Former Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse served briefly as president of the University of Florida–17 months. During that time, he spent lavishly on staff and entertaining. He hired members of his former DC staff at six-figure salaries and allowed them to work remotely. He resigned in July to “spend more time with his family,” but will be paid his salary of $1 million a year until February 2028.
The student newspaper reported another instance of Sasse’s extravagant spending; the story was republished in the Orlando Sentinel. It was written by Garrett Shanley and appeared in Fresh Take Florida, a news service of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications.
GAINESVILLE — The University of Florida’s then-president, Ben Sasse, dished out over $1.3 million on private catering for lavish dinners, football tailgates and extravagant social functions — a figure roughly double the amount spent by his predecessor and one that included a holiday party featuring a $38,610 sushi bar.
At the Dec. 7 holiday party, Sasse hosted about 200 guests who dined on fresh sushi hand-rolled by two dedicated chefs alongside traditional dishes of beef, chicken and sweet desserts. The event, detailed in a newly released list of more than 500 itemized catering expenses obtained under Florida’s public records law, cost $176,816, or roughly $900 per person.
The guest list that night included UF’s top brass and officials with the university’s fundraising foundation, who solicit big checks for education programs from wealthy donors. With a student choir caroling in the background, Sasse personally welcomed guests as they arrived at the old president’s mansion on campus, and later toasted them from two open bars serving unlimited alcohol. The bill for the liquor alone was listed as $7,061.
Sasse’s yuletide soirée was the largest single expenditure — nearly 15% of his total catering spending — until he abruptly resigned in July after 17 months in office. The new details about his outsized catering costs add to disclosures about his office’s multi-million dollar spending on lucrative consulting contracts and high-paid, remote jobs he awarded to Republican former staffers and allies that have generated bipartisan scrutiny and promises of government audits.

Sasse was/is a black hole of college funds. Massive amounts of money disappeared into this black hole with no accounting of how the money was actually spent, his personal piggy bank. Oh wait, that’s an insult to pigs.
And then there’s this: He resigned in July to “spend more time with his family,” but will be paid his salary of $1 million a year until February 2028. end quote
He will be getting $1 million a year for doing absolutely nothing!!!!!!! Bank robbers have more class and honor than this despicable con artist.

The Independent Florida Alligator reported, 7-22-24: Sasse officially steps down from his post July 31 and is set to remain at UF in an advisory role as President Emeritus and will teach classes as a professor in Gainesville. end quote
Will this be a no show job or a once a week job? Will he be marking the papers himself or delegate it to some patsy? One wonders how much he will be paid for this gig?

It’s important to note that the Independent Florida Alligator is a student newspaper. Margaret Sullivan, former ombudsman for WaPo, included them in this post about student journalism:

From all the stories I recall over the last 8 or 9 years (and maybe longer), corruption is a toxic virus that runs deep throughout the leadership of the fascist, Christian Nationalist MAGA cult.
I wonder if anyone has collected all of those news stories in one file.

Sasse is resigning because of his wife’s serious medical problems. Of course, Diane Ravitch has an agenda to push and will not disclose this fact to her readers. And even more appalling: this is the first posting ever on this blog that opposes excessive adminstrative expenses in higher education. Higher Ed and diane Ravitch belong to the same political tribe.

This definitely is NOT the first posting on this blog about runaway administrative costs and bloat in our universities. I know because I have read many pieces that Diane has posted about this topic and many comments by someone who refers to himself as Teaching Economist arguing that the enormous administrative salaries are just market rates. So, you are wrong about this.

Bob,
His reason for resigning in no way excuses his profligate spending. The comparisons to his predecessor demonstrates his excessive spending. The story has been in the Florida press for a week or so and in the national press recently.

I imagine that this position was very difficult to fill because of the tension between state politicians and university faculty. His salary and step down agreement was likely what they had to pay to get him to take the job.

Who else would pay Ben Sasse $1 million a year?

Dr. Ravitch,
He might well be able to make a good living doing something other than being a university president, but my point is that these jobs are all consuming. These are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year jobs. There are no days off, no unofficial moments. Very few people are willing to take on this greediest of jobs, and only a relatively high salary would tempt faculty away from the relative life of leisure that is enjoyed by a full professor or a former US senator.

Most people probably can differentiate between paying a former college president $1 million/year for a now show job, and hiring 10 or more professors, mental health counselors, health care workers, or all the other “wasteful” expenses that you believe should be cut so that taxpayer money can pay a politician with connections to the Governor $1 million a year for a no-show job.
In other words, glad to know that Republicans stand by their policy to have parents’ tuition at their state university pay for a former president/politician to get $1 million a year for a no show job and that’s why their kid had to wait months to get any help at the health center.

Thr president of a public college spending $38K on a sushi bar is worth notice.
Sasse also spent Florida money liberally to hire his former staffers at generous salaries.
No one has questioned,or mocked his wife’s serious health problems.

Sasse’s wife’s medical problems are no excuse for his wild spending. What agenda am I pushing? What agenda is the Orlando Sentinel and the Miami Herald pushing?
