups like Hamas.
But now that the election is over and Trump is soon to be President again, if Biden allows the destruction of Russia’s and Iran’s oil production, the price of gasoline and everything made from petroleum will soar, causing soaring inflation and wrecking Trump’s plans. And, by association — Trump elected = soaring prices — in the mind’s of voters, Trump will be to blame.
I’m willing to pay more for gasoline and other things to see Trump struggle with a problem that cannot be solved during the next four years.

As a former military officer and retired federal agent, I am embarrassed that so many of my fellow Americans have fallen into the cult of personality that is Donald Trump. Whether it’s stoking fears of mass migration into our country, belittling women using crude and demeaning epithets, or inciting a mob to storm the seat of government using gross hyperbole and outright lies, Trump is showing all of us not only his true nature but his cowardice in the face of challenge and legitimate authority. There are times now that I dwell on what Trump might do once he returns to the White House. But I remember that those thoughts and the anxiety they could bring only serve to embolden the weakling we all know Trump to be. I know that the men and women who continue to serve this nation and who uphold their oath to the Constitution have the power to defeat the specter of authoritarianism and in the end show everyone the weak, petty, and small-minded bully Donald Trump truly is.
