Harold Meyerson, one of my favorite commentators on current events, says that we should stop calling Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema “moderates.” How can one man and one woman block every proposal that would help improve the lives of millions of Americans, including their constituents? Nor should we use that term to describe the handful of Democrats in the House who are blocking reasonable and popular programs, like lowering drug prices. I note that I allow Meyerson to use a word that is not permitted on this blog…but he wrote it.
He writes:
Memo to Media: Stop Calling Manchin et al. ‘Moderates’ |
Being more swayed by big-money contributions and an anti-mother bias are far better descriptors. |
“Moderates Hinder Efforts to Negotiate Drug Prices,” says a front-page headline in today’s Washington Post. Certain Democrats are indeed blocking those efforts, but is the media right to characterize them as moderates? How much of the fight between the overwhelming majority of both the House and Senate Democratic caucuses and the Manchin-Sinema-Gottheimer-Peters gang can accurately be described as left-vs.-center or liberal-vs.-moderate, which are the autopilot descriptions that the media applies to them? Consider, for instance, that a number of these battles are being waged over policies that would win over swing voters and, indeed, are popular across the political spectrum. In a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll, fully 83 percent of Americans, including 76 percent of Republicans, favored allowing the federal government to negotiate with drug companies to bring down the prescription drug prices for Medicare recipients and people with private insurance. Which is why, on Sunday, 15 House Democrats in frontline districts—genuine moderates—signed a letter to the congressional leaders saying that bringing down drug prices was key to their survival in next year’s midterm elections (and, by extension, to the Democrats’ ability to hold a majority in the next Congress). There are similar majorities in support of other initiatives that the so-called moderates have blocked, like paid sick leave (73 percent in a recent CBS News poll) and extending Medicare coverage to vision and dental care (84 percent in the same poll). So, is “moderate” an accurate characterization of the Manchin Gang? Is it moderation that dictates their stances? Even a cursory look at the campaign contributions to those gang members suggests other factors besides “moderation” are in play. In the House, two of the three Democrats who blocked the relatively comprehensive drug price negotiation provision—California’s Scott Peters and Oregon’s Kurt Schrader—are among the largest recipients of drug company campaign contributions. The nay-saying duo of Schrader and Peters have received a combined $1.5 million in pharma contributions in the course of their congressional careers. The one Democrat who blocked that provision in the Senate, Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema, raised a record $1.1 million from July through September, as her opposition to reducing drug prices became clear. A good chunk came directly from Big Pharma executives, even as a paltry 10 percent came from actual Arizonans. With ratios like that, it would not be a stretch to conclude that Sinema, who’s not up for re-election until 2024, may be more motivated by a high-paying job in a high-paying industry than she is by winning the votes of her constituents, moderate and otherwise, should she seek re-election. We should note that the other Democratic senator from Arizona—former astronaut Mark Kelly—met with fellow moderate Amy Klobuchar and genuine leftists Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren last Thursday to discuss how to get a drug price reduction into the reconciliation bill. Does that make Kelly a liberal and Sinema a moderate? I think not. So, what do we call these non-moderate moderates who for reasons of their own have broken ranks with their fellow Democrats and President Biden? How about OMT Democrats—Only Money Talks Democrats? That works for most of them; I’m not sure it does justice, though, to Joe Manchin, who increasingly seems a character of Dostoevskian perversity. With each passing (or blocking) day, Manchin comes across as a creature of steadily mounting rage against fellow legislators who don’t pay him sufficient obeisance, who fail to recognize that this is really all about him. On one issue—paid family leave—he has positioned himself as the sole but sufficient bulwark against making sure that Americans in need, most particularly mothers of newborns and sick children, must choose between work and parenting. There’s a term for this that is far more accurate than “moderate.” The mot juste for Manchin is “motherfucker.” |
Well, Duh …
TRUE. And Meyerson’s last line sure is right.
I agree. Conversely, if Miles Davis called you that, it was the highest compliment he could give, reserved only for the few.
Diane
A disgusting posting. Calling Manchin a “morherfucker” Is obnoxious and degrades serious political discourse.

In the case of Manchin, mother$$$$$$ is too mild. I would have called him a $#@$%^&&**(ing &&^&&^$#@)((??????#er. But that’s just me. I apologize for my foul language.
Profanity is a sign of a healthy, robust language.
