Liz Cheney broke her silence today: she declared before an audience of students at Duke University that she will vote for Kamala Harris.
Former Representative Liz Cheney, the onetime high-ranking Republican from Wyoming who torpedoed her own political career by breaking vociferously with former President Donald J. Trump, on Wednesday told students at a Duke University event that she would be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
“I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Ms. Cheney said. “As a conservative and someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
Ms. Cheney had remained silent until now, despite repeated outreach from the Harris campaign, which has been courting Republican endorsements and voters. Ms. Cheney chose not to speak at the Democratic National Convention, making the decision to wait for a stand-alone moment in September, closer to when early voting was set to begin.
It was a strategic choice to ensure her voice would not be lost in a sea of back-to-back convention speeches, according to three people familiar with her thinking.

We can agree with Liz. Cheney and also agree to disagree with her on some of her thinking, but we cannot agree to disagree with Project 2025, Traitor Trump, and his puppet MAGA cult.
Malignant narcissist Traitor Trump, a convicted rapist, fraud and felon, is the first president in US history to refuse to accept the results of an election even after losing all the recounts and more than 60 court cases, some with judges he’d appointed.
That TRAITOR (in capital letters) with support from members of his fascist MAGA cult, were called to Washington DC by that TRAITOR on January 6, 2021, another first in US history, to attempt a violent coup.
Fortunately for the United States, that coup failed but cost lives. Sadly, only one of the violent traitorous MAGA mob lost her life. More should have, many more, from that fascist deranged mob.
That TRAITOR told his MAGA mob to “fight like hell” and those three words were all the mob had to hear and remember. Anything else the TRAITOR said was an attempt to cover up those three words in case the coup failed.
That TRAITOR must pay for his crimes.
The TRAITORS that supported him must also pay for their crimes. One war or another.

Hello Christine: I’m with that Capitol policeman who was being interviewed the other day and said he could not understand why, after all this time since the Capitol invasion, and after all the people who have been convicted and jailed for their participation in it, . . . why the main perpetrator of it, Trump, is still walking around free. We should ask Merrick Garland and the Jan 6th Committee why they did not operate with a stricter timeline. It’s been four years! Perhaps we would not be in this dismal situation if they had finished their investigation sooner.

Liz Cheney is a true-blue conservative. As you pointed out, she voted consistently with Trump. She broke with Trump because she cares about the Constitution.
Not that it matters, but she is in no way a “neocon.” There are huge differences between conservatives and neocons. I lived that history.

Read The Nation article I just posted. It’s absurd to say she’s not a neocon. She agrees with her father on everything. Are you telling me the architect of the Bush Doctrine is not a neocon? Lol.

Dienne, you don’t know what a neocon is or was. Liz Cheney is a conservative. Do you know the difference? Neocons are liberal on domestic issues ( like abortion and social spending) but hawkish on foreign affairs. Conservatives are not liberal on anything but true conservatives are devoted to the Constitution.

I don’t even know how to argue with you when you insist on being this wrong. Liz Cheney is the devoted daughter of the patron saint of neocons. Until you can show me how Liz departs from her father, your claim that she’s not a neocon is just ludicrous.
Anyway, be wrong if you insist. I won’t argue reality anymore.

This conversation exemplifies so much of what is wrong with the Dem haters. It’s not just that they are ignorant — all of us are ignorant of some things. It’s just they are WILLFULLY ignorant and plug their ears with their fingers and insist they are right. It’s true of Trump voters and those on the left who are more alike than different and who make up reasons to justify their extreme hate.
I’m not particularly educated on this, but I LIVED through it and neocons LEFT the Democratic party because they thought it was too liberal and not interventionist enough on foreign policy.
They joined with conservatives like Dick Cheney in the Republican Party because the conservatives in the Republican party represented their view. They LEFT the Democratic party. That’s why they aren’t called “conservatives”, they are called NEOconservatives.

Anyone who thinks Dick Cheney or Liz Cheney is a neocon doesn’t know the difference between a conservative and a neocon.
Irving Kristol was known as the “”godfather of neoconservatism.” His famous line was “a neoconservative is a liberal who was mugged by reality.”
Dick Cheney, Lynne Cheney, Liz Cheney were conservatives. They were never liberals.
Neoconservatism became a thing in the 1970s. I was there.

If dienne77 has an iota of integrity, she will post here and acknowledge she was wrong about what a neocon is. People who were ALWAYS conservatives are not neocons. Dick Cheney was a hero to neocons because he was ALWAYS a conservative and they were not but went to join him.
Diane, I have the utmost respect for you because you readily acknowledge if you get a fact wrong and correct it. You aren’t interesting in pushing lies to get people to agree with you.
But those anti-Democrats – whether they are Trump Republicans or Putin apologists like dienne77 – do not care whether what they say is true. Once they believe that the 2020 election was “stolen” from Trump, or Putin invaded Ukraine to fight Nazis, or the Dems (with help from Bernie Sanders) secretly have the same right wing corporate agenda as the Republicans, or Dick Cheney is a neocon, nothing will change their mind.
It’s why they are so dangerous. Their extreme certainty that they are always right about everything unfortunately makes their lies more convincing. The right wing media readily gives them a platform and presents them as truth-tellers, while the so-called liberal media presents their views as a valid side in a both sides might be right story. And then they bemoan why people believe lies.
Because the media amplifies only “this thing a Dem-hater says is true” (on right wing media) or “this thing a Republican says may or may not be true but the only people who say it isn’t true are partisan Dems” (on mainstream media).
Reporting what is actually true is considered too biased because the Republicans don’t like it.

there are millions of delusional voters whose belief system includes preposterous ideas they take as fact. Confront them with information that challenges the premises of their beliefs and they will reject proof in the face of their own delusional thought process.
No matter how many people there are like Liz Cheney who tell the truth, these people will believe Trump, lie as he might. Unfortunately, this is cover for all the Republicans who know their party is going away and want to be around to reshape it, using the same votes that Trump did in their own way.

No liberal Democrat would vote for Cheney if she were running against a Democrat. She was running against a MAGA Republican in Wyoming, who crushed her.
Liz Cheney, unlike the rest of the elected Republicans, sacrificed her career by speaking out against Trump and taking a prominent role on the Jan 6 Commission.
Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are profiles in courage.

Dienne, I read the article. Liz Cheney is in every sense of the word a conservative. That’s what makes her standing up to Trump so remarkable. Mitch McConnell didn’t. Neither did any of the grand poobahs of the GOP.
I am sorry that you don’t know what a “neoconservative” is. I do. I lived that history. Neoconservatism became a thing in the 1970s. “The Public Interest” was its journal. It doesn’t exist anymore.

dienne77: In any case, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” That’s not Emerson giving a mandate for relativism or for flipflopping according to the wind, or for hypocrisy, but an acknowledgement (and IN THIS CASE) that people are complex in our knowing and can change our minds when situations change and when we have good reason to do so.
In my view, Cheney had plenty of good reasons to change her mind on the presidency and on Trump, but still to keep her conservative creds.
With Diane, I agree that ignorance is, indeed, just being uninformed. But then there is aggressive ignorance, which (in my view) you (Dienne) are involved in; and that’s when being uninformed begins to morph into delusion.
I met a guy in line up at Walmart who was obviously offended that I was wearing a mask and asked why. I said because covid is still around. Whereupon he waved me off and remarked, “I had covid, it was a nothingburger.”
The conversation (such as it was) got worse when I realized this guy is under the impression that the entire world and everyone in it is defined by his own limited experience of it. He implied that he thought no one really died from covid and, btw, vaccines are a ploy.
I bet he is a MAGA Trumper. CBK
