JD Vance has accused his rival, Tim Walz, of evading combat duty by quitting the National Guard before his unit was deployed to Iraq.
But a man who served under Walz’s command in the same unit told journalists that Walz retired to run for Congress before the unit received orders to deploy to Iraq.
The Hill published the story:
Al Bonnifield, who served 22 years in the Minnesota National Guard, told NewsNation’s Joe Khalil that Walz, like many of the men in their unit, suspected they might be deployed soon but had been given no such official order when he decided to retire.
“He told us that he wanted to run for Congress, and he was in a tough spot, because he was pretty sure we were going to Iraq,” Bonnifield said. “We didn’t have orders. We didn’t have any kind of orders at all.”
Bonnifield added that Walz struggled with the decision, and talked with his fellow service member for 30 to 45 minutes about, “‘What do I do? Where can I be a better person for the soldier? Where can I be a better person for Minnesota? Where can I be a better person for the United States?’…”
Joe Eustice, who served with Walz for years, told The Washington Post he disagreed with the governor’s politics, but Walz did not avoid combat duty and was a good soldier. At the time Walz left the unit, Eustice told the Post there had only been speculation the unit could be deployed.
“When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did?” Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), former President Trump’s running mate, said at the Michigan campaign event. “He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him.”
But Bonnifield vehemently pushed back on the assertion that Walz abandoned his unit, calling it “wrong” and “bulls‑‑‑.”
And after Walz retired, Bonnifield said there was “a little remorse” in the unit, given he had trained many of them across a decade.
“He was our person to go to. He had the answers. He was also a father figure to us. If we had a problem we needed to talk to somebody, he was there.”
It’s ironic that Vance would bring up this topic since Donald Trump was a notorious draft-dodger. When he was eligible for the draft, his father arranged for him to evade the draft by getting a diagnosis of “bone spurs” from a storefront podiatrist in Queens, enabling him to receive five deferments. The podiatrist rented office space from Donald Trump’s Father, Fred Trump. Neither Donald nor his older sons—Don Jr. and Eric—ever wore their country’s uniform.

Everyone should tread lightly on the issue of having served or not served in the military. The United States only needs a very small percentage of its military-age population to serve in order to fill the enlisted and officer ranks in all the branches of the military. We are in no danger of being invaded by any foreign military because of both modern military technology and the two vast oceans on our east and west coasts. That’s a very different situation than in, say, Israel where almost all young people – men and women – serve in the IDF to protect their country from hostile forces on all their borders and beyond. How about we just commend both Walz and Vance for their service and leave it at that?

Vance tried create a scandal by smearing Walz’s integrity regarding deployment to Iraq. Walz has not impugned Vance in the same way. Right wing media with the “stolen valor” theme is everywhere. Meanwhile. Vote Vets endorsed Harris and Walz.

The hypocrisy from the Trump campaign here is as expected. When JD Vance served over seas, for six years mind you, he basically ran copy for Stars and Stripes. This putrid machismo is sad.

Vance served for four years. He never saw combat.
Trump is a draft dodger. His father got a diagnosis of “bone spurs” from a podiatrist who rented a store from him. It was a favor to his landlord. It kept Trump out of the draft. Five deferments.

NYT again doing its’ best to undermine Walz with lies:
Jameson Foser: “BREAKING: The New York Times helps JD Vance Swiftboat Tim Walz. Tell the news media not to privilege Republican lies about Tim Walz’s military service”……
“Predictably, Vance and Trump are already getting a helping hand from the news media, which is privileging their lies.
The New York Times, for example, leads with Vance’s false accusation, not with the truth:
The first seven paragraphs of the New York Times article are devoted to recounting Vance’s false claims — without once even hinting at their falsity. The article portrays this as a problem for Walz instead of for Vance — and thus makes it so.
This is a classic example of privileging the lie, a phrase I developed in 2008 while at Media Matters for America to describe news reports that centers a false claim (rather than centering its falsity) and thus helps the person making the false claim spread their lie instead of holding them accountable for lying.
…..”Reporters “take sides” with everything they do. Everything they do involves a choice, involves a decision that X is more important than Y. When they report a lie five times before reporting the fact that it is false, they are taking the lie’s side.
The question isn’t whether reporters should “take sides” — they can’t possibly avoid taking sides.
The only question is whether they will side with truth or with fiction.
What Trump and Vance and the New York Times are doing is also a textbook example of “Swiftboating.” During the 2004 presidential campaign, Republicans — led by current Donald Trump advisor Chris LaCivita — smeared John Kerry over his service in Vietnam, where he served on Navy swift boats and was awarded three Purple Hearts.1
What JD Vance is doing is as disgusting as politics gets. Privileging his lies, as The New York Times has done, is as disgusting as journalism gets.”

Yes, Joel, Trump prays for bad news so he can pin it on the Democrats.
When the stock market dropped by a huge number last Monday, Trump gleefully called it “the Kamala Crash.” When it partially rebounded the next day, he was silent.