I’m amused by how people are more outraged by a “bad” word at the end of an article than the behavior he has engaged in and displayed to cause needless poverty, suffering and long-term damage to the climate and economy–which will have additional negative heath effects for millions spread out over the next few generations. To take one example, his actions will actually increase costs by needlessly institutionalizing older persons rather than providing humane, compassionate, and relatively cheap home care. I’d say if all the consequence he has to endure is being called a “bad” name on a blog post, he’ll gladly take it, belly laughs gratis.
If profanity is a sign of a healthy, robust language, my high school students are certainly very eloquent! If you are outraged by the word “mother-,” you should walk into a high school. You’ll hear things you’ve never heard in your life!
There are actually entire dialects based on little more than the F word conjugalated in many different ways to serve as the different parts of speech.
Having worked a fair amount in construction , I am well versed in the American English F dialect, but I do my best to avoid using it here (though I still slip into it from time to time)
Some linguists consider the F dialects languages in their own right.
And incidentally, the actual word for profanity proficiency is “effloquence”
Usage example,:
He was very effloquent, exhibiting great effcility with the flanguage.
Both parties have been pushed rightward but the GOP has gone off the rails into a far, far right wing/libertarian/Trumpian hellish cult. Compared to the GOP, the Democrats are moderate but at least, there are some true liberals in the Democratic party like AOC and Bernie. Sinema and Manchin are right wing bought off DINOs, they are out to protect the interests of the rich and the big corporations. By the way, Medicare does cover vision care but not eyeglasses; my cataract surgery and visits to the ophthalmologist ($10 co-pay per visit) were covered by Medicare.
The USA, the only wealthy country without universal health care where the medical/pharmaceutical industrial complex can charge whatever they want without restraint because of people like Sinema and Manchin.
“By the way, Medicare does cover vision care but not eyeglasses; my cataract surgery and visits to the ophthalmologist ($10 co-pay per visit) were covered by Medicare.” and , mine, my retina surgery and laser surgery after the cataract surgery all paid for by Medicare; my teacher friends in MA do not qualify for Medicare so I’m not sure how their insurance plan does for those surgeries. In addition, when I need a dental “Surgeon” it is covered by Medicare but not the usual types of dental care ….Thanks for letting people know. I wish all teachers could be eligible for Medicare (but they aren’t in MA)
The original expansion was for vision, hearing and dental. That was a significant improvement. Dental was cut by the MFs Moderate Fools its Diane’s blog.
The media love to put people in a box by labeling them. Any representative is beholden to certain groups and pressure from constituents. The media that is generally owned by wealthy conservatives routinely call the neoliberal Democrats “moderates.” There is nothing moderate about privatizing the common good and pandering to “Big Money.”
Oh, Diane, I am a faithful reader, a great admirer of your work, please don’t degrade the cause with words that diminish the message.
I understand the anger, the frustration we feel as educators with conversations in the political arena, the lack of respect, the ignorance, the devious protection of profoundly disturbing qualities, yes, yes, yes.
But we must remain steadfast, respectful in our responses, aware constantly of the importance of our cause, our thinking and our words as we try to advance public education, of course, but more, as we seek to advance a consciousness of being human that extends our capacities.
It is not that a particular word is offensive or should be suppressed from usage. No, not at all. It is that we are engaged in difficult and essential discussions of a vital interest in our democracy, education. What should be the content of our curricula and how should we teach that content? You and I both know the importance of words. We must choose words carefully. I think in this instance, you made a careless choice.
I still love you and wish your voice to be heard. Keep on, keep on!

John-
I’m curious if you (after feeling provoked to write to Diane, a defender of public education) expended similar effort to write to a policy influencer, say from DFER or, from one of the state Catholic Conferences who lobby for privatization. I don’t see evidence that the latter follow the discourse norms expected by an educated and honest society.
Manchin and Sinema are simply Democrats, playing their assign roles just like Biden, Harris, Pelosi, Bernie and the Squad are playing theirs. If ever more progressives are elected or Democrats gain more seats, there are plenty more like Coons and Kaine waiting in the wings to play the villain role. It has always worked like that and always will. Until the Democrats have reason to change, anyway, which they won’t so long as the VBNMW crowd will vote for them just because they’re not Republicans.
I call your bluff.
Let’s elect a lot more Democrats and when Democrats have a huge majority in the House, Senate and hold the presidency, let’s see if you are right and they only pass right wing legislation or whether I am right and they pass progressive legislation.
