Rex Huppke is a columnist for USA Today. He wrote on Twitter about two important tech bros who are his pets. Then he quoted his own tweet as “evidence” that it was true.
He wrote in USA Today:
Given all the uproar over GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s baseless, utterly false and profoundly racist claims that Haitian immigrants are eating people’s pets in an Ohio town, I would like to make a public statement that is supported by an equal amount of evidence:
“Not long ago, billionaire Elon Musk ate my cat, Mr. Smushyface. Days later, Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, stole and then barbecued and ate my dog, Zoe. I remained quiet about these incidents for fear other tech bros like Musk and Vance might come for my hamster, Dennis. But after much thoughts and prayer, I have decided to honor the memories of Zoe and Mr. Smushyface by letting the world know what I claim to be the truth.”
For those fortunate enough to not yet be aware of the “immigrants are eating our pets” allegations that bubbled up from the right-wing fever swamps and got spouted by Trump during Tuesday’s presidential debate, here’s the deal: A random Facebook post, grounded in something along the authoritative lines of “I heard from a friend of a friend’s kid,” claimed a cat went missing and was (maybe) eaten by a Haitian immigrant.
It’s true that JD Vance ate my dog because I wrote it on the internet
There’s no evidence of that happening, of course. But xenophobic fearmongers saw it is a perfect way to monger some xenophobic fear. So Musk started trumpeting the ludicrous claim on X, the enormous social media platform he owns, and then Vance was babbling about it and then Trump spoke the words no presidential-debate-watcher ever imagined they’d hear, saying of Springfield, Ohio: “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”
OK.
If an actual former president who is also the Republican Party’s standard-bearer and its presidential nominee is so concerned about a fabricated story aimed at dehumanizing an entire swath of people, he damn well better be equally concerned about my story, which is true because I read it on the internet. (Granted, what I read on the internet was from my own social media post, but that’s not important.)
My brave admission that Elon ate my cat
Here’s how this real-because-I-say-it-is story of Vance and Musk being ravenous pet devourers developed.
On Monday, I bravely posted the following on X, the social media cesspool formerly known as Twitter ‒ “True story: Elon Musk ate my cat. Please share your own story of Elon Musk eating your pet.”
The response was overwhelming and revealed my pet was far from the only victim of Musk’s decidedly un-American appetite. Others came out of the we’ve-lost-our-pets-to-hungry-tech-bros closet, with posts that included:
“Elon Musk ate my precious bearded dragon Cupcake.”
“Elon Musk ate my worm farm!”
“True story: Elon Musk ate my ferret.”
“He ate my kitten. I was at a conference where he was one day, holding my kitten. He grabbed it from my hand, poured ketchup on it, and just started chomping into it. It was so scary.”
There’s as much evidence Musk ate my cat as there is immigrants ate pets
Posts on X containing false or inaccurate information are often corrected with a “community note.” No such note appeared on my post or on any of the replies, which I took as proof that it’s all 100% true.
Buoyed by the support of other victims, I posted an additional admission Thursday: “JD Vance ate my dog, Zoe. It’s true, because I am posting it here.”
I added: “I fear there is widespread pet-eating in the tech-bro community. They’re coming to our cities and towns, we don’t know much about them, they bring radical new ideas about what they view as ‘free speech,’ and they are apparently eating our pets. This has to stop.”
Support from others who say their pets were eaten by Musk and Vance
Again, the responses revealed that Vance’s consumption of my beloved Zoe was not a one-off.
“I caught JD Vance running away with my dog in his grocery wagon.”
“I walked into my house only to find Elon up to his shoulders in my fish tank, bobbing for them while JD chased my cat with a fork and knife! It was horrifying!”
“My Pugs, Montez and Pearl, may they rest in peace, were also consumed by Elon Musk and JD Vance. They had a Pug-B-Que. I grieve every single day for my Pug babies.”
What monsters.
I hope Donald Trump condemns his running mate’s pet-eating ways
Clearly there’s more than enough evidence here for Trump to loudly address the problem, condemn his running mate and Musk and imply there’s something scary, evil and unwelcome about wealthy tech dudes who incorrectly think they’re hilarious.
Nothing will bring back my precious Mr. Smushyface or my lovable dog Zoe. Nothing can bring back any of the wonderful pets I know were stolen and eaten by Vance and Musk because I read something somebody posted on the internet and declined to consider it might just be fabricated bull(expletive).
Something must be done about these rabid tech bros before all our pets wind up down their seemingly bottomless gullets.
I look forward to Trump making this a central part of his campaign in the weeks ahead.

