Arizona Republican candidates are running as die-hard supporters of Trump’s Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen. They laugh at the 1/6 Conmisssion and ignore the many Republicans who testified that Trump knew he lost the election but decided to destroy democracy rather than admit he lost.
Is stupidity contagious? Or is it gullibility?
Tens of millions of people have watched the first two Congressional hearings probing the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last year, but several of Arizona’s Republican candidates for governor were not among those viewers.
The GOP candidates largely dismissed the hearings as political theater and wouldn’t answer a question from The Arizona Republic about former President Donald Trump’s role in the riot.
Meanwhile, their Democratic opponents seized on the chance to call out their conservative competitors as complicit in the false claims of election fraud that fueled the violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“I watched the Jan. 6 hearing because right here in Arizona we face dangerous threats from candidates like Kari Lake who continue to spread conspiracy theories and lies to try to undermine our democracy,” Secretary of State and Democratic candidate for governor Katie Hobbs said.
Lake: ‘I think it’s a waste of time’
Lake, a leading Republican candidate and former Fox 10 news anchor, did not respond to questions for this article. During her campaign, Lake has championed the unproven claims the election was corrupt, and that insurrectionists were held without charges or were welcomed into the Capitol by police.
Lake said in an interview on the conservative channel Newsmax that she would not watch the Jan. 6 hearings, which she dismissed as an effort by Democrats, mainstream Republicans and the media to discredit Trump.
“So this is their effort to try to make Donald Trump and his followers go away forever and it’s not going to work,” Lake said in that interview Friday. “This is theater. They’ve obviously been spinning and splicing and taking different video clips, removing the pertinent parts that would put the truth out there and trying to tell a story that spreads their lies. So I’m not going to be watching it. I think it’s a waste of time.”

I live in AZ, and overnight it looks like many Rusty Bowers election signs have been pulled down. I’m no Republican but he’s a hero! The truth will set us free – but around here we’ll have to work harder to set truth free…
Rusty’s heroism is, for me, quite circumscribed by the fact that he says “a tenet of (his) faith” is that “the Constitution is divinely inspired” and that he would still vote for Trump. These are the words of Christian Nationalism, by which we are currently being overtaken.

Of course they ridicule the hearings. To answer propaganda (if that is what you perceive it to be) is the worst tactic possible. Since you cannot argue specific points.—alas, their hero did indeed say they were going down to the capital and stop the steal on national TV—your best bet is to cast aspersions on the process.
So how do their opponents counter this? By hammering away at the fact of lawlessness. Tell the people: these guys are coming for your money and trying to distract you while their hand in in your pocket.
Hey, teachers: Don’t under any circumstances mention race or LGBTQ people, but feel free to lead your kids in a nice prayer to the Christian tribal god.
Kari Lake is either a blithering ignoramus who lives in an alternate universe in which Trump has some kind of credibility or she is a cynical two-faced lying liar who is bereft of any trace of decency or morality. In other words, she’s an amoral black hole of mendacity and GOP propaganda/baloney. If people like her gain power, they will make sure to kill off democracy and fact-based reality. So sad for Arizona and the nation as a whole.
If all that footage proving election theft she claims is being manipulated by the committee is out there, why isn’t the GOP presenting it? When the bizarre Arizona recount proved fruitless, where was all the footage/evidence she infers? If the Dems were so good at stealing an election, why on Earth aren’t they in total control of congress? Trump lost. There was no election fraud on the part of Dems.
If the current instantiation of the Repugnican Party seizes power, then we will be mere months away from an era of storm trooper citizens’ militias, of fearing the knock on the door in the middle of the night, of an established religion, of Mengele and Olderock.
People think it can’t happen here. That’s what people have almost always thought in every country that went precipitously down into a fascist hell. Such people remind me of the ones who thought that the Supreme Court would never overthrow abortion rights. Surely not.
