Zelene Blancas, who taught in the public schools of El Paso, died of COVID-19. She was 35.
She taught first grade, and she emphasized kindness. Her 2018 video of her children saying goodbye with a hug at the end of each day was viewed more than 22 million times.
Blancas tested positive for coronavirus October 20 and days later, she was hospitalized, her brother, Mario Blancas, told CNN. After weeks of showing signs of recovery and taking steps on her own, her oxygen levels dropped, and she was intubated November 22.
The otherwise healthy 35-year-old never came off the ventilator, her brother said. She spent two months in the hospital before dying of complications from Covid-19, her family said.

My daughter who is now living in El Paso sent me an article about this beloved elementary school teacher, who despite taking precautions, contracted Covid. She is one more unfortunate victim of the pandemic. She was known for encouraging kindness and understanding in her classes. She joins the roughly 1,500 people that passed away in El Paso.https://abcnews.go.com/US/el-paso-teacher-gained-popularity-online-dies-month/story?id=74978111

So glad you posted this. It’s a stark reminder for those who still want to minimize the uncertainty that comes with the coronavirus. Wanted to do so yesterday on a comment, but decided against it lest I be called argumentative. The question I wanted to pose then, that I’ll do now, is: for those of you who lament school children are “falling behind” (which I would argue against, human beings are resilient), what’s the equation that factors in the life of a teacher, staffer, administrator, or child? Is it x deaths<y number of children “falling behind?” If yes, please let us know the acceptable values for x and y. As a corollary, since the parents of children who aren’t food or shelter insecure seem to be the most concerned about their kids “falling behind,” what are the x and y values acceptable to you?

Thank you for this post. Will we look back in a few years and wonder why schools and other institutions were open without required weekly testing and before vaccines were available? Dr. Fauci has been confusing with his stance on this topic, unfortunately: https://aschoolnewsletter.substack.com/p/112021

I just sent this blog posting to my blockhead Republican State Senator Niemeyer [R-IN] and ignorant State Representative Slager [R-IN] with the following comment:
Dear Senator Niemeyer and Representative Slager,
Is this what you want to have happen to teachers in Indiana? If not, what are you doing to help? Have you pushed for more money so districts can provide better online services to students at home? Have you worked so in-person schooling allows for smaller class sizes and enough sanitizing materials to prevent the spread of COVID? Are there enough school buses in each district to allow for social distancing? Do you pay enough in salaries for teachers to stay in education?
Tell me exactly what YOU are doing to prevent any adult or child in our schools from getting sick. What should a district do when substitutes refuse to come to take over the place of a teacher who gets sick?
Where are the guidelines?
Sincerely,
Carol Ring [Retired Teacher]

I was reading today about the refugees in Bosnia who were left to freeze to death when the refugee camp burned down. Needless to say the conditions in the camp were deplorable, but we can ignore this suffering because it doesn’t speak to us on a personal level. What the heck this comment means, I have no idea. Just ruminating on the human condition.

Too much ruminating on the human condition can lead to madness. Nietzsche-fication, I believe is the medical term. Be sure to balance with a few doses of frivolity and humor. Here’s one that always gets me out of funk:

speduktr: I saw this heartbreaking story on Democracy Now!
Heartbreaking, sickening &, yes, maddening. There is, in fact, no idea to have…about any senseless death. All the unnecessary deaths from covid.
Home is burning & Nero is fiddling.

If you want to understand the seditious QAnon craziness that will be launched on Jan 6, follow Trump attorney Lin Wood’s Twitter feed. @Llinwood.
He says Pence should be arrested and executed. Chief Justice Robert’s and Justice Breyer should be kicked off Supreme Court. Jeffrey Epstein is alive. Trump is cult leader.

As a retired music teacher I have to say that this is a song clearly expresses how I’d feel about teaching in these troubled times. She has beautifully expressed her emotions.

Diane: This reminds me to acknowledge our Wellesley connection (Class of ’52). I was part of the small group launching the Los Angeles Education Partnership years ago, …. and pleased to report that LAEP is still alive and active in L.A. Not sure how often you check in to determine which of the MANY LEFs that you helped launch and support are still alive and leading the “work” in their cities, but Los Angeles owes you a debt of gratitude. Keep up the great work….. and visit with LAEP if you are ever in L.A.
