Dean Obeidallah blogs at “The Dean’s Report.” Here he describes Kamala Harris’s secret weapon. She terrifies Donald Trump. Can’t wait to see them debate. Trump will probably cancel.
Nothing triggers Donald Trump (and MAGA) more than strong Black women. Period. Black women are at the intersection of the racism and sexism that so fuels Trump and his MAGA movement.
We’ve seen this for years with Trump’s demonization of visible Black female leaders from repeatedly calling Rep. Maxine Waters “low IQ” to vile attacks on Rep. Ilhan Omar including calling for her to “go back” to where she came from and worse. And in 2020, after Kamala Harris was named Joe Biden’s running mate, Trump lashed out by playing on the angry Black women trope by calling her a “mad woman,” “so angry” and even a “monster.”
But now with President Biden stepping aside and the Democratic party rallying around Harris, Trump will for be the first time called to go head-to-head with Harris—and he must be petrified. Harris is the manifestation of all that scares Trump: She is a powerful, successful, smart Black woman.
Harris is also a former prosecutor who was elected in 2004 as District Attorney for San Francisco and in 2010 she was victorious statewide when she won the race to be Attorney General for the State of California. The contrast between prosecutor Harris and convicted felon Trump is perfect. And Harris has been the administration’s point person on reproductive freedom, which again is a powerful contrast to Trump who has bragged, “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade.”
Trump knows Harris could beat him. We all saw how Trump’s frail ego reacted when Biden beat him in 2020—he attempted a coup and incited the Jan 6 terrorist attack. The prospect of now losing to a Black woman has to shake Trump to the core—as does the prospect of ending up in prison.
That means we can expect Trump, his right-wing allies in Congress and the media to smear Harris non-stop with lies and bigotry. Mika Brzezinski shared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday that, “I’ve heard from inside Republican circles and right-wing media that the hate campaign against Kamala Harris has begun.”
In reality, though, the racist right wing smears of Harris began two weeks ago when GOP member of Congress Chip Roy, former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka and a NY Post columnist Charles Gasparino all labeled Harris a “DEI” hire meaning she only got her job because of diversity mandates, not because she earned it. Gorka—while on national TV–even despicably referred to Harris as “colored.”
Gasparino went even further to say if Biden ended up stepping down as President, then, “Harris becomes the nation’s first DEI president by default.”
To the white right, it doesn’t matter that Harris has been a public servant for more than 20 years, winning election after election from DA, to California AG to the US Senate, where she distinguished herself with her service on the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence Committees. And of course, winning the 2020 election as VP.
Let’s be clear: Calling a person of color a DEI hire is what racism looks like. It springs from the white supremacist myth that people of color are inherently inferior to white people, hence, we can only achieve success and visible positions with the help of a program. (I was called a “quota hire” years ago on social media by a Fox News frequent guest because at the time I was the first Muslim hired to host a national radio show.)
When these people say “DEI hire,” in reality they are speaking in coded language to other bigots as the Mayor of Baltimore, Brandon Scott, who is Black, explained earlier this year. Scott, who some on the right have called a “DEI hire,” declared, “We know what these folks really want to say when they say DEI mayor,” adding bluntly, “They really want to say the N-word.” Mayor Johnson later gloriously trolled the bigots, saying on MSNBC that “DEI,” actually means “duly elected incumbent.”
The vitriol and bigotry that will be directed at Harris over the next 100 plus days until the Nov 5 election will likely far eclipse what we’ve seen to date. It will likely be worse than what was directed at Barack Obama given Harris is a woman.
These expected smears are designed to both delegitimize Harris as well as excite Trump’s bigoted, primarily white base. As Brittney Cooper, a professor at Rutgers University, said in 2020 in response to Trump’s calling Harris “angry,” “nasty” and a “monster,” these attacks are intended to undermine Harris as a leader and as a person. Cooper explained, “White supremacy is lazy and unoriginal and doesn’t feel the need to ascribe humanity to Black women.”
And Kelly Dittmar, with the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, in 2020 addressed the politics of Trump’s smears of Harris, saying, Trump is “speaking to a contingent of voters, particularly white male voters, who support him and who are key to his base.” She added, “We know from multiple studies done on the last election that their levels of both sexism and racial resentment were actually pretty strong indicators of their support for Trump.”
