Jay Kuo reacts to the failed assassination attempt and the likely political fallout.
I want to discuss what we know so far about the shooter, what the response from officials from both parties have been, and a Trump bump in the polls. My view is that bump is likely to be temporary and will be mixed in with his expected convention bounce. I don’t think that we are “screwed” by this, as some in my circles have lamented, because Trump is now some kind of martyr. On the contrary, I expect that Trump, being Trump, more likely than not will overplay his hand and squander whatever goodwill he might have gained from it.
Let’s walk through this together.
What we know already about the shooter
When it was clear that the shooter was dead and the immediate danger had passed, my first thought was, “Please don’t let it be a minority / immigrant / trans person.” We know how that would be milked by the right.
Instead, it appears the shooter fit a familiar profile: A young white male armed with an AR-15 style semiautomatic assault rifle. His name was Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20 years old, and he was from a town 40 miles from the rally called Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
He was also apparently a gun aficionado, as evidenced by the T-shirt he was wearing featuring the “Demolition Ranch” logo. According to writer Robert Evans, that brand is “probably the largest / most monetized gun YouTube media empire.”

And, given this profile, it was not really a surprise to learn that Crooks was also a registered Republican and had voted in the 2022 primary.

But just to confuse things a bit, eight months before he registered as a Republican, Crooks also appears to have donated $15 to a progressive liberal GOTV group, back when he was still 17. But he did so on the day of Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021, so who knows what he was thinking.
We have yet to hear from his family as to any possible motive or circumstance.
Given this profile, it will be difficult for Republicans to make the case that a crazed leftist tried to take out their presidential candidate. Crooks was a registered Republican with an assault rifle.
But wait! Why on earth would a radicalized Republican want to assassinate Trump? That makes zero sense, right? It turns out that the idea that a Trump assassination would be somehow beneficial for the right was actually advanced publicly five months ago, according to right-wing watch group Patriot Takes. On Infowars, Alex Jones and a guest spoke openlyabout how a Trump assassination would be “so much better for us and so much worse for them” because it would lead to retaliatory in-kind assassinations of a “deep state” list that included President Joe Biden. It’s just the kind of insane idea that a young and troubled zealot might attempt.
We may not ever know what motivated Crooks to shoot at Trump. But agitators on the fringe right should not be ruled out. And in any event, we should be renewing calls for banning AR-15 style semiautomatic rifles, requiring background checks and waiting periods, and imposing an age limit of 21 on all purchases. Perhaps Democrats should reintroduce legislation to do all that, call it the “Trump Assault Ban,” and force the GOP to vote against or filibuster it.
What officials are saying
There is a stark contrast between how high level Democratic officials and GOP officials are messaging around the attack. Democratic leaders have universally condemned the action and called for unity, while many in the GOP have sought to exploit the moment for politics and even leveled baseless accusations against Joe Biden.
But unity was far from the minds of many in the GOP. Top VP top contender JD Vance posted, without evidence or basis,
Today is not just some isolated incident.
The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.
That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.
It is the height of irony to claim that Biden campaign rhetoric, which has never called for violence, somehow led to an attack, when Trump himself has engaged in non-stop attacks upon his perceived enemies that have led directly to death threats, doxxing, and even judicial gag orders to put a stop to it.
Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) took things even further, calling for the Butler County, PA prosecutor to charge Joe Biden with inciting an assassination. He also claimed, without basis and to inflame his followers, that Joe Biden “sent the orders” for the attack.
Many commentators have already contrasted Biden’s grace and calls for unity to Trump’s callous mocking of the brutal attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband and his open questioning of the attempted kidnapping of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as a “fake deal” at the CPAC gathering in 2022. Among independents and undecided voters, this could become a point of comparison and contrast on the question of character, which voters value as highly as honesty and strength. As the threat of chaos and violence grows, there is a strong case to be made that Biden is the candidate who will turn down the national temperature, while Trump will ignite bloodshed. Voters who are sick of political warfare may see that the Democratic ticket offers the only way out of it.
The dreaded Trump bump
Another popular hot take is that the election will now swing irrevocably to Trump as a martyr and survivor of an assassination attempt. Historically speaking, however, the aftermath of unsuccessful assassination attempts is a mixed bag for candidates…
I suspect that the race will remain essentially tied once the news cycle moves on. After all, it would be different if Trump had never played the “victim” and “martyr” cards before. But he has been singing that tune for some time, and those who already see him as a hero for enduring attacks were already baked into the numbers. It’s quite possible Trump doesn’t gain a whole lot more as a “victim” today.
I also suspect that Trump and the GOP will overplay this for sympathy. Already, they are trying to raise money on the news, selling digital collector cards showing Trump with his fist raised high after the attack. That may work with his hardcore base, but among people who don’t like either candidate—the so-called double doubters—it might come off as highly inauthentic and crass….
For the record, Trump remains an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped. We can’t stop saying it in response to bad faith GOP claims that we are actually the ones stoking violence. That is basic Republican gaslighting, and we should pay it no heed.
So, yes, we will stop Trump. But we will do it with ballots, not bullets.