While liberals s are still howling about Trump’s histrionic pet rantings, a known innocent man is set to be executed tonight and no Democrat that I’m aware of has said a word. In fact, the Democrats quietly dropped opposition to the death penalty from their platform. Not surprising from a “Top Cop”, I suppose. But I’m old enough to remember when Democrats at least pretended to care about justice for marginalized people.

Dienne 77, do you fact check before you post a factless rant like this one?
I fact checked your rant. Guess what I found in one Newsweek piece? And that’s just three pull quotes from that one news piece.
“Bell, a Democrat who is running for Congress, filed a motion in January to vacate Williams’ conviction, writing in a motion that DNA testing of the knife used in the crime could exclude Williams as Gayle’s killer.” …
“The Midwest Innocence Project, the NAACP and the Council on American-Islamic Relations have championed Williams’ case. Also, more than 1.3 million signatures have been collected on two petitions calling for his execution to be halted.”
Martin Luther King III, the son of the late civil rights icon, wrote: “Marcellus Williams’ execution would be a travesty and a miscarriage of justice. His questionable conviction–including DNA evidence pointing to his innocence–makes a clear case that Gov. Parson must halt this execution. The state cannot–must not–take an innocent life.”

“As of January 2023, the death penalty was legal in 27 states. In three of these states [WITH DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS] (California, Pennsylvania, and Oregon), the death penalty had been placed under a gubernatorial moratorium, though the laws providing for the death penalty in those states remained on the books. The remaining states disallowed the death penalty. The death penalty is permitted under federal law, as well.[1]
In 1846, Michigan became the first state to abolish the death penalty. Between 1846 and 1911, four states banned the practice. For the 46 years following Minnesota’s 1911 repeal of capital punishment, no other states followed suit. Between 1957 and 1965, five additional states abolished the death penalty. During the 1970s and early 1980s, four more states followed suit. In 2007, both New Jersey and New York prohibited the death penalty. Nine states abolished the death penalty between 2007 and 2020. In August 2016, the Delaware Supreme Court struck down the death penalty as unconstitutional. In March 2020, the Colorado State Legislature passed and Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed a bill repealing the state’s death penalty.[2] A year later, the Virginia State Legislature passed and Gov. Ralph Northam (D) signed a bill repealing the state’s death penalty, making Virginia the first southern state to do so.[3]“
Obviously, any person who says there is no difference between Republicans and Dems when it comes to the death penalty is simply revealing that their concern for innocent people being executed because they are in jail in Republican-controlled states is just a talking point. It has as much truth as her lie that Putin had to bomb Ukraine families to protect the country from Nazis.
Facts. Stubborn things.
Now she’s claiming that it is fact that Democrats are worse for immigrants than Republicans!

Nearly every state with Democratic Governors have abolished the death penalty while Republican Governors are still executing innocent people.
Therefore, every person who says they don’t care if a Democrat or Republican wins because there is “no difference” simply doesn’t care about the execution of innocent people.
If they did, they would desperately want to get rid of Republican rule.

I do not approve of the death penalty as it INEVITABLY leads to the wrongful execution of innocent persons. In this case, however, the evidence against the defendant was strong–blood, possession of the victim’s jacket and purse, possession of the victim’s husband’s laptop. This sentence should have been commuted (and all should) to life without parole.
My ex-wife used to work as a psychologist in a supermax for men. They were all, almost to a person, entirely innocent of any crimes. ROFL.