Because you already tried your version of defeating Democrats, electing Trump, making sure the Supreme Court remained far right for decades, keeping Citizens United intact so progressives have a harder time winning elections, and completely empowering Republicans who make it very hard for people likely to support progressives to vote, and it didn’t work.
You told us the way to “give Democrats a reason to change” is to completely empower a fascist Republican party and you were wrong.
I think the way to “give Democrats a reason to change” is to elect Democrats so that they have a huge majority in every body. And history shows I am right.
LBJ and Truman weren’t progressives and according to your theory, progressives should have worked to defeat them and elect Dewey and Goldwater. But it turned out having big democratic majorities in the House and Senate got a lot of good progressive legislation done.
When Truman won in 1948, the Democrats also won 60% of the seats in the House and Democrats had a huge 12 seat majority in the Senate!
When LBJ won in 1964, the Democrats also won 68% of the seats in the House and had an even more huge 30+ seat majority in the Senate!
Biden has a tied Senate and Democrats have fewer than 51% of the seats in the House. So let’s call your bluff and work to give Democrats the majorities they had under Truman and LBJ. You think LBJ could have signed Voting Rights and his Great Society program if he didn’t have a 30 seat majority in the Senate? You think those would have happened if voters listened to you and empowered Goldwater and far right Republicans?
It’s like trickle down economics. No matter how many times trickle down economics has proved to be a failure that hurt many people, there are still some questionable characters who keep ranting that electing Republicans who will vote for trickle down economics policies will make our economy strong.
At some point, you gotta question their integrity. And you gotta question what their real goal is. Clearly people who keep insisting that trickle down economics work do not care about having a good economy, they care about making rich people richer. Clearly people who keep insisting that disempowering Democrats works do not care about having a progressive country, they care about making sure the far right wing controls this country forever.
Calling your bluff. When Democrats have the huge filibuster proof majorities in the Senate and control 60% of the House that LBJ had, let’s see if they have a reason to pass progressive legislation. Because we already tried your idea that defeating Democrats and empowering the far right will make this country more progressive, and it turned out to be just as much of a lie as trickle down economics. But there are still people claiming trickle down works and people still claiming that empowering the far right works and they clearly are being disingenuous as to what their goals are.
So, what do we call these non-moderate moderates ?
How about “Cunning Linguists”?
Polyglots appointed to several key committes

Nobody wants to believe “Joe stold the election”.
NOT JB, of course, JM…
It’s his turn in the rotating villian role.
Can’t be using the parliamentarian again.
The peeps might catch on.
Hey JB, if JM is such a PITA, how come you
keep him on all the key committes???
Didn’t ‘ya notice his 50% plus vote with
rump before you got selected?
“how come you keep him on all the key committes???
Are you yelling at Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders for keeping Manchin happy enough that he didn’t switch parties so that Mitch McConnell was in charge?
I hope you aren’t a teacher, because if you don’t understand that 50 +1 > 50 – 1, then that is not good. Also, if you teach students that US presidents choose committee seats for Senators, that’s also not good.
I agree that you have a right to be angry if you wanted Mitch McConnell to impose his right wing theocracy on the country and you are very angry Biden didn’t force Manchin out of the party so your guy – Mitch McConnell – could do whatever he wanted.
Manchin and Sinema are, like grizzly bears, *maul**derates
Oops, left out an assterisk.
maulderates
Diane didn’t use the naughty word, Harold Meyerson did. In any case, I think the term is wholly justified considering the shenanigans of Manchin and Sinema. I don’t mind that the naughty word appeared on this valuable site, albeit it was in the Meyerson column not from Diane.
Geezus, spell check keeps changing Sinema to Cinema and Manchin to Minchin and not to mention one of my comments was erased by Word Press or maybe by my screwed up computer. Just venting.
Whoops, the comment was not erased after all. Thanks, Diane.
Not to minchin that Manchin is a mansion-dwelling Munchkin.
Damn I been thrown off of Facebook for far less.
But more concerning than what I would like to call Manchin et al, is what the mass media calls them. In fact the whole framing of politics is concerning. We have “Concerned Parents in Virginia ” Concerned about what exactly ? We have a massive defeat in Virginia for a corporate Democrat, Yet the Liberal Governor of NJ just squeaked by, Jersey voters very concerned about Murphy raising taxes on millionaires. The States are the same size and the vote difference was about 5000 votes.
Then of course they draw all sorts of conclusions about what this means. Now as much as I believe in an expansive social state . I don’t believe for a minute that the American people are swayed by Social Programs or infrastructure bills until you threaten to take away something they have had,or the highway above them collapses on their house. Thomas Frank wrote a book on this.
