ProPublica tells the story of 18-year-old Nevaeh Crain. She was pregnant. She was holding a baby shower to celebrate the imminent birth of the baby. At her party, she collapsed in pain. Her mother took her to three different hospitals. The first two sent her away without treating her. The doctors and nurses in Texas hospitals are aware of the draconian abortion ban in Texas; it threatens to harshly punish any medical personnel who are involved in an abortion with loss of their license and as much as 99 years in prison.
Would anyone risk their own life to save the pregnant girl who was screaming in pain?
Nevaeh Crain died because of Texas’ extreme abortion ban. She was killed by politicians and religious zealots. She was killed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. She should be alive.
ProPublica reported:
Candace Fails screamed for someone in the Texas hospital to help her pregnant daughter. “Do something,” she pleaded, on the morning of Oct. 29, 2023.
Nevaeh Crain was crying in pain, too weak to walk, blood staining her thighs. Feverish and vomiting the day of her baby shower, the 18-year-old had gone to two different emergency rooms within 12 hours, returning home each time worse than before.
The first hospital diagnosed her with strep throat without investigating her sharp abdominal cramps. At the second, she screened positive for sepsis, a life-threatening and fast-moving reaction to an infection, medical records show. But doctors said her six-month fetus had a heartbeat and that Crain was fine to leave.
Now on Crain’s third hospital visit, an obstetrician insisted on two ultrasounds to “confirm fetal demise,” a nurse wrote, before moving her to intensive care.
By then, more than two hours after her arrival, Crain’s blood pressure had plummeted and a nurse had noted that her lips were “blue and dusky.” Her organs began failing.
Hours later, she was dead.
Fails, who would have seen her daughter turn 20 this Friday, still cannot understand why Crain’s emergency was not treated like an emergency.
But that is what many pregnant women are now facing in states with strict abortion bans, doctors and lawyers have told ProPublica.
“Pregnant women have become essentially untouchables,” said Sara Rosenbaum, a health law and policy professor emerita at George Washington University.
Texas’s abortion ban threatens prison time for interventions that end a fetal heartbeat, whether the pregnancy is wanted or not. It includes exceptions for life-threatening conditions, but still, doctors told ProPublica that confusion and fear about the potential legal repercussions are changing the way their colleagues treat pregnant patients with complications.

Every time I read a story like this one I weep. This outcome could have been prevented.
The party of Lincoln is broken with that satanic Dumpster at its helm.

The Crains live in Texas. Texas legislators, governor and attorney General are 100% in the forced birth camp. These people aren’t pro-life. They are interested in controlling women and pushing women into a submissive, subservient role in society.
I am sure that Neveah Crain and her mother never for one moment thought that Neveah would be denied medically appropriate, life-saving care that, had she received it in this case could have saved Neveah’s life. If her fetus wouldn’t have survived, Neveah would have had the chance to mourn the death, to recover physically and emotionally, with thr possibily of children in her future.
BUT. Neveah and her mother were both “pro-life”. If Mrs. Crain voted for these legislators and governor, then she participated in creating the hellscape that Texas has become for women.
I’m genuinely sorry for this family; votes have consequences, and Thus death is inr of them.

I am crying reading this. The only way this will change, sadly and unbelievably, is if the people responsible feel it financially. There needs to be lawsuits. Massive awards to families. And more news stories. Why are these stories not on the front page. Otherwise those responsible will just pretend it’s not really happening.

Just a suggestion.
Every time there is a news item about the death of a pregnant woman in circumstances such as this a copy of the details should be sent to prominent member of the Republican Party associated with the anti-abortion legislation.
With a simple message….
‘Where is the pro-life in this?’
Of course as with gun-death they will wriggle and squirm with similar excuses, but they should be made to realise they have a responsibility here too.

The right-to-life people love fetuses but not after they are born. They don’t care about children who get gunned down in school. They don’t care about women who die due to lack of health care. It’s the fetus they love. Only the fetus

Moreover, the instant that defenseless fetus starts breathing on its own and producing its own blood, it is responsible for its health care. After all, if you start providing health care for these babies, they will never develop self-reliance and that good old American determination.

I doubt if many really care about the actual foetuses themselves either, just their wretched, twisted ideas and their smug self-righteousness.

If Trump wins, I would get my tired old body to Washington to hold a sign for one of these poor women in a massive parade. I don’t want my children and their children, especially the girls, to live in a world that places so little value on the lives of over half the population. Maybe we could all wear handmaiden hoods. Do you think Trump would dare to attack a massive march of women?

Names should be remembered.
May this young woman and others caught in this sick doctors’ refusal to live up to the Hippocratic and common sense Oath have their names forever remembered on a class action law suit against the hospitals and the States.
And, their names and cases should be cited every time data are released about the exodus of doctors and slash in medical school applications in Roe-overturned states.
In one of those States… today we watch the Constitutional Amendment vote to reverse Missouri’s total ban that was enacted the day after Roe was reversed.

And, the blood is on these, Republican legislators’ hands, and, unless these Republicans’ daughters ALL get raped and pregnant, and DIES, nothing will begin to change, and, even if the female descendants of the Republicans dies because they can’t get abortions to save their lives, the abortion ban still, continues to get, enforced by the, government, because, the Republicans are, DEADSET, in, conservativism.