Dienne, I just read the Missouri Supreme Court’s decision from Monday denying the motion for a stay of the execution. It includes some background that shows the prosecutor’s office withdrew its argument that Williams was innocent of the murder.
In short: the prosecutor initially argued that Williams’ possible innocence was one of several grounds for staying the execution. That argument appears to have been based on the idea that DNA evidence would show that there was DNA on the murder weapon that most likely came from the actual murderer. The DNA testing came back and showed the DNA was likely from a county investigator and the trial prosecutor, not another possible perpetrator. Based on that new DNA report, the prosecutor abandoned the “actual innocence” argument.
I have no idea why the press has continued to report that the prosecutor (who was not the original prosecutor on the case) says Williams was innocent. Really terrible reporting.

I’m old enough to remember when the Supreme Court struck down the death penalty.
I’m old enough to remember 2016, when some folks who said the Supreme Court doesn’t matter were absolutely unconcerned about Republican rule and somehow they ignored all the people executed.
I remember when this person didn’t even “pretend to care” about marginalized people and what a right wing Supreme Court would do.
Why wouldn’t you post this story as a rant against Republicans? That would make more sense.
If you don’t care whether Trump and the Republicans are empowered, and you don’t care about a right wing judiciary and Supreme Court, then crying false tears because you heard on some neo-fascist Russian-supported news source that no Democrats will stand up and save an innocent man (which not surprisingly is wrong) just confirms your hypocrisy. You don’t care. You just see yet another way to attack Democrats.
It’s like hearing someone who said the Nazi party was no worse than other German parties in 1930s Germany, then scapegoating the Jews for not stopping Hitler.
When you empower a far right judiciary, YOU are responsible for it. Stop blaming other people for the consequences of your choices. It’s not Bernie Sanders’ and AOC’s fault that this guy is being executed. If you want it to stop, VOTE FOR Democrats. If you want it to continue, keep saying you don’t care if Trump wins. You spurned the “good reason” in 2016 when you voted to insure that a Democrat did NOT fill a vacant seat, and made it clear that having Trump appoint right wing Supreme Court justices was not a problem for you. Bye Bye voting rights. Hello Trump immunity.
A right wing Supreme Court wasn’t “reason enough” for you in 2016, so it’s not surprising that you can “find no reason” in 2024 – AFTER Trump inciting an insurrection and overturn an election! AFTER everything Trump is saying about this election.
You sound like one of the not so good Germans:
“As I’ve said a million times, we all know who the Nazis are, which is why I don’t vote for them. I’m looking for a reason to vote for the other party and I can’t find any THAT MATTER TO ME BECAUSE THE THINGS THAT NAZIS DO TO JEWS DO NOT MATTER TO ME. I am not voting to stop the things that Nazis do to other people that don’t matter to me because I am pretending that the smaller ways that both parties are alike is MORE IMPORTANT than the ways that the two parties aren’t alike.”
Every time you profess not to see any difference between Dems and Republicans, you simply reveal your own priorities and who and what you are willing to sacrifice for your priorities. You know full well that there is a huge difference between the parties in their Supreme Court Justice picks, in their view of LGBTQ issues, in protecting voting rights, in race issues, in tax issues, in deporting immigrants, in Medicare and Social Security issues. In expanding health care.