So while Democrats push infrastructure and social spending, Republicans protect your 14 year old daughters from having consensual sex with a trans boy in the school bathroom (Till on the 3rd or 4th occasion it wasn’t), by attacking school boards and other parents. And of course teaching American History and even more so current events is a subversive un American activity.
And we have to stand up for American values !! Like 17 year olds crossing state lines with automatic weapons to kill demonstrators. Or the Marshal service murdering a man who had announced on a radio show he was turning himself in claiming self defense.
The voters in Virginia did not have a massive swing to the fascist right. Eighty five percent of Trump 2020 Voters came to vote . Sixty Six percent of Biden voters came to the polls . Near nobody swung their vote. Good luck hearing that. Instead you will hear about woke-ness and not book burnings with of without the flame. .
In fact, the progressive Democrat Murphy won in NJ and the conservative Democrat speaker who kept trying to thwart Murphy lost.
And the progressive Democrat Murphy’s victory over the Republican in NJ wasn’t a squeaker — it was LARGER than the Republican Youngkin’s victory over the more conservative (albeit rabidly pro-public schools) Democrat McAuliffe in Virginia. No one is saying that the Youngkin’s use of identity politics to appeal to the racism of white voters allowed him to squeak to a victory. But that is exactly why Youngkin won.
I am so sick of hearing people who hate the Democrats getting their right wing narratives amplified while the true narrative is ignored. Democrats – who are fighting for the economic programs that will benefit all people — are NOT the ones who are campaigning on “identity politics”. Republicans are winning by campaigning on identity politics and having the idiots in the media amplify the lie that it is the Democrats doing it so that the white voters who vote Republican can claim that their vote for a Republican spewing racist white supremacist ideology isn’t because those voters are racist. Which is pretty ridiculous and yet someone got a piece in the Atlantic to write just that.
If anyone is campaigning on “identity politics”, it is Republicans. And the fact that they motivated more of their white supporters to come out to the polls by appealing to their racism is disgusting. But even more disgusting is listening to those pushing the right wing narrative lecturing Democrats that they better stop appealing to identity politics and do what Republicans do and start using identify politics to pander to the racist beliefs of white voters.
Sorry, but not buying it.
I think we agree!
But more concerning than what I would like to call Manchin et al, is what the mass media calls them.
Far more concerning. Far more consequential.
Tinkering with the definition of political classification is a journalistic pastime. Time to talk policy instead of personality. It is only because our political leaders are universally helped by their image that we keep turning to personality politics.
Policy may be boring, but it is the important stuff.

Reblogged this on Lloyd Lofthouse and commented:
Manchin and other Democrats that belong to the Corporate Money Gang are all “motherfuckers” and that is the nice descriptive word to describe these bought and paid for undercover corporate moles sent to infiltrate the U.S. Congress.
Glad to hear people saying that out loud. So ridiculous that people call Bernie Sanders radical for supporting policies most Americans do. Manchin and Sinema, along with the entire GOP, are the radicals.
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Manchina would, were it not Mo’r-fo call’d,
Retain that dread corruption whence it owes

And for We People which are no part of thee
Take ‘way thyself.
Come to think of it, Moderate works better than Mo’r-fo. Wish I could edit, WordPress.
And I forgot to change retain to refrain.
Work is never done.
Bravo, LeftCoast!
I am not a political analyst nor interested in definitions of “moderate” and other words. However, I have lived in central Arizona for over a decade and while I wish Kyrsten Sinema would more strongly support the Democratic proposals, I will give her the benefit of the doubt.
Arizona is NOT a Democratic state, despite going for Biden and electing two Democratic US Senators. Those state-wide election results happened thanks to Phoenix, and to a lesser extent Tucson and Flagstaff. Elsewhere in the state, Republicans have a large majority in and out of office. Elsewhere, we are the state of election, Covid, and every other type of conspiracy theory. We crank out a steady stream of “citizens” like Gosar (who moved from Flagstaff to Prescott to ensure his reelection) and Biggs and state senate president Fann and her Cyber Ninja friends. (And check out our leading GOP candidate for governor.) During the last election our super-patriots sold guns and ammo along the highways, along with American flags altered in various ways in violation of the US Flag Code. I saw a sheriff’s deputy perusing the goods at one table.
