Is there a way for NPE to create a daily newsletter so we can sign up & receive the post of the day via email? It would be best if it appeared in our in boxes. Thanks for considering!
I was not sure of how to respond…I wondered if you or Peter had any thoughts about the december 22 new republic article
Billion-Dollar Book Companies Are Ripping Off Public Schools……..does it fit in the same area of some of what Bill Gates has been doing?
Billion-Dollar Book Companies Are Ripping Off Public Schools……..does it fit in the same area of some of what Bill Gates has been doing?(I asked Jeff)
Yes. And no. There are different ways to privatize public education. The way that Gates tries to do it is to bend schools to conform to his vision of how schools should work by investing millions into his policy efforts. Private companies in the publishing world, on the other hand, want to lock schools into longterm rentier arrangements that ensure their companies’ revenue streams. That’s different forms of the same thing — creating private ownership of a public endeavor.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think Bill Gates wants to make a profit from his investments in “reforming” the schools. He wants control. He wants to be seen as the most important person in the world, the smartest, the most wise, and philanthropic. It is sad that everything he has funded in education has backfired and failed. Among educators, he is remembered for investing nearly a billion in VAM, which did not improve education did not identify successful or unsuccessful teachers, did not help students, and which ended up causing demoralization of teachers because they were judged in a way they knew to be fraudulent. He is also singlehandedly responsible for Common Core, which blew up and has not met any of its grandiose promises. He has experienced massive failure in education. He has hurt teachers and students. He should hang his head in shame.
Diane…if you notice what our friend Jeff said when I asked for a comparison of the billion dollar rip off companies and Gates….he said Gates invests millions….not much to for him to lose or make a profit on….but enough to make him really important. The ripoff companies have a different way of locking in on what jeff characterized as attempts to create private ownership of a public endeavor……I hope he writes more about it.
Steven Singer’s post is excellent. He writes that the tests about to be given are not standardized. If they are not standardized tests, we teachers should be doing our own non-standardized work and saving all the lost time and money.

I will find out.
I agree with Danielle. I’ve come to rely on your daily updates.

Greene wrote that you called him estimable and tireless. I’d like to add fun to read.
He writes with a distinctive style.
Nice idea to put these links on here.