But you desperately nit-pick about some other way in which their policies aren’t as starkly different and declare that there is no difference.
What you are actually saying is that the ways in which they are different DO NOT MATTER TO YOU. The Supreme Court does not matter to you. Appalling speeches full of lies, racism, xenophobia, and hate don’t matter. Disenfranchisement of voters does not matter. Many things that bother us DO NOT MATTER TO YOU.
And that’s really about your own values. Just like the not so good Germans thought Nazis were no different than other German parties because stopping the annihilation of Jewish families – a clear difference – was way down in importance to them.
And the ways that Dems and Republicans are different – protecting democracy versus undermining it; fomenting hate and racism and xenophobia with lies versus trying to bring us together; privatizing Medicare and ending the ACA versus protecting and expanding Medicare and health care; hating immigrants and promising to deport them versus working on legislation to address the problems but also provide a pathway to citizenship – ARE NOT IMPORTANT TO YOU.
The things you claim ARE important never get fleshed out. You would rather have us believe that evil Bernie Sanders and AOC are no different than Republicans because Bernie and AOC haven’t spoken out to stop an execution- ignoring all the OTHER issues they are very different than Republicans.
If you don’t see the real differences between today’s Republican party and the Democrats, then it is you who demonstrates what values are important and what are not.
I won’t keep engaging with you, but when you choose to look the other way at evil – and that is what the Republican party has become – and instead look desperately for some way to claim that Dems are just like Republicans, you sound a lot more like someone trying to rationalize your secret desire to see the Republicans in power. The worse the Republicans have become — and the last few weeks have been even worse than most of us could have dreamed — the more you PRETEND that you can’t see any reason to vote Democrat, any difference.
It just sounds like you are lying now. If you can’t see a difference between Harris/Walz and Trump/Vance, then you are being willfully blind and I doubt you are blind. You no longer sound credible.
Maybe you don’t have trans children. Maybe you don’t have LGBTQ relatives. Maybe none of your family was born in the “wrong” country and will be deported – which Trump has indicated will also happen with some legal immigrants.
Maybe you are like the people who don’t believe Trump really means it, just like those who didn’t mind Hitler being in power professed not to know Hitler “really meant it” to absolve themselves from their obvious guilt. When they said that there was no difference between Hitler and the other political party, they meant that the CLEAR differences – like annihilating Jews – DID NOT MATTER TO THEM.
As long as you own that the differences between Dems and Republicans – differences like racism, voter disenfranchisement, xenophobia, right wing judiciary, white supremacy – DO NOT MATTER TO YOU you are being truthful.
But when you lie and say that differences don’t exist at all, you sound like a troll.
The very stark ways that the Dems and Republicans are different is unimportant to you. Which is frankly, pretty shocking for you to admit on this blog filled with people who can think.