I would be more concerned with how the media handles Trump than what Trump has to say.
The media shapes the opinions of voters.
In 2016 Hillary Clinton was portrayed a insincere at best and a dishonest Politician. She may have been, she was a saint compared to Trump.
The Economy is always the top issue good and bad.
For sometime now, since the spring of 2021 MSM(forget Fox) has portrayed the economy as a disaster. Real(adjusted for Inflation) wages have been up . Real Spending is up . Unemployment was below 4% for the longest period since 1965 (28 months) and is still low. Inflation which was a worldwide phenomenon regardless of the fiscal or monetary policy of different Nations proved to be TRANSITORY because of Covid induced labor shortages , production problems and supply chain issues . While it is down under 3% today. And that is with a distorted housing component that distorts CPI . Near 65.8% of Americans own their own homes. (40% debt free). They are immune to interest rate hikes and their house increasing in value makes their primary asset more valuable not less.
To repeat again. Near 70% of Americans told PEW that they and their local economies are doing okay or well. Yet the same number 70% say the National economy is terrible. Now either their opinions are being shaped by the Media or they are traveling and talking to people more than Studs Terkel .

I’m guessing the GOP smear campaign against Walz will not cause any significant loss of support. That said, any excuse to avoid participating in an illegal, immoral invasion of another country is a good one.

I watched an interview last night with a Republican who retired as a Lt. Colonel after 20 years in the military who was ANGRY about Vance’s accusations of Waltz. This Never Trump Republican also served in the U.S. Senate.
This Never Trump Republican was livid angry and explained what really happened. He also pointed out that after 9/11, Watz signed up for another four years.
AFTER 9/11 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve also read that Vance never saw combat when he was in the Marines. Vance was never in combat. No one ever shot at him. And I read a quote from Vance who said, he was fortunate (or lucky) to have never been in combat.
I spent most of 1966 as a US Marine in combat being shot at.
Here’s what I think of Vance who took the same Oath I did when I joined the US Marines to defend the US constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. We were also the same rank when we got out. We were both E4s.
Vance is a liar and a traitor. I repeat, a TRAITOR!
Watz was an E8, when he retired after 24 years of miltiary service.
“On Aug. 3, 2003, ‘Walz mobilized with the Minnesota National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery … to support Operation Enduring Freedom. The battalion supported security missions at various locations in Europe and Turkey. Governor Walz was stationed at Vicenza, Italy, during his deployment.’ Augé stated. The deployment lasted about eight months.
If Walz’s unit had been sent into Iraq or Afghanistan, he would have willingly gone.
A Master Sergeant is an E8
A Command Sergent Major is an E9
Watz was doing the job of a Command Sergeant Major without the rank while he was completing the requirements to officially earn that rank, but he retired to run for Congress before completing those requirements.
As for the BS about Watz claiming he’d been in combat:
In the 2009 interview for the veterans history project, Walz said he and members of his battalion initially thought they would “shoot artillery in Afghanistan,” as they had trained to do. That didn’t happen, he said, explaining that his group ended up helping with security and training while stationed at an Army base in Vicenza.
“I think in the beginning, many of my troops were disappointed,” Walz said in the interview. “I think they felt a little guilty, many of them, that they weren’t in the fight up front as this was happening.”

Thanks for the facts check with the timeline. “The NYT” should offer an apology to Walz. He left in May, and his unit was deployed in July. It was a difficult decision for him, but there is no clear evidence Walz was trying to avoid combat. “The NYT” is jumping to conclusions.

His unit did not actually leave the US until October. The military had found an adequate replacement for Walz. His men were not abandoned.

Actually according to latest details, October 2005 is when the unit mobilized [reserve units prepare for deployment at a mobilization site within the US]. They didn’t deploy to Iraq until March 2006.

Whether Vance this, or Walz that, is one thing or an other, Harris power is on display right now. Harris is in the chamber of power, right now. Rump isn’t holding her back, or stopping her solutions, from being enacted. Vance isn’t holding Harris solutions at bay. Who is stopping Harris from enacting her solutions, RIGHT NOW? Joe could mouth Harris solutions as his own. Why would any of the claimed supporters object? Who could enforce “Not Yet”, she hasn’t placed her hand on the Book? If she’s the “One”, can she be put on hold?

This is all good background that fills in skeleton timeline I’d learned from various articles a couple of days ago – confirmed in more detail late today in a WaPo article (8/9) “Assessing Claims About Tim Walz’s Military Service.”
To recap:
April 1981 – Walz joins Natl Guard [Nebraska] 17yo
1996 – Walz transfers to MN National Guard (artillery unit of 125th Batt)
Feb 2005 – Walz files application to run for Congress.
March 2005 – Natl Guard issues notice there will be a partial mobilization of MN Natl Guard for deployment to Iraq sometime within the next two years. Walz’s campaign issues press release stating he does not know whether his artillery unit will be included, but has no plans to withdraw from campaign.
mid-May 2005 – Walz’s last day in Natl Guard; he had put in retirement papers at some earlier unspecified point. [Clearly from Diane’s posted article and others, since March he consulted fellow guardsmen, family, campaign staffers before taking this decision.] 41yo, with young children.
July 2005 – Natl Guard advises which units will be mobilized
October 2005 – mobilization [preparation for deployment at a mobilization center in the US]
March 2006 – deployment to Iraq
Nov 2006 – Walz elected to Congress
Oct 2007 – Walz’s unit (which was retained longer in Iraq than originally scheduled) returns to US.
And as Lloyd & other sources report, the so-called “misrepresentation of rank” was actually difference between his latest promotion (served for about 2 yrs) and his retirement rank (which reverts to the previous rank unless new rank served for 3 yrs).

Thanks for outlining the details. There is nothing in the details other than the fact Walz decided to run for congress. They do not suggest Walz was trying to avoid combat.