Trump never made a person a bigot. He only emboldens bigots to feel comfortable being the worst version of themselves. That means we can expect to see an ugliness over the next 100 days that will be revolting.
But we have the power to win this election. And by doing so, these right-wing bigots now calling Harris a “DEI hire” and other racist names–come January 20, 2025– will be forced to watch America call her, “Madame President.”
Cadet Bone Spurs will not debate her. She is a former prosecutor. She is tough as nails. She would call him out on his bullshit in no uncertain terms every time. Nothing would escape her. Trump has to be terrified OF THAT. He is, like a lot of authoritarian kooks, fundamentally a coward.
The other candidate who could do this–who is smart enough and tough enough–is Buttigieg; that’s why, if Kamala doesn’t choose Whitmer, I would like to see him as her running mate. He is also an ex-military guy, and he will make marshmallow fluff of puffer boy. Whitmer, Buttigieg–I would be happy with either choice, though I would really like to see Buttigieg land Secretary of State.
There is significant evidence that the Republican claim of Harris as a “DEI” candidate is going to backfire. Should Buttigieg be the running mate, MAGA blowhards will lose it.
Buttigieg outranks Vance. He was an intelligence officer with the rank of lieutenant in the Navy and served seven months in Afghanistan in 2014.
The US Marines is a branch of the US Navy.
Vance reached the rank of Corporal, an E4. The same rank I held when I was honorably discharged from the US Marines in 1968.
Buttigieg served in the US Navy from 2009 to 2017.
Vance served in the US Marines from 2003 to 2007. Vance is quoted as saying he was “lucky to escape any real fighting.”
If you go to this Wiki piece about Buttigieg, you may learn more about his military career beats Vance by a ton or more.
“While there, Buttigieg was part of a unit assigned to identify and disrupt terrorist finance networks. Part of this was done at Bagram Air Base, but he was also an armed driver for his commander on more than 100 trips into Kabul. Buttigieg has jokingly referred to his role as an armed driver as “military Uber“, because he had to watch out for ambushes and explosive devices along the roads and ensure that the vehicle was guarded. Also, while deployed in Afghanistan, Buttigieg was assigned to the Afghan Threat Finance Cell, a counterterrorism unit that targeted Taliban insurgency financing. Buttigieg was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and he left the U.S. Navy Reserve in 2017
Those numbers you just gave, Donnie, about the economy during your term in office were a lie. Pulled them out of your tush, some people might colorfully say. You just made them up because that’s what you do. You spread self-serving fantasies with no connection to reality. But I encourage everyone here, when this debate is done, to look up the actual figures. Go look for yourself. He’s a liar. If his mouth is open, he’s eating a cheeseburger or a lie is coming out.
The Sexual Smears are beyond belief. BUT she survived those in California so her luminous force field is already on High Alert. The more they attempt to trash her sexuality the worse they look. Perhaps an entire cadre of very smart sharp-tongued quick draw Dems could be used to beat back these maggots. They don’t have to be the VP. Just pumped to go on the Offense & Defense as needed.
I think you are correct. There is one consideration for democratic candidates that Republicans do not have to consider. Democrats have to be more than sharp-tongued; they have to consider the presentation of logical, cogent ideas. They cannot become simplistic purveyors of dog whistles and racist tropes and keep the party together. Sharp-tongued rebuke is only policy if your constituents are all on board.
I lived in North Carolina during the height of Jesse Helms’ ugliness and bigotry. In 1984, the very popular Democratic Governor Jim Hunt decided to take Helms on. That election became among the ugliest I have witnessed. Democrats thought giving Helms some of his own medicine would bring him down. Helms won quite easily. Later, Harvey Gantt, the very popular African American Mayor of Charlotte, first Black to enter Clemson in the 1960s, lost a close election to Helms whose campaign sent letters to Black voters claiming they could be breaking the law if they voted. Helms is in some ways the Godfather of MAGA politics. I am excited by a ticket with Harris at the top, but already some pundits are getting cold feet worried about the bigoted blows that have been so effective in elections past. She will have to be tough, but will need to avoid the exaggerations deployed by Republicans. The double standard implemented by the press will in those cases make the assault on Biden’s age look tame. The next 100 or so days will be difficult for the American electorate. Trump and MAGA no longer employ dog whistles, but bull horns and threats that seem to keep Democrats off balance. Harris will have to have a credible proposal on immigration to counter this assault along with Democratic talking points on housing, health care, abortion, and education. I hope she simply takes on Trump’s criminality by saying “While you were pardoning felons, I was putting criminals in jail.” This campaign season will be ugly, and should Harris win, the interim up to the inauguration could make January 6, 2021 look like child’s play. Buckle up those seat belts, we’re in for a rough ride.
