After Jeff Bezos, billionaire owner of The Washington Post, stopped publication of the editorial board’s endorsement of Kamala Harris, digital subscribers revolted. According to a report in The Post, at least 250,000 canceled their subscriptions.
Past and present journalists at the newspaper urged readers not to cancel. Loss of revenue means future layoffs.
Even with the cancellation of the endorsement, the Post remains the most forthright and persistent critic of Trump and his racism, misogyny, xenophobia, as well as his all-around unfitness for office.
Those who look for a future with a stable, functioning two-party system–post-MAGA–should resubscribe.

my question is simple: Will the publicity associated with Bezos pulling endorsement because of Trump pressure actually increase subscribers in the time after the election?

What promise, deal and/or threat did Traitor Trump make for Bezos to do that?
Bezos must be really dumb to think he can trust someone like the convicted rapist, fraud and felon Doanld Trump who became a traitor on January 6, 2021.
Doesn’t Bezos know no one should ever trust a malignant narcissist sociopath like that illegal alien (ET) who can’t be human. So, what planet is the orange toddler from? Maybe a planet called HELL.

There have been many who have concluded that despite much excellent work, this decision at the Post is a frightening harbinger of obeying in advance that must be responded to in a strong way, including the real possibility of canceling subscriptions.
We can also note that there have been dozens upon dozens, if not hundreds, of horrible headlines in the Post that have been misleading at best and Biden-Harris bashing at worst. For all the good done at the Post (and there are opinion writers I look forward to reading every day), they have not by any means always been a voice for preservation and defense of our democracy. In fact, at times they have been enablers of the potential authoritarian onslaught.

I believe it is crucial to take a firm stand at the get go. I would like to see the journalists with star power at WAPO form their own independent newspaper. When MAGA is over… at the end of the day… Bezos is still Bezos and will always put his interests above integrity and free press. He needs to step down and let WAPO continue or journalists with integrity should form a new paper.. perhaps calling it a The Washington Independent Post. He showed his true colors. Don’t need to see those colors go into hiding post MAGA and reappear the next time Bezos fears loss of power.

If “step down” means sell the paper, that will probably be bad for the paper.

Good point. Bezos shouldn’t profit by the sale!

It’s a money losing paper. Unless it’s bought by another multi-billionaire who doesn’t care about whether it makes money, the next owner will cut costs.

FLERP,
You are right: WaPo is losing money: $77 million last year.
Bezos hired Will Lewis to stop the losses.
Losing 250,000 paid subscribers doesn’t help.

I feel like every hour there is more and more horrific news, about tRump and what he and his followers are doing/saying. I am on overload right now and yes, I have a bad case of TDS. We MUST win this election! I didn’t cancel my WAPO subscription, I had already cancelled my LATimes subscription (they have too much Dodger and USC news for me) two days prior. I subscribe to the Atlantic, NYTimes, and Politico. I easily can give up my local LATimes, but I really need the national opinion writers,
I don’t know about anyone else, but I have been trying to only listen to and read the positive messages the past week or so. I don’t think Bezo’s will give up the WAPO. If it loses money, it gives him a tax write off, and it’s just a drop in the bucket for him.

RG,
I agree with you!
It’s normal to suffer TDS.

That’s the thing about Trump. If you actually pay attention and watch him every day, the number of crazy and awful things he does and says is just impossible to keep up with. It turns you into Lucy at the chocolate factory. And you can’t remember half the things that were outraging you the day before because the crap just keeps coming at you.
