Max Brantley writes in the Arkansas Times that the voucher lobby is determined to reverse their 44-52 loss in the Arkansas House. Backed by Walton money, they are naming and shaming the legislators who stood up for their community’s public schools.
Although Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, and his children attended public schools, they are determined to destroy public schools that provide the same opportunity for other people’s children. They blithely toss out millions to buy the support of people who have no heart or soul and will gladly lobby to harm the institution that has been an abiding symbol of our democracy for generations. Public schools have failings, like every other institution. They must be far better, and they should have the respect and the funding to provide equal opportunity to all children.
But the Waltons have led the forces of greed that seek to undermine public schools that accept all students and have standards for professionals. Let me tell you what I think of the Waltons: I think they are greedy. I think they don’t care about other people’s children. They hate unions and public schools. They love privately managed charter schools, vouchers, and any other substitute for the public schools they attended. They treat everyone else as peasants. They are arrogant. They are prideful.
The Waltons represent the worst of American society: people who have become fabulously wealthy by killing small towns, driving small stores out of business, underpaying their one million employees, using their vast wealth to impoverish others and to undermine the community institutions that enrich the lives of people they treat with contempt. For them and their ilk, playing with the lives of other people’s children is a hobby, a pastime. They are very, very rich, and they must have their way. They don’t understand why the peasants refuse to bow down to their wishes.
thanks for the update here

Diane,
You are so right. Thank you.
Prof. Patrick Wolf of the University of Arkansas is the subject of the article, “A Catholic You Want to Know… University of Arkansas professor advocates for Catholic schools…”
(9-26-2017, Arkansas Catholic)
SCOTUS decided in the Biel v. St. James Catholic school case that employers of teachers in religious schools are exempt from civil rights employment law.
It’s a decision that may be very attractive to anti-union social Darwinists. The Napa Institute posted an article recently, “The Remarkable similarities between Catholicism and Charles Koch’s recent book”.
In some states, the AFP and state Catholic Conferences co-host school choice rallies in the capitols.
Patrick Wolf was the “independent evaluator” of voucher programs in Milwaukee and D.C.
Google the posts on this blog about him.
Charter schools coming to Montana?

That is insane. Charter schools in Montana?
Meet Sam. Her full name is Samantha. She’s a single Mom to KeeKee, which is short for Kekeyla. Say hi, KeeKee!
Sam and KeeKee live in the United States. So, they are able to take advantage of the Free Market, which means that they have Choices [cue the Inspirational Music, which quickly fades]. For example, they can Choose to fly to Paris for the weekend or to hang around the apartment–theoretically, that is, because Sam earns only $28K a year as a front office secretary at Bob’s Real Good Flor-uh-duh Private School in Podunkahatchee, Florida, and can afford tickets to Paris about as easily as she can fly their by flapping her arms.
When KeeKee was younger, there used to be this thing called “Public School” that she attended, but some very nice oligarchs wanted to make sure that Sam and KeeKee had Choice [cue the Inspirational Music again], so they paid a lot of money to an organization called ALEC, which drafted boilerplate voucher legislation, which referred to vouchers as “Scholarships,” and this legislation, once passed in states around the country, over the objections of ordinary people, after about a billion tries, drove public schools out of existence, so that now, KeeKee’s “backpack full of cash” follows her to whatever school Sam Chooses [cue the inspirational music] to send her to! For example, Sam can Choose [cue the inspirational music] whether she wants to send KeeKee to Rich White Person’s K-12 Academy, which has tuition of 50K a year and a polo field and sculling and classes in Japanese and Latin and very competent teachers and a Senior Trip to Paris, or to Bob’s Real Good Flor-uh-duh Private School, which, according to its website, uses “Christian curriculums wrote by Bob’s girlfriend Darlene,” and costs 4K a year, which just happens to be the amount of the state scholarship and about half what the state used to spend per year for KeeKee on public school. Or, at least, Sam could THEORETICALLY Choose [cue that music] between these schools, if she had the money of, say, the Waltons or of Bill Gates. Of course, Sam is so happy to live in a Free Country with a Free Market and Choice. Tonight she is going to Choose [cue music] whether to pay the cable/internet bill on time or to buy groceries for her and KeeKee for the week.
cx, end of para. 2: can fly THERE. ofc