As another reader mentioned, Republican voters are a lot more motivated to turn out and vote than Democrats–85% to 66% in the Virginia race for governor four days ago. Are you sure Sinema is a traitor to the cause and not a strong and wily politician in a difficult state? What if a Trump Republican (that’s almost redundant!) beats her in the next election? Are you aware that even Liz Cheney voted with Trump 93% of the time while he was ruling as “president” ? [Correct me if I am wrong about 93%, but I think that’s the figure I heard.]
Did Sinema vote with Trump 50% of the time?
Linda,
The problem is that with the Senate a 50/50 tie, Sinema could have voted for Trump 99% of the time and the fact that she calls herself a Democrat is a huge benefit for Democrats.
Sinema is the reason that Bernie Sanders is chairman of the Senate Budget Committee instead of Lindsay Graham.
Sinema is the reason that Sheldon Whitehouse has power on the Judiciary Committee instead of Ted Cruz.
What shocks me is that some people here don’t realize that the best way to punish Sinema and Manchin is to work to elect a lot more Senate Democrats. Then they will have the same power that Susan Collins has in the Republican party. None.
Instead, some posters seem to believe that making this a reason to hate the Democrat party so a lot more Republicans win is a great idea.
Below are voter statistics from AZ Secretary of State Katie Hobbs’ website. (Democrat Hobbs was recently muzzled by the state legislature, then unmuzzled by the state supreme court.)
Republicans 34.6%
Democrats 31.6%
Other 33.0%
Libertarian .9%
Mark-
When “other” is defined as independent, there’s some research that tells us, an overwhelming number of independents vote in a uniformly partisan manner through a long span of years i.e. they say they are independents while voting exclusively Democratic or Republican.
NYC Parent,
There can’t be legitimate objection to your point assuming the goal is enough votes for Democratic wins given the current situation.
Some commenting at the blog observe the success of McConnell and Trump’s punishments for defectors and ponder a process for senators like Manchin when bribes have failed.
All agree, a larger majority is the easiest solution.
Linda,
“all agree a larger majority is the easiest solution”
I wish that were so. In fact, the right wing has been very successful in convincing some voters that the “easiest solution” is to punish the democrats by not voting for them (and of course, failing to mention that this “solution” empowers the right wing to pass laws to make it even harder for progressives to vote and laws that enrich the billionaires and give them even more power).
“Elsewhere in the State its Republican” can be said about most Blue States. Go North of NYC and NY is a Red State. The question is how do you motivate Democratic voters to show up . Part of the answer is in policy, although few voters understand what it means to them. Or they think they are above needing support until they do. No better example than the country taking a sharp turn to the right after Medicare and Medicaid improved the standard of living for 10s and 10s of millions.
But the other part we must defer to the great Steve Bannon . ” You don’t fight with pillows when your opponent is taking head shots.” If you prefer Eric Holder. “When they go low we kick them ” I think I don’t need mention where .
James Carville can go jump in a lake. A few tweets from college students is not a woke army when compared to the Oligarch financed Fascist Right Wing media machine. That has people gladly taking horse de-wormer instead of a Vaccine.
Carville and his candidate Clinton should be exposed for the cunning GOP-lite that they were and are.
The farther Carville and John Podesto are from the Democrats who make decisions, they better off the party is.
Yes, I was also outraged at James Carville for blaming the “woke,” the liberals and the left wing of the party for political infighting. Talk about blame shifting! The real culprits are the right wing “democrats” like Manchin and Sinema (spell check keeps changing the names to Minchin and Cinema). And of course the biggest road block to any progress is the party of Trump. Carville is full of it.
Note to Linda: It’s John Podesta (spell check wants to change it to pedestal) not Podesto.
Manchin and Sinema are similar to Gordon St. Angelo. He was Democratic Party Chair in Indiana for a longer period than any other Chair in history (1964-74). He was Deputy National Democratic Chair briefly in 1968 and narrowly lost a bid for National Dem. Chair in 1973. The entire duration of his politically-active time, he was a libertarian and free market advocate. He was instrumental in the expansion of non-profits into public policy. He was good friends with Milt Friedman, led the Friedman Foundation and, he was an ardent promoter of school choice including a top role with EdChoice.
Later in life, after his time as a DINO, he endorsed hard, right wing Mitch Daniels for Indiana’s governorship.
At least Manchin doesn’t pretend to be someone he isn’t, like Sinema does.
Doesn’t matter what she claims, Sinema is effectively a foot dragger on what is the most important issue we face: climate change. Sinema’s actual intentions (as opposed to her campaign promises) are obvious to anyone who is not a complete nitwit.
