I hope everyone had the opportunity to watch the Democratic Convention last night. It was exhilarating! I have watched both parties’ conventions ever since they were first televised. I remember back when conventions were contested, when no candidate had enough votes to lock up the nomination beforehand, and there were multiple votes cast to choose the candidate. There were fewer primaries back then, and the candidate was chosen at the convention. Now the convention is a coronation.
This year, though, there was a historic switch at the top on the Democratic side. Biden was determined to stay in the race until he wasn’t. Many of the party’s leaders asked him to step aside because they feared that he would drag down the Democratic Party if he stayed in. He was finally persuaded to do so because he realized that he could not unite the party. So, knowing how important it was to defeat Trump, he agreed to drop out for the good of the nation.
Given that everyone knew for certain the identity of the nominees, the challenge for the Convention planners was how to keep it interesting.
And they did it by showcasing the rising stars of the party, like Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, who is sharp-tongued and witty; Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky, who gets elected and re-elected in a red state; and AOC, who hit it out of the park with a fiery speech. Actually, everyone who spoke was awesome.
Then there were the three young women who talked about how their lives had been changed by harsh abortion bans. The third speaker, from Kentucky, Hadley Duvall, talked about being sexually abused and raped by her stepfather, learning she was pregnant when she was 12. She said, “”[Donald Trump] calls [total abortion bans] a ‘beautiful thing,'” Duvall said. “What is so beautiful about a child having to carry her parent’s child?”” There was silence and a collective gasp in the arena.
Hillary Clinton received a standing ovation that went on and on. And she delivered an eloquent, pointed speech. At one point, the audience broke into chants of “Lock him up!” She didn’t join in, but she smiled.
The highlight of the night was Joe Biden. His introduction by his daughter Ashley was moving. The audience welcome was ecstatic, and the cheers for him continued for several minutes. He was bathed in love and admiration. He spoke honestly, passionately, powerfully about his career, his love of country, his devotion to democracy, and his determination to keep Trump out of the White House. He said his decision to ask Kamala to be his running mate was the best decision of his long career. He said wistfully at the end of his speech that when he was first elected to the Senate at the age of 28, and now he is “too old” to run again.
Biden gave a cleared-eyed and incisive analysis of why this election is consequential. If you were not watching, I urge you to watch it now.

I 💙 Joe Biden. He is a man of honor, who did NOT DISS public schools and public school teachers, both National treasures.

He hired Cardona. . . who is still a believer and part of the standards and testing malpractice regime. Can NOT DISS the students any more than continuing that malpractice regime.

Cardona has not changed anything. He hasn’t even tried.

I agree. I was seriously worried that the Dems were running so behind and Biden was making his speech so late that he was going to be exhausted and make a poor showing. Instead, Biden really proved that the smear of him as a cognitive vegetable was an ugly lie. Biden is old, but his speech, his delivery, his HUMANITY and thoughtfulness was in total contrast to Trump’s insane rambles. Thank you, Joe.
I am still holding my breath because the so-called liberal media is desperate to find a scandal. I suspect that there are the same types of right wing provocateurs among the protesters outside as there were during the BLM protests when cameras caught a right wing neofascist breaking store windows and begging the BLM protesters to joim him in creating havoc. I am surprised there hasn’t been more warnings about those fake protesters urging violence because it’s the playbook used all the time by the Republicans. During the Women’s March in 2017, we saw some hired right wing shill offering lots of money to a progressive group to light fires and cause mayhem.
The media of course seems to have total amnesia about the past, so no doubt if the protests outside become problematic, they will make it a Democrat problem. I hope if that happens, the Kamala/Walz team is smart enough to be taking video of the ones urging violence and their political leanings are revealed. I am guessing they are the Dem-haters on the far right (or the Dem-haters who claim to be leftists but defend Putin). Not the good people who actually care about what happens to the Palestinians.

I have not had the opportunity to watch it. Have the democrats brought up right wing censorship or voiced support for public education?

Biden’s speech focused on Project 2025 and Trump in contrast to his policies and what the Harris administration will do. Biden also mentioned that Trump intends to eliminate the Department of Education. Biden made a terrific speech full of hope and promise.

Project 2025 is right out of the 1700’s.
Should be called Project 1725.

The campaigns begin after the conventions, mobilizing your base, winning over the undecided and most important, getting your voters, or, potential voters to the polls. Hillary lost in the last week (blame Comey). The election is fifty elections, actually in the core states, can your states add up to 270 electoral votes. An archaic anti democratic system, but, our system

Tuned in now and then but I find it impossible to watch these things. One thing I will note is that my god Kathy Hochul was awful.

I have to comment on how impressed I was with and how proud I am of Steve Kerr (I have been a Warriors fan ever since I discovered basketball as a middle schooler in the late sixties). He is an accomplished speaker and not afraid to speak the truth. If you don’t know the story of what happened to his father, do a little research.

Yep, I love Steve Kerr, despite being a fan of another team! I liked him as a player when he could hit the 3s in important games, and then liked him even more decades later when he was one of the few coaches willing to speak out on important issues.
Kerr and Walz (and Ted Lasso!) give coaches a good name, as opposed to the awful coach Tommy Tuberville who really is unqualified for a place on a high school student council, let alone being a US Senator.

It’s hard to say which is the dumbest: Tuberville or Trump.

Sometimes depth of talented players was quite shallow, but that is no excuse. Did they have a good time and want to be out on the field? I hope so.

No matter what I said to that 5 year old who was more interested in the bees buzzing around in the outfield clover, I couldn’t get her to watch the batter.

Duane,
I tried to copy and paste a clip from youtube for you, but failed miserably.
However, if you want a laugh, google:
“Ted Lasso: Roy Coaching Girls Football”
The first video result should be a hilarious 1 minute clip from the Ted Lasso tv series where aging pro soccer player Roy Kent is coaching his young niece’s soccer (football) team.
Love the image of the 5 year old watching the bees in the clover.

From the moment Joe Biden’s daughter began to speak to the end of the president’s speech, it felt like I was experiencing an important part of U.S. history. Magnificent! When the president took the stage and stood firm yet warm during the adulation before he spoke, it felt like a few of the wounds that opened over the past, well, since I can remember at only fifty-something years old, started to heal. Long live the Bidens.
And A.O.C. rocks my socks.
