Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of Mercedes Schneider’s wonderful blog!
I learned about it last night, too late to mark the actual blog birthday.
Mercedes is one of the sharpest, smartest voices of the Resistance to privatization. She is a hero of the Resistance thanks to her incisive, brilliant exposés of “reform” hoaxes.
She is a high school English teacher in Louisiana. She has a Ph.D. in statistics and research methodology. She could have been a professor but she wanted to teach high school students.
I started my blog in April 2012; she started hers in January 2013. We exchanged emails, and we met when I came to speak in Louisiana. We became fast friends. Mercedes has been a regular at annual conferences of the Network for Public Education, where she most recently gave lessons on how to obtain tax forms and other public data about “reform” groups, which sprout like weeds, with new names, lots of money, and the same set of actors.
Mercedes is relentless. While teaching and blogging, she wrote four books over the past decade.
In 2014, her first book was A Chronicle of Echoes: Who’s Who in the Implosion of Public Education, a vivid portrayal of the cast of characters who pursued privatization and teacher-bashing while calling themselves “reformers.” Might as well have called themselves “destroyers,” because that’s what they are.
In 2015, she published Common Core Dilemma: Who Owns Our Schools?, with a foreword by Carol Burris, executive director of the Network for Public Education.
In 2016, she published School Choice: The End of Public Education?, with a foreword by Karen Lewis, the late and much-loved President of the Chicago Teachers Union.
In 2020, she gathered her advice about research and published A Practical Guide to Digital Research: Getting the Facts and Rejecting the Lies.
In her blogday post, she reflected on some positive developments in the past decade
Of course, the fight continues, but allow me to celebrate a few realities:
- Bobby Jindal is no longer governor of Louisiana, and his 2016 presidential ambitions were a flop.
- John White is no longer Louisiana state superintendent. In fact, he is not a superintendent anywhere at all.
- Michelle Rhee is no longer DC school chancellor. She, too, is chancellor of nowhere at all.
- Hanna Skandera is no longer NM school chief. She, too, is school chief of nowhere at all.
- Joel Klein holds no sway over NYC schools. Chief of nowhere.
- Teach for America (TFA) is losing its luster. Though it tries to reinvent itself, the bottom line is that the org depends upon class after class of willing recruits– a well that appears to be hitting bottom.
Yes, the fight continues. But today– today I take a moment to celebrate just a wee bit.
Happy Blogday to me.
I celebrate Mercedes too and happily name her to the honor roll of this blog.
Love you, Mercedes! May you keep on making a difference.
Typo Alert “I started my blog in April 2012; she started hers in January 2023.” A ten year anniversary means she began in 2013.
Oops! Thank you!
It takes a village! :o)
Mercedes rocks!
Thank you, Mercedes.
YES YES YES YES YES
Thank you Diane and Mercedes for all you do in service to the actual real public schools and their teachers!
Off topic but about education from CBS news today: Quote – CAMBRIDGE – Cambridge Public Schools is now the first public school district in New England to establish sacred spaces for students and staff members.
The prayer spaces are accessible throughout the year for those who observe spiritual or religious practices that require regular prayer.
Many school districts allow daily prayer during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, but the district says that as equity and inclusivity are cherished values, prayer spaces should be accessible throughout the year.
“When the Muslim community group came to me, they said ‘we don’t just pray during Ramadan, we like to also adhere to our daily requirements of prayer five times a day,'” said Manuel J. Fernandez, Chief Equity Officer of the Cambridge Public Schools.
Each prayer space also has a prayer rug for those who wish to use them. End quote
What about separation of church and state and this will open the door to all kinds of religious groups and sects to demand prayer time? No one stops you from making silent prayers.
The Christian theocracy uses minority religions to get special accommodations for themselves. They spin the accommodations as rights which builds the opportunity for conservative Christians to exert religious dominance based on their far greater numbers.
The next “right” will be for bigger space, more resources in the school assigned to Christians. The space for a small number of Muslims is inadequate for a large number of Christians. The spin will be that it is not preferential to Christianity, it is just a decision based on numbers.
The most egregious and dangerous decisions delivered thus far by the conservative Catholic SCOTUS majority on behalf of Christianity are Espinosa v Montana and Biel v Catholic school.
All of her books are important and well written. Thank-you Mercedes.
Reblogged this on Crazy Normal – the Classroom Exposé and commented:
“Mercedes Schneider is one of the sharpest, smartest voices of the Resistance to privatization (of K-12 public education). She is a hero of the Resistance thanks to her incisive, brilliant exposés of ‘reform’ hoaxes.”
Ohio is on the brink of losing its way completely losing its way regarding education. Just today a previous candidate for Governor, Jim Renacci (R) has indicated that he is starting a PAC to get more Far Right candidates to run for school boards in order to push vouchers and charters and control curriculum and teachers. I hope Ms. Schneider will continue her reporting and investigating and take a look at Ohio……Its not good……
Susan,
Ohio is in terrible trouble. Join Public Education partners. Contact William Phillis. Only the voters of Ohio can save public education.
“Only the voters of Ohio can save public education.”
I suggest an Orthodox Jewish funeral. That way everyone who loved the dearly departed can each throw a shovel full of dirt on top of the coffin in the grave. I am thankful for William Phillis, but I can’t see a good outcome when I put my political goggles on. Education has not been a deciding issue in any election in Ohio in the two decades of my experience.
Maybe if Democrats made it their issue, they would win.
It worked in Kentucky
Great. Now Kentucky is bypassing Ohio.
Susan-
Until a playbook is developed to successfully fight theocracy (in Ohio, the theocracy is conservative Catholicism practiced by almost all of the top politicians and jurists in the state), there will be no wins for public education.
You will note that media and blog influencers steer clear of the subject of right wing Catholics which guarantees theocracy’s wins.
Renacci said in an interview while running in the 2022 primary for governor that he would be a “faithful Catholic governor.” His running mate was a Christian film producer.
Jefferson warned, in every age, in every country, the priest aligns with the despot.
Media reported that the Kentucky EdChoice V.P. is the associate director of the Kentucky Catholic Conferences. Almost every state has a Catholic Conference created for the sole purpose of influencing politics. A community Catholic newspaper in Indiana gave credit for the initiation and passage of school choice legislation to political conservative Catholics.
Thank you, Diane, for celebrating with me via your post. I so appreciate your support for my writing these past ten years!
Every word is true. You are a star.
YES YES YES
Borrowing from Bob,

When the term the brightest and the best comes up, I think f a company that includes Diane and Mercedes.