The reality is that Sinema has recently been working tirelessly to CUT critical climate change mitigation money from Biden’s bill (if not torpedo the bill altogether)
From NY Times
WASHINGTON — Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who began her political career with the Green Party and who has voiced alarm over the warming planet, wants to cut at least $100 billion from climate programs in major legislation pending on Capitol Hill, according to two people familiar with the matter.”
Pathetically Sinema and her Arizona supporters and apologists don’t even realize that Arizona itself is going to experience some pretty dire effects (shriveling up like a raisin in the sun,) if nothing is done.
I guess that’s really not true that Manchin doesn’t pretend to be something he isn’t, since he pretends to be a Democrat which he absolutely is not.
Compared to their stance on climate change, everything else really pales.
These clowns can oppose all they want on other issues and the long term ramifications will be small beans in comparison.
Given what climate scientists have been telling us for some time now
the opposition of Sinema and Manchin and others on climate change mitigation is simply inexcusable.
Manchin, at his website about his religious faith, wrote that what is important is sacrificing for your neighbor. He is not the person he pretends to be.
Sinema appears to be cut from the same narcissistic cloth as Trump and Charles Koch.

Manchin and Sinema are not moderates but “motherates”
Supposed to be motherats
Maserati Manchin still has strong polling numbers in his home state. There are plenty of West Virginians who will vote against their own interests, it seems. But he has handed a future opponent some very powerful tools to keep him from being reelected.
Yes. Manchin and Sinema are clearly “conservatives,” rather than “moderates.” Biden is a moderate. So was Obama. They, as Democrats, are on the “right” or conservative side of the party. Their views are closer to Nixon or Eisenhower, McCain or Romney. No wonder the public gets confused–American journalism is at a low ebb.
Where are Pelosi and Schumer? That’s the question.
There is no need to make up a new term to describe Sens. Manchin and Sineme as well as others of their ilk. They are all simply crony capitalists in the US economic system of crony capitalism which has prevailed in our country since well before its founding. It’s only been in the last 20-30 years however that it has further devolved towards oligarchy.
The Senate is particularly bad in regard to crony capitalism.
A significant fraction of the Senators (including Manchin) are invested in fossil fuels and are doing everything they can to torpedo efforts to mitigate climate change.
https://readsludge.com/2021/11/05/senators-cling-to-fossil-fuel-investments-as-world-heats-up/
The US Senate has always been undemocratic, reactionary and obstructionist but on the climate issue, it is a threat to the entire world.
By far, the most impactful thing that could be done on this and other issues would be to amend the Constitution to simply abolish the Senate.
But of course, the earth will be consumed by climate change caused fire tornadoes before that will ever happen.
The Opposite of Progressive is Regressive — jes sayin’

Appalling.
Monopsony negotiation is not free market negotiation.
Save America. Kill the bill.
Members of the Democratic Party have become communist lunatics. Sad to see.
By the way, the flip to the Republicans of the governorship in VA indicates that the mothers of VA schoolchildren regard Democrats to be the ones who are “F*ing” them.
Actually it is overlarge government and dysfunctional public unions, which should have been abolished, or never allowed to exist to begin with, decades ago, that has been destroying the proper functioning of the free markets that create high quality goods and services such as decent education. The ills of big government are called the agency problem of economics. In it, distant controllers self-deal, and fail to allocate resources correctly, due to the intrusion of conflicts of interest and the push of misinformation and fad thinking by political actors seeking to ride bandwagons and fad surf, when problems are not dealt with by individuals who understand facts and details down on the ground, but by distant overlords operating collectively on rumor, unhinged theory, and ideology. En masse doesn’t work for most things, which is why these bills stuffed with pork are really just a spin on the famous David Boies document dump technique of win by burying the opposition in words and paper.
Free market negotiation like for medicine prices? Drug research, paid for by the public, advanced the products that the pharmaceutical companies offer at price-gouging prices.

West Virginians, a segment of them, support Manchin because he is their bully against what they see as a power structure. The voters in the segment don’t care if what Manchin stands for harms them or, the next generation. What the segment likes is that Manchin makes other people kowtow to him and that makes his supporters feel that they have power.
Of course they’re not moderates. Just like the Democrats aren’t socialists. Yet, the media insists on these lies, and the Democrats say nothing.
You all know we’re doomed, right? The evil is on one side, and next to them are the ineffectual Democrats.