Excellent summation by Jay Kuo. I sincerely hope he is right that the attempted assassination will not generate that much support or added votes for Trump. But the GOP and Trump will milk the near death experience for all that it is worth 24/7. What the heck is next in this crazy campaign season 2024?

A few things I thought:
The shooter was a 20 year old white male registered Republican armed with a gun. How is it relevant that age 17 – before he was even old enough to vote – he gave a $15 donation to a group? When the shooter was old enough to register, he chose to register as a Republican. It’s the media grasping at straws to give equal weight to the idea that he might be a Democrat.
If Biden had been shot, and his first words were asking someone to put his shoes on (?) the narrative would be that it was another sign of his dementia. What’s the deal with Trump wanting his shoes, and his shoes being foremost in his mind during a crisis like that.
Imagine at 3am, Trump is called to an emergency, and his first thoughts are about his shoes.
His second thoughts are NOT what normal people do. There was just a burst of gunfire! “Is anyone hurt? Are all the people around me safe? Are the Secret Service folks surrounding me safe?
Instead, Trump second thoughts are “I am okay that that’s what matters. Hello my cultists, I want you to know your god is okay and that is what matters.”
This man is utterly incapable of thinking about anyone but himself. The NYT presents his sticking up his first as if is it ADMIRABLE. It is the most narcissist thing I have seen. Trump’s first thoughts were NOT that people might have died. Or been hurt. It was “I am safe, and that’s what matters”. If Biden had done something like that there would already be 30 articles in the NYT calling him unfit to lead.
I can’t stop thinking about Steven King’s novel “The Dead Zone” and the politician in it, played by Martin Sheen. Trump’s abnormal reaction, thinking ONLY of himself, makes him unfit to be president. If Biden had done it, it wouldn’t considered a brilliant act of someone who understands how to take advantage of the moment. It would be considered the act of a man who is completely incapable of thinking of anyone but himself.
The firefighter who was killed dove on his family to protect them. Trump had people who dove to protect him, and he could only think of his shoes, and then how to make a good photo op. Did other people die? Was everyone safe? Trump thought about his shoes, and a photo op, because whether HE was safe is the only thing that mattered to him.

If you are out in public, and your shoes come off for some reason (you stumble, for example), then among your immediate thoughts is likely to be getting your shoes back on. Why on earth to you think this odd?
LikeLike
Why on earth would you equate stumbling in public with being shot at as bullets go flying into a crowd?
Even the children and teens coming out of a school shooting where no one dies seem to understand the gravity of the situation. They aren’t celebrating that they were only mildly injured – they are shocked that such a thing happened where some of their friends might be hurt – even if they don’t yet know if anyone died. They may run to their parents, but they don’t fist pump a few times and say “fight!” “fight!” to celebrate that they weren’t hurt when a hail of bullets went flying in their school.
It’s unseemly, but let’s agree to disagree.