I moved back home to Tennessee after 5 years in North Carolina August of 1984 in the middle of that campaign. TV was full of ads featuring Helms’ saying things like “I opposed Marxists in Nicaragua. Where do you stand, Jim (Hunt)?
I kept my registration in NC for the fall so I could vote against Helms. He had been a right wing radio personality morphed into a political force that would become the tea party when, in the absence of communism, conservatives invented another list of bugbears. While I agree that Helms could be the immediate godfather of modern fear politics, it’s origin is closer to Martin Dies and the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Republicans outraged by the New Deal set up this committee to fight against its legislation by appealing to fear of Bolshevism.
Helms just put brutal negative campaigning into practice in what was perceived as what we now call a purple state (North Carolina is now the victim of a red coup). My dad used to ask since Helms was not a millionaire when entered the Senate, how did he become so rich while receiving his $150,000 per year pay check? I think McConnell took numerous lessons from Helms without being too obvious. Helms was an embarrassment to most in North Carolina. He didn’t use dog whistles he deployed bull horns for the worst in the South.
Years ago, on a trip to Washington, my daughter visited Helms’s office. She was shocked that the people working in the office were all young women wearing miniskirts. Strange but true. Helms, that racist fossil.
We get free ABC broadcasts from Scranton, PA beamed over the air to our house/mountain redoubt by way of a taken-from-the-trash TV.
And, how fitting since that’s what so many of the political ads are like…TRASH.
Of course, Scranton/Lackawanna County is one of the ground zeroes in the handful of 2024 “battleground states”. Hence the barrage of ads we will endure whenever I check the weather forecast.
Already the G.O.P.’s hate machine is fully revved up, its huge engine smelling like burnt feces and the ashes of American flags. (Wilco reference, there!)
There was a nasty ad on last night tarring Kamala with the Biden brush. Hmmm, that’s a stretch.
I am willfully limiting my exposure to this sort of dreck. But I’d just walked in from a government meeting I attended and the TV was doing it’s TV thing.
A good reason to leave the room and finally go clean the garage.
It is a relief for you to be having coffee in lieu of cleaning. People who clean need to consider the damage this does to the fragile egos of we the utterly dirty. Us the dirty. Whichever.
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot had a huge impact on me, FLERP!…the songs and just the timing of when I’ve listened to them in my life.
During that first pandemic summer, I don’t remember there being any shortage of beer. I would stay up real late and play very loud music hooking up an amp out in the garage. (One of the advantages of living in the country is no noise ordinances and lots of open space.) I try to listen to music like that at least a couple times each summer still. I just had Wilco on last week.
I wish I could cover…ANYTHING, ha, ha. I so envy people who can play an instrument or sing. That and speak a second language. But it takes years to learn those things right and time is zipping by now.
One of the worst things about living in New York City is not being able to do what you can do. I’m lucky in that I don’t have any neighbors directly above or next to my home office, which doubles as my amp room and recording studio. So I can play louder than I otherwise could. But even so I could never blast my Deluxe Reverb above 3 or 4. So I rely on an elaborate system that involves an attenuator running to monitor speakers. It works really well but my I would absolutely LOVE to blast an amp on 10 in the garage in the country!
With Joe stepping aside and the party rallying around Harris, what’s stopping Kamala from enacting meaningful changes, RIGHT NOW? Joe could “Mouth” Kamala policies, as if they were his own, RIGHT NOW. Joe could give Kamala the reins RIGHT NOW. A hand on the “book”, eluding the separation between church and state, (swearing in), won’t magically give Kamala more power than Joe could give her RIGHT NOW. Why wait Joe?
Thank you for this post, Diane, and to Dean Obeidallah for writing it. I’ve already been seeing and hearing ugly sexist and racist slurs against Harris, and I’ve been demoralized and frightened anticipating the avalanche to come. Now I see that our job is to stand up bravely beside Harris and call out every slur, name it for what it is, and make the bigotry work against the bigots. We need to appeal to the basic decency of most Americans.
