Our river cruise stopped in Linz (think Linzertorte, a busy industrial town, and we went by bus to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart. It is a beautifully preserved city, with a city center that has no autos, only bicycles and carriages. To call it spotlessly clean would be an understatement, although it’s full of tourists like us. Our guide was a charming woman who knew every last detail of “The Sound of Music.” She told us what the movie got right, what it got wrong. For example, when the Trapp family hikes off into the mountains to escape the Nazis, they were heading towards Germany! Oops, wrong direction. And of course, we had to see the beautiful church where Captain Trapp and Maria were “married.” Like so many churches in Austria, overflowing with beautiful ornamentation. We went to a beer garden for lunch, where we had weisswurst and beer. There are no high rises in the center, and the houses all look as though they were painted yesterday.
By the way, higher education is tuition-free in Austria and Germany but students must pass an exam to enroll.

Oh my. Thanks very much for this picture.
Enjoy your river cruise. Wonderful idea.

Speaking of education in Austria…
I just happen to be deep in the middle of reading Margaret Talbot’s New Yorker piece about “The Villa Where a Doctor Experimented on Children” -in Austria. (Oct. 2, 2023)
Talk about “education” being used for horrific, evil purposes. As Talbot puts it, for years children were subjected to “cruel domination” done “within the framework of academic expertise.” And, it wasn’t just the harrowing, day-to-day torture at that one particular Innsbruck villa. We’re talking recent history, too.

“framework of academic expertise”- interesting take on the article, John.
What I read as the dominant theme in the exposé (even the photo of the child who was tortured showed the link to religion) was the role of the Catholic Church. The period of the girl child’s incarceration was 1973. The article makes it clear that one can infer the Church had an obsession with masturbation, female sexuality, etc. Also included is a characterization of the role that Nazi views played for those who were engaged in the torture. And, there’s this gem, the goal of the abusive authoritarians was to create compliant workers.
In every age, in every country, the priest aligns with the despot just as Jefferson warned with prescience.
Readers of this blog need to be concerned about two issues- the influence of the right wing Catholic Church in the US and the avoidance of all coverage about it, including in Ogozalek’s comment.

Ah, “weisswurst and beer” . . . there is no better lunch. (And you misspelled Bier.) I prefer the weissewurst cold, thinly sliced and dressed with a vinaigrette. I am jealous.

The weissewurst was served in a bowl of very hot water. With German sweet mustard. It was delicious. As was the Edelweiss bier.

“Here’s news: the Danube is not blue. It’s green.”
It looks blue here (but this is in Hungary)

The color of the river seems to depend on what’s above it. 🙂