TL;DR, but if Hillary had been elected in 2016 we wouldn’t be having this conversation because she would have gotten us nuked by now with her aggression against Russia. Yah, yah, Russia has been threatening to nuke Ukraine since they invaded Ukraine. No one believes them because if they used nukes, Moscow would be incinerated. We forced Ukraine not to retaliate against the invasion by striking Russian targets. They had to defend themselves with one, maybe two hands, tied behind their backs.
I have previously expressed my anger at RBG for refusing to retire in the middle of Obama’s second term, when he could have nominated a replacement. She was too greedy to do the right thing. I am not a member of her fan club.

Did that person really just scapegoat RBG for what the REPUBLICANS did to the Supreme Court?
Wow, talk about chutzpah. Back in 2016 she claimed there is no reason to vote for Democrat because the Supreme Court doesn’t matter. So why is she scapegoating RBG for NOT stepping down so a Democrat and not a Republican could fill her vacant seat?
There’s no logic to her argument. It is possible to criticize RBG for not stepping down so a Democrat was guaranteed to fill her seat AND also say that RBG’s bad choice made it even MORE urgent to elect a Democrat. But according to this person, there is no difference!
It obviously PROVED that there is a difference between the two parties.
So why would this person criticize RBG for not stepping down so a Democrat was guaranteed to fill her seat AND say that there is no difference between a Democrat and a Republican filling her seat?
Perhaps she is not criticizing RBG since she believes that having Trump fill RBG’s seat IN ADDITION TO Trump filling the vacant seat that was open in the 2016 was no different than a Democrat filling those vacant seats. She has continued to double down on what she said in 2016 about how she didn’t care whether Trump or the Dem filled the vacant seat because there was NO DIFFERENCE.
Perhaps her argument is that we, the stupid people who actually believe that there are important differences between Democrats and Republicans, are hypocrites because we wrongly criticize the blameless Republicans for the Supreme Court instead of doing what this Putin-apologist wants us to do and scapegoating the Jew, RBG for the right wing Supreme Court.
It would not matter when or if a Supreme Court Justice stepped down IF there was no difference between the Republicans and Democrats.
That lie – that it is NOT the Republicans’ fault that we have a far right Supreme Court, it is instead the Jewish Democrat RBG’s fault – is Orwellian propaganda.
The CHOICES that are made by a president to replace justices directly affect the Supreme Court, no matter when those justices retire.
I don’t care if people want to drag RBG’s name through mud for not retiring when a Democrat was GUARANTEED to replace her. That’s fair criticism.
But I do care when people drag her name through mud in order to support a false narrative that the Supreme Court’s far right tilt is NOT the consequence of the far right Republican party being empowered to choose the Justices that Democrats voted against. I care when they imply that Trump’s decisions aren’t the problem, because Dems and Republicans are the same, and it’s all RBG’s fault.
RBG’s grave error PROVED that elections have consequences and that empowering Republicans is very different than empowering Democrats. It proved that empowering Republicans is far more dangerous than RBG realized when she made the mistake of not stepping down.
RBG’s grave error did not prove that there is no difference between Dems and Republicans. It proved that there IS a difference.
This Putin-apologist is lying to us. She knows there is a difference. She wants to scapegoat anyone except the Republicans for all the harm they do, because otherwise she might have to admit to her responsibility in empowering them.
She cannot even admit that the right wing tilt of the Supreme Court has anything to do with the Republican party! Instead she says it’s all RBG’s fault, stop blaming those innocent Republicans, and blame the Jew RBG instead. She says don’t vote for Dems because they are just like Republicans, that’s why RBG is to blame for not allowing a Dem to fill her seat instead of a Republicans. Dems and Republicans are the same, but evil RBG not retiring when a Democrat could replace her is the reason the Supreme Court is far right, and also there is no difference between a Dem or Republican appointing Supreme Court Justices.
Orwellian. Today, RBG is to blame because she should have known how important it is that a Democrat replace her. Tomorrow, there is no difference between a Republican or Democrat president filling a vacant Supreme Court seat.
Republicans are never at fault for their actions – Democrats are to blame for only being able to stop some Republican actions but not all of them. That proves there is no difference, except that it’s always the Dems fault that Republicans do bad things.

Just because YOU don’t care about the harm done to people that Dems speak out for – like Amber Nicole Thurman and the Haitians in Springfield and trans kids and union members and working people and the myriad of other people they speak out for – does not mean that the Dems don’t speak out for them. The Dems also fight for policies to help people like them. You don’t care about them.
I am so sick of you mischaracterizing the vague ways that Dems are like Republicans and being willfully blind to the far more obvious ways that they are extremely different.
In fact, it is YOU who is no different than a Republican – using your own logic. You don’t speak out when Haitian immigrants are demonized, when trans kids are harmed, with abortion rights are destroyed. You don’t speak out when Republicans block minimum wage increases or lie to get white Americans to hate people who aren’t white or Christian. You don’t speak out when Putin annihilates Ukraine families or threatens to use nukes. You have a lot more in common with Republicans than Democrats do.
So of course you won’t vote for Democrats. Like the Republicans, you don’t care about immigrants being demonized, trans kids being harmed, women seeking abortions being tuned away, the Supreme Court blocking any accountability for a corrupt, neo-fascist party. You don’t care about stopping Republicans disenfranchisement of voters who aren’t white. Just like Republicans, you won’t vote for a Democrat.

She then describes Henry’s rude demeanor when they performed the song at the White House.