Trump is a showman. He acted on his unshod feet. This is entirely in character, and it’s just what he needed to do to play to his base. What surprises me is that he had it together enough to think to do this in the moment. His reaction certainly was red meat for his base. They can’t get enough of it. But there is no making this out to be some sort of Trump campaign conspiracy.
LikeLike
Bob, I don’t know why you see conspiracy theories everywhere. There is no conspiracy here.
Trump acted according to his nature. Just like the teachers in Sandy Hook did.
Trump thought first about his shoes, and then thought people would think a couple fist pumps and a “fight fight” would be appropriate because he survived, and he couldn’t spare a thought for those who did not.
Imagine if, after the cops told them the danger was over, the teachers were fist pumping and yelling “fight fight” to the waiting crowds as they walked out of the school.
Imagine Ariane Grande – after being told that the terrorists were caught – came out to fist pump a few times and yell “fight fight”.
I don’t know why people think it was great that Trump did it. It’s brainwashing. It is like Dukakis in the tank – out of context, with all the media laughing and laughing, Dukakis’ actions make him look like a “loser”. Out of context, with all the media fawning and admiring, Trump looks like a hero.
If you saw a Sandy Hook teacher fist pumping because they had survived a shooting where others were killed, I think you’d be as appalled as I was. That’s not what survivors do – pump their fist immediately because they survived while others around them are bleeding. They give thanks and are humble. They don’t act like they are special and that’s why they were safe while others weren’t.

“How would he know that others had been shot?”
A bunch of shots are fired it a crowded rally and one person with a minor wound starts pumping their fist and yelling “fight fight”.
It doesn’t matter if they “know” that someone got shot. They “know” they were just in a serious, life-threatening situation. What kind of narcissist acts like no one could have been shot because he doesn’t yet know if one of the bullets that didn’t hit him hit someone else.
Am I supposed to think that it would have been okay for a Sandy Hook teacher leaving the school who just knew that shots had been fired but not if anyone was hit to fist pump to the crowd as he leaves and yell “fight, fight”?
That is NOT appropriate, period. It doesn’t matter if you know the bullets hit another person, too, or if everyone else got lucky. Who thinks, after such a moment, “I will pump my fists”?
Teens in school shootings have 100x more empathy than Trump. He is less than human and people do not matter except if they can be used to further what he wants.
The reason that Trump is the first person to come up with that supposedly brilliant and admirable idea to pump his fists and yell “fight fight” is because in all the mass shootings in America, he is the first to be unable to think of anyone but himself and also know that folks will fall in line no matter how self-aggrandizing he is.
A 20 year old shooter was already dead. “Fight fight” yells Trump. Imagine the Sandy Hook teachers pumping their fists and yelling “fight fight” immediately after they were told Adam Lanza was dead, but before they knew if he hurt anyone.

SHOOTER WAS A STAUNCH CONSERVATIVE
The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper has interviewed friends of Trump’s would-be assassin and those who knew the shooter say that he was a political conservative. At the time he shot Trump, the shooter was wearing a T-shirt promoting “The Demolition Ranch”, which is a YouTube channel for gun enthusiasts. He was armed with an AR-type semi automatic rifle.
The shooter, identified by law enforcement as 20-year old Thomas Crooks, of Bethel Park, nearby to the site of the Trump rally. According to new reports, the shooter was a registered Republican; his father is a Libertarian, and his mother a Democrat.
“He definitely was conservative,” the newspaper quotes Max R. Smith who took History classes with the shooter. “It makes me wonder why he could carry out an assassination on the conservative candidate.”
Smith remembered that during a political debate in high school when students were told to move to one side of the classroom if they were going to debate on behalf of liberal ideology and to the other if they were conservative, most of the class went to the liberal side, but Crooks stood his ground on the conservative side.
“No matter what, he always stood his ground on the conservative side,” Smith said. “That’s still the picture I have of him — just standing alone on one side while the rest of the class was on the other.”
Law enforcement has not found anything that might give them even a clue to why Crooks tried to assassinate Trump.
